Chapter 9 — The Truth About Lily’s Father

Chapter 9 — The Truth About Lily’s Father

The black car disappeared before Marcus could reach it.

By the time he crossed the street, there was nothing left but wet pavement and the fading sound of an engine.

Emily remained on the courthouse steps.

The photograph of the third baby was still in her hand.

She couldn't stop staring at the words on the back.

There was a third baby.

Jason came closer.

“What did Marcus find?”

Emily handed him the photograph.

Jason looked at it.

His expression changed instantly.

Emily noticed.

“You've seen this before.”

Jason didn't answer.

“Jason.”

He looked away.

“You've seen this.”

“I've seen the photograph.”

“Where?”

“At my mother's house.”

Emily's stomach tightened.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Jason swallowed.

“Because I didn't know what it meant.”

Emily stared at him.

“You knew there was another baby.”

“I knew there was a photograph.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

“I know.”

“No, Jason.”

Her voice became colder.

“You don't get to say that anymore.”

He looked at her.

“You spent three years deciding which truths I was allowed to know.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“And now?”

Jason looked at Lily.

“Now I know that protecting someone with lies is still lying.”

Emily held his gaze.

“Good.”

She turned toward Marcus.

“We're going home.”

Marcus nodded.

But Jason didn't move.

“Emily.”

She stopped.

“I need to tell you something before you hear it from someone else.”

She looked back.

“What?”

Jason's face had gone pale.

“Lily's father isn't who you think he is.”

The world seemed to go silent.

Emily slowly turned around.

“What did you say?”

Jason looked at Lily.

Then at Emily.

“I am not Lily's biological father.”

For several seconds, Emily couldn't breathe.

She heard traffic.

Rainwater dripping from the courthouse roof.

A car horn in the distance.

But Jason's words were louder than all of it.

“I am Lily's father.”

Jason's voice shook.

“Just not biologically.”

Emily stared at him.

“Three years.”

“Yes.”

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“From the beginning?”

“No.”

“When did you find out?”

Jason lowered his eyes.

“Two weeks before Lily was born.”

Emily felt something inside her crack.

“You knew before she was born.”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of Diane?”

“Of everyone.”

Emily laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“You knew there was a possibility that Lily wasn't your child, and you still let me give birth believing everything was normal.”

“I loved you.”

“That doesn't answer the question.”

“No.”

Jason looked devastated.

“It doesn't.”

Emily stepped closer.

“Who is her father?”

Jason didn't answer.

“Jason.”

He whispered:

“His name is Daniel Carter.”

Emily froze.

“Carter?”

“Yes.”

“That was my father's surname.”

Jason nodded.

Emily shook her head.

“My father died before Lily was born.”

“I know.”

“Daniel Carter was my brother.”

Jason closed his eyes.

Emily stared at him.

“My brother?”

“Yes.”

The words made no sense.

“My brother died when I was twenty.”

“I know.”

“Then how could he be Lily's father?”

Jason looked at Marcus.

Marcus had gone completely still.

Emily turned toward him.

“You knew?”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

Jason spoke quietly.

“Daniel didn't die.”

Emily felt the ground shift beneath her.

“No.”

“I saw him.”

“When?”

“Before our wedding.”

“Where?”

“New York.”

Emily's face went white.

“Why would he disappear?”

Jason hesitated.

“Because Diane made him.”

Emily walked away from everyone.

She needed air.

She reached the edge of the courthouse steps and stared at the street.

Her brother Daniel.

Dead for eleven years.

Except he wasn't.

At least Jason claimed he wasn't.

Her memories began changing.

Daniel had been twenty-four when the family announced his death.

A car accident, they'd said.

No body.

A closed casket.

A funeral.

Her mother had refused to discuss the details.

Emily had spent years believing grief had simply made the family strange.

Now she understood.

The silence hadn't been grief.

It had been fear.

She turned around.

“Show me proof.”

Jason nodded.

“I have it.”

“Where?”

“In the old Bennett records.”

“Why?”

“Because Diane kept everything.”

Emily looked at Marcus.

“Then we're going back.”

The old Bennett warehouse had already been sealed by police.

Marcus still had access.

Inside, the air smelled of dust and wet concrete.

Jason led them through a corridor.

“This is where I found the trust file.”

He stopped beside a metal cabinet.

Then opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Medical records.

Emily saw Daniel's name.

Her hands began shaking.

She pulled out the file.

DANIEL CARTER

Status: Deceased

Then beneath it:

Status amended — protected identity.

Emily looked at Jason.

“What does that mean?”

“He was forced into witness protection.”

“By whom?”

“Catherine.”

Emily's eyes widened.

“Why?”

Jason handed her another document.

It was an old police report.

Daniel had apparently discovered Richard's illegal dealings.

He had tried to expose him.

Richard retaliated.

Catherine intervened.

She arranged for Daniel to disappear.

Emily read the report twice.

“Why didn't he contact me?”

Jason's expression tightened.

“Because Diane threatened to kill you.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“She threatened his sister.”

“Yes.”

“And he believed her.”

“Yes.”

“So he stayed away.”

“Yes.”

Emily's voice broke.

“While I thought he was dead.”

Jason nodded.

“He watched you from a distance.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he contacted me.”

Emily looked up.

“When?”

“Before our wedding.”

“What did he say?”

Jason swallowed.

“He told me not to marry you.”

Emily stared.

“Why?”

“Because he knew what my family was planning.”

“And you married me anyway.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Jason looked at her.

“Because I thought I could protect you from inside.”

Emily shook her head.

“You keep saying that.”

“I know.”

“And every time, someone gets hurt.”

Jason had no answer.

Marcus found another document.

“Emily.”

She turned.

He was holding a medical record.

“Look at this.”

She took it.

It was Lily's original birth record.

Mother:

Emily Carter.

Father:

Daniel Carter.

Emily stared.

“But that's impossible.”

Marcus pointed to the date.

The document had been created three weeks before Lily was born.

Emily looked at him.

“How?”

“It was prepared in advance.”

“Why?”

Jason answered.

“Because Diane expected Lily to be born.”

Emily's blood ran cold.

“She knew.”

“Yes.”

“But how could she know Daniel was the father?”

Jason hesitated.

“Because Daniel had told her.”

Emily felt sick.

“My brother told Diane?”

“No.”

“Then how did she know?”

Jason looked toward the door.

“She had access to your medical records.”

Emily remembered.

Diane always knew too much.

Appointments.

Blood tests.

Ultrasounds.

Even the exact time Emily was expected to deliver.

Emily whispered:

“She was monitoring my pregnancy.”

“Yes.”

“And she knew Daniel was alive.”

“Yes.”

“Then Lily wasn't just part of the trust plan.”

Jason shook his head.

“No.”

Emily looked at him.

“What was she?”

Jason's voice dropped.

“Leverage against Daniel.”

The room went silent.

Emily finally understood.

Diane hadn't simply wanted Lily because of money.

She had wanted Lily because Lily was connected to Daniel.

If Daniel was alive, Lily gave Diane power over him.

And if Daniel had access to evidence against Richard, Lily became the perfect hostage.

Emily looked at Jason.

“Where is my brother now?”

Jason didn't answer.

“Jason.”

“He disappeared six months ago.”

Emily's heart sank.

“What?”

“I was supposed to meet him.”

“When?”

“Three days before your birthday party.”

“And?”

“He never came.”

“Did you look for him?”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell me?”

“No.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Another secret.

Another missing person.

Another lie.

Then she heard something.

A faint vibration.

Marcus looked around.

“What's that?”

Jason searched the cabinet.

The vibration came again.

He pulled out a small phone.

The screen displayed one word:

DANIEL.

Emily grabbed it.

“Hello?”

Nothing.

Then a voice.

Her brother's voice.

“Emily?”

She stopped breathing.

“Daniel?”

A pause.

Then:

“Don't trust Jason.”

The call ended.

Emily stared at the phone.

Jason went pale.

Marcus reached for it.

“Call him back.”

Emily did.

Straight to voicemail.

She turned toward Jason.

“Why would Daniel tell me not to trust you?”

Jason shook his head.

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

“No.”

“Then explain.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

Jason looked at the floor.

“Because Daniel was the one who helped Diane find Lily.”

Emily's eyes widened.

“What?”

Marcus stepped forward.

“Explain.”

Jason swallowed.

“Daniel believed Diane would protect Lily from Richard.”

Emily shook her head.

“My brother trusted Diane?”

“At first.”

“And then?”

“He realized he'd made a mistake.”

Emily stared at him.

“What mistake?”

Jason whispered:

“He gave Diane the location where Lily was being kept.”

Emily's face went cold.

“And then Diane took her.”

“Yes.”

Emily stepped backward.

“My brother helped Diane take my daughter.”

Jason nodded.

“But he regretted it.”

“Regret doesn't erase it.”

“I know.”

Emily's voice broke.

“Everyone keeps making decisions for me.”

Jason looked at her.

“They thought they were protecting you.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“They were protecting themselves.”

That evening, Emily returned home alone.

Lily was with Marcus.

She needed to think.

She entered the living room.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

On the table was a small envelope.

No stamp.

No name.

Emily opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Daniel.

Older.

Alive.

Standing outside a hospital.

Beside him was a woman.

Emily didn't recognize her.

Then she saw the child the woman was holding.

A little girl.

Dark hair.

Crescent-shaped birthmark.

Ava.

Emily's hands trembled.

On the back of the photograph:

Daniel found her first.

Then another sentence:

Diane didn't steal Ava from Richard. Daniel stole Ava from Diane.

Emily's breath caught.

A knock sounded at the door.

She turned.

Nobody was there.

Another knock.

Emily approached cautiously.

“Who is it?”

A man's voice answered.

“Your brother.”

Emily opened the door.

Daniel stood outside.

Alive.

Older.

Thinner.

His face was scarred.

But she knew him instantly.

Her knees nearly gave out.

“Daniel?”

He nodded.

Emily slapped him.

Once.

Hard.

Daniel didn't defend himself.

She slapped him again.

“You were alive.”

“I know.”

“You watched me grieve you.”

“I know.”

“You let me believe I lost my brother.”

“I know.”

“You let Diane near my daughter.”

Daniel's eyes filled.

“I know.”

Emily raised her hand again.

But this time she stopped.

Daniel looked at her.

“You have every right.”

Emily's voice shook.

“Why?”

“Because I thought I could fix it.”

“So did Jason.”

Daniel looked away.

“I made the same mistake.”

Emily lowered her hand.

“Where were you?”

“Running.”

“From Richard?”

“Yes.”

“And Ava?”

“I found her.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

Emily's heart raced.

“You had her?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

“Not here.”

“Then where?”

He whispered:

“Somewhere Diane could never reach.”

Emily stepped closer.

“Why did Jason say you were the one who gave Diane the location?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Because it's true.”

Emily felt betrayed all over again.

“I trusted you.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“Because I believed Diane had changed.”

Emily stared at him.

“She didn't.”

“No.”

Daniel's voice broke.

“She never intended to protect Ava.”

“Then what did she want?”

Daniel looked directly at Emily.

“Your daughter.”

Emily froze.

“Lily?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Lily was the one person who could expose everything.”

Emily's heart pounded.

“What does Lily know?”

“Nothing.”

“Then how could she expose anything?”

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

“Because of who her father is.”

Emily's breathing stopped.

“Me?”

“No.”

“Jason?”

Daniel shook his head.

“You're still asking the wrong question.”

Emily frowned.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Lily's biological father isn't the most important secret.”

“What is?”

Daniel whispered:

“Lily was conceived because Diane needed a witness.”

Emily stared.

“A witness to what?”

Daniel looked terrified.

“To what happened the night Catherine died.”

Emily felt cold.

“My mother died naturally.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“What are you saying?”

“Catherine was murdered.”

Emily couldn't speak.

Daniel continued:

“And Lily's conception was part of the plan to make sure the truth died with her.”

Emily stared at her brother.

“Who killed Mom?”

Daniel's eyes moved toward the window.

“Richard.”

Emily shook her head.

“Richard was already supposed to be dead.”

“He wasn't.”

“Then who helped him?”

Daniel hesitated.

Emily already knew the answer.

“Diane.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Emily closed her eyes.

The woman who had slapped her daughter.

The woman who had manipulated Jason.

The woman who had tried to destroy Emily.

The woman who claimed she was protecting the family.

Diane had been protecting a secret.

But there was something Daniel still wasn't telling her.

Emily opened her eyes.

“You said Lily was conceived because Diane needed a witness.”

Daniel nodded.

“Then tell me the truth.”

He looked at her.

“Lily was born nine months after Catherine discovered Richard's secret.”

Emily frowned.

“What does that have to do with Lily?”

Daniel whispered:

“Everything.”

He reached into his coat.

Pulled out a small cassette.

And handed it to Emily.

“Catherine recorded her final conversation.”

Emily stared at the cassette.

“What does it say?”

Daniel's voice trembled.

“It says who Lily's real father is.”

Emily looked at the cassette.

Then at her brother.

Then toward the stairs, where her daughter was sleeping.

For three years, Emily had believed Lily's father was Jason.

Then she'd learned it was Daniel.

Now Daniel was telling her that even that wasn't the truth.

Someone else was Lily's biological father.

Someone connected to Catherine's death.

Someone whose identity had been hidden for three years.

Emily closed her fingers around the cassette.

“Who?”

Daniel looked at her.

Then whispered:

“Richard Bennett.”

The room went silent.

Emily's face went white.

Daniel continued:

“And that's why Diane was willing to destroy you.”

He looked toward the bedroom.

“Because if the world discovers who Lily's biological father really is, the entire Bennett fortune will collapse.”

Emily stared at him.

“And Jason?”

Daniel's expression became grim.

“Jason knows.”

Emily's heart sank.

“Then why did he lie?”

Daniel answered:

“Because Jason isn't protecting you from Diane anymore.”

He looked directly into Emily's eyes.

“He's protecting you from what Lily's birth would reveal about him.”

Outside, thunder rolled across the city.

Emily tightened her grip on the cassette.

For the first time, she understood that the story she had been fighting was much larger than a violent mother-in-law, a broken marriage, or a stolen trust.

It was about a murder.

A hidden bloodline.

A missing child.

And a family willing to destroy anyone who came close to the truth.

Emily looked toward the stairs.

Her daughter was asleep upstairs.

Safe.

For now.

May you like

But the truth about Lily's father was no longer buried.

And once Emily played Catherine's final recording, there would be no way to put it back.
