Chapter 12 — Jason Finally Chooses His Daughter

Chapter 12 — Jason Finally Chooses His Daughter
Jason had spent three years choosing the wrong people.
His mother.
His family name.
Their secrets.
Their money.
Their reputation.
Every time Lily needed him, he had told himself that keeping quiet was protection.
Every time Emily asked a question, he had convinced himself that another lie would buy them time.
But on the morning the third-child photograph arrived, something inside him finally broke.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
It simply broke.
The part of him that had always believed he could control the damage was gone.
Jason stood in Emily's kitchen, staring at the photograph.
A newborn baby.
A handwritten number.
C-03.
And beneath it:
Transferred before Catherine could intervene.
Jason swallowed.
“Emily.”
She didn't look up.
“What?”
“I know where that number came from.”
Marcus immediately turned toward him.
“You've seen it?”
Jason nodded.
“Three years ago.”
Emily's eyes hardened.
“And you didn't tell me.”
“I was going to.”
“When?”
Jason had no answer.
Emily took the photograph from his hand.
“Tell me everything.”
Jason looked at Lily playing in the next room.
Then he made a decision.
For the first time, he didn't think about Diane.
He didn't think about Richard.
He didn't think about what the truth would cost him.
He thought about his daughter.
And he spoke.
“C-03 wasn't a child.”
Emily frowned.
“What?”
“It was a case number.”
“For what?”
“An illegal transfer.”
Marcus's face tightened.
“How many?”
Jason looked at him.
“Three.”
Emily's voice became quiet.
“Three children.”
Jason nodded.
“Ava was C-01.”
“Lily?”
“No.”
Emily's stomach dropped.
“Then who?”
Jason hesitated.
“Lily was C-02.”
Silence.
“And C-03?”
Jason looked at the photograph.
“We never found that child.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“So Catherine knew.”
“Yes.”
“And Richard?”
“Yes.”
“Diane?”
“Yes.”
Emily's voice shook.
“Who else?”
Jason didn't answer.
Emily stepped closer.
“Who else, Jason?”
He whispered:
“Me.”
Emily froze.
“You?”
“I was involved.”
Marcus moved toward him.
“What did you do?”
Jason didn't defend himself.
“I moved the files.”
“Why?”
“Because Diane told me they were dangerous.”
“You believed her?”
“Yes.”
“And the children?”
“I thought they were protected.”
Emily stared at him.
“You thought?”
Jason's eyes filled.
“I was twenty-six.”
“You were an adult.”
“I know.”
“You signed documents.”
“Yes.”
“You helped them disappear.”
“Yes.”
Emily's voice broke.
“And Lily?”
Jason looked at his daughter.
“I didn't know she was part of it until later.”
“Then why did you stay?”
Jason answered honestly.
“Because I was afraid that if I exposed my family, they'd kill you.”
Emily looked away.
“That excuse doesn't work anymore.”
“I know.”
“Then give me the truth without excuses.”
Jason nodded.
“The night Lily was born, Diane came to the hospital.”
Emily's eyes widened.
“She told me the baby couldn't leave with you.”
“Why?”
“She said Richard had learned about the DNA.”
“What DNA?”
“Lily's.”
Emily felt cold.
Jason continued.
“She said Richard believed Lily was connected to the evidence Catherine had hidden.”
“Because of Marcus.”
Jason nodded.
“He wanted proof.”
Emily looked toward Marcus.
Marcus lowered his eyes.
Jason continued.
“Diane told me there was only one way to keep Lily alive.”
“What?”
“Make her disappear.”
Emily's face went white.
“You took my newborn daughter.”
Jason shook his head.
“No.”
“Then what did you do?”
“I stopped Diane.”
Emily stared.
“You told me you were the reason Lily survived.”
“I was.”
“Then why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I made another mistake.”
“What?”
“I gave Lily to someone I trusted.”
Emily's voice was barely audible.
“Who?”
Jason looked toward the doorway.
“Daniel.”
Emily closed her eyes.
Of course.
Another secret.
Another missing piece.
“Daniel took Lily?”
“Only for one night.”
“Why?”
“To keep Diane from finding her.”
Emily stared at him.
“And then?”
“Daniel returned her.”
“So Lily was never actually missing.”
“No.”
“Then why did everyone act like she was?”
“Because Diane needed you to believe she could take her.”
Emily's face hardened.
“She was controlling me.”
“Yes.”
“And you helped her.”
Jason looked at the floor.
“Yes.”
Lily suddenly appeared in the doorway.
“Daddy?”
Jason looked up.
His face changed.
The little girl walked toward him holding a stuffed rabbit.
“Are you sad?”
Jason knelt.
“A little.”
“Why?”
“Because I made mistakes.”
Lily thought about it.
“Did you say sorry?”
Jason smiled through tears.
“Not enough.”
She handed him the rabbit.
“You can use mine.”
Jason took it.
“Thank you.”
Emily watched them.
For the first time, she saw something different in her husband.
Not fear.
Not obedience.
Not calculation.
Regret.
Real regret.
Jason hugged Lily.
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
He closed his eyes.
“I should have protected you sooner.”
Lily didn't understand.
But she hugged him tighter.
Emily looked away.
She wasn't ready to forgive him.
But she was beginning to believe he could become someone worth forgiving.
That afternoon, Diane called from prison.
Emily almost refused.
Then she answered.
Diane's voice was weak.
“You found C-03.”
Emily stiffened.
“How do you know?”
“Because you're asking the right questions.”
“Where is the child?”
“I don't know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Richard took the file.”
Emily looked at Jason.
He had gone pale.
Diane continued.
“Jason knows where to look.”
Emily's eyes narrowed.
“Why would you tell me that?”
Diane laughed bitterly.
“Because my son finally chose you.”
Emily didn't respond.
Diane's voice became quieter.
“He chose Lily.”
Emily looked toward her daughter.
“Yes.”
“That means he will finally betray us.”
“He already has.”
“No.”
Diane sighed.
“He hasn't.”
Emily frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
“Your husband still has one secret.”
Emily's blood ran cold.
“What secret?”
Diane smiled.
“The night Lily was born.”
Then the line went dead.
Emily turned toward Jason.
He knew.
“Tell me.”
Jason closed his eyes.
“I can't.”
“Wrong answer.”
He looked at her.
“I promised someone.”
“Who?”
“Your father.”
Emily froze.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“My father has been dead for eleven years.”
Jason nodded.
“He wasn't supposed to die.”
Emily stared.
“What does that mean?”
“Your father's death was staged.”
Emily felt the same cold terror she'd felt when Daniel revealed he was alive.
“No.”
Jason continued.
“Your father was the original investigator.”
“Investigating Richard?”
“Yes.”
“And Catherine?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did he disappear?”
“Because Richard discovered him.”
Emily's breathing became shallow.
“Who killed him?”
Jason shook his head.
“Nobody.”
Emily stared.
“He's alive?”
“No.”
“Then what happened?”
Jason looked at her.
“He died protecting Lily.”
Emily couldn't speak.
Jason took out his phone.
“I have something.”
A recording.
An old one.
He pressed play.
A man's voice filled the kitchen.
Emily recognized it immediately.
Her father's voice.
“If you're hearing this, then Emily has finally learned the truth.”
Emily covered her mouth.
Her father continued.
“I know what Richard is doing.”
“I know about the children.”
“And I know Catherine is trying to stop him.”
A pause.
“But there is something neither of them knows.”
Emily looked at Jason.
The recording continued.
“Richard isn't the only person selling children.”
Emily's blood ran cold.
“Someone inside our own family is helping him.”
Jason stopped the recording.
Emily stared.
“Who?”
Jason shook his head.
“I don't know.”
“You do.”
“No.”
“You always know.”
“I swear I don't.”
Emily grabbed the phone.
“Play it.”
Jason did.
Her father's voice returned.
“The person helping Richard has access to hospital records, court records, and private family trusts.”
A pause.
“If anything happens to me, watch the person who benefits when children disappear.”
The recording ended.
Emily looked at Marcus.
Then Jason.
Then Daniel.
Everyone was silent.
Until Lily spoke.
“Mommy?”
Emily turned.
“Yes?”
Lily pointed toward the hallway.
“There is someone outside.”
Everyone froze.
Marcus moved first.
He pulled open the front door.
Nobody stood there.
But something had been left on the porch.
A small package.
Marcus picked it up.
Inside was another photograph.
This one showed Emily's father.
Standing beside Richard.
And between them was a woman.
Emily stared.
She recognized her.
The woman who had been holding the third baby.
The woman from Daniel's photograph.
Emily's voice trembled.
“That's not Diane.”
Jason nodded.
“No.”
“Who is she?”
He looked at the photograph.
Then whispered:
“Your father's secretary.”
Emily frowned.
“She died.”
Jason shook his head.
“No.”
He turned the photograph over.
There was a handwritten address.
And a sentence:
Ask her why your father really died.
That night, Jason made his choice.
He walked into the police station alone.
He carried three boxes of documents.
Bank records.
Medical files.
Forged contracts.
And every message Diane had ever sent him.
The detective stared at the boxes.
“What's this?”
Jason looked exhausted.
“The truth.”
“You understand what you're admitting?”
“Yes.”
“You could be charged.”
“I know.”
“You could lose everything.”
Jason looked through the glass toward the city.
“I already lost everything that mattered.”
The detective studied him.
“Why come forward now?”
Jason thought of Lily.
“Because my daughter deserves a father who doesn't hide behind fear.”
The next morning, the news broke.
BENNETT FAMILY FILES REVEALED.
Then another headline:
FORMER HEIR COOPERATES WITH INVESTIGATION.
Then:
JASON BENNETT CONFESSES TO ROLE IN HIDDEN CHILD RECORDS.
Emily watched the reports silently.
Marcus sat beside her.
“Are you angry?”
“Yes.”
“Do you hate him?”
Emily looked toward Lily.
“No.”
Marcus raised an eyebrow.
“I hate what he did.”
She paused.
“But I don't think I hate him.”
Jason entered the room.
He looked different.
Lighter.
As though telling the truth had removed something heavy from his shoulders.
He approached Emily.
“I don't expect forgiveness.”
Emily nodded.
“Good.”
“I just want you to know that if they come after Lily again, I won't run.”
Emily looked at him.
“You'll stand with us?”
“Always.”
She studied him.
Then nodded.
“That is all I needed you to say.”
Jason smiled.
Lily ran into the room.
“Daddy!”
He knelt.
She wrapped her arms around him.
Emily watched.
For the first time, Jason wasn't choosing Diane.
He wasn't choosing the Bennett name.
He wasn't choosing money.
He wasn't choosing silence.
He was choosing his daughter.
And that choice was going to cost him everything.
His inheritance.
His reputation.
His family's protection.
Perhaps even his freedom.
But when Lily looked up at him and smiled, Jason knew he had finally made the one decision he should have made three years earlier.
Then Emily's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
“Hello?”
A woman's voice whispered:
“Emily Carter?”
“Yes.”
“Your father didn't die because of Richard.”
Emily's heart stopped.
“Who is this?”
The woman breathed shakily.
“He died because he discovered who Lily's real mother was.”
Emily froze.
“What?”
The woman continued:
“And if you want to know why your father sacrificed himself…”
A pause.
“…come alone.”
The call ended.
Emily stared at the phone.
Jason immediately stood.
“What happened?”
Emily looked at him.
Then toward Lily.
And for the first time, the truth she had been chasing seemed to point somewhere even more impossible.
Because everyone had spent years asking who Lily's father was.
May you like
Nobody had asked the more dangerous question.
Who was Lily's mother?
