Chapter 14 — The Child Diane Tried to Erase

Chapter 14 — The Child Diane Tried to Erase

Nobody moved.

The man standing at the end of the hallway looked exactly like the photograph.

Older.

Colder.

But unmistakably alive.

Jason stared at him as though the dead had walked into the room.

“My father.”

The man smiled.

“Jason.”

Emily pulled Lily closer.

Marcus stepped in front of them.

Daniel reached for the emergency phone.

The older man raised one hand.

“Don't.”

Daniel stopped.

“You're not leaving this house.”

“I don't need to.”

His voice was calm.

“That is what you still don't understand.”

Jason's hands curled into fists.

“You let everyone believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because dead men are difficult to investigate.”

Jason's face hardened.

“You destroyed our family.”

The man laughed quietly.

“No, son.”

He looked around the room.

“Your family destroyed itself.”

Emily finally spoke.

“Who are you?”

He turned toward her.

“Richard Bennett.”

The name seemed to suck all the air from the room.

Lily whimpered.

Emily held her tighter.

Richard looked at the child.

“There she is.”

Jason stepped between them.

“Don't look at her.”

Richard smiled.

“You still think you're protecting her.”

“I am.”

“No.”

Richard shook his head.

“You're only delaying the inevitable.”

Emily remembered Catherine's recording.

The trust is not money.

It is evidence.

And suddenly she understood why Richard had returned.

He wasn't there for revenge.

He wanted the archive.

He wanted Lily.

He wanted everything Catherine had spent years hiding.

Emily whispered:

“You came because of the genetic key.”

Richard nodded.

“Very good.”

“And you knew about Lily before she was born.”

“I knew about the plan.”

“You knew Catherine used my pregnancy to hide her.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Diane wanted to erase her.”

“Yes.”

Emily's voice hardened.

“Why?”

Richard looked at Lily.

“Because a child who carries evidence can become more dangerous than a witness.”

Jason lunged.

Marcus caught him.

“Don't.”

Richard smiled.

“See?”

He looked at Jason.

“You're emotional.”

Jason glared at him.

“You're a monster.”

Richard shrugged.

“I prefer strategist.”

Emily stepped forward.

“You tried to erase a child.”

Richard's expression changed.

“No.”

He pointed toward Lily.

“I tried to erase a problem.”

Emily's eyes filled with rage.

“She is not a problem.”

Richard smiled.

“That is exactly why she is dangerous.”

The police arrived eight minutes later.

Richard didn't resist.

That frightened Emily more than anything.

He simply raised his hands.

“I'm done running.”

The detective cuffed him.

Before leaving, Richard looked at Emily.

“You still don't understand.”

“What?”

“Diane wasn't the architect.”

Emily's blood ran cold.

“Then who was?”

Richard smiled.

“You'll discover that tomorrow.”

Then he was gone.

The next morning, the investigation changed completely.

Richard's arrest triggered the release of thousands of documents.

Bank records.

Hospital files.

Court documents.

Encrypted photographs.

But one folder remained locked.

C-03

Emily stared at it.

“That's the missing child.”

Daniel nodded.

“We need the genetic key.”

Jason looked toward Lily.

“She doesn't know how to use it.”

“She doesn't have to,” Marcus said.

Emily frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Marcus pointed at the computer.

“Lily's DNA opened the archive.”

“Then why is C-03 still locked?”

Daniel examined the file.

“Because this folder isn't asking for Lily's DNA.”

“What does it want?”

He looked up.

“Catherine's.”

Emily went silent.

“She died.”

“Yes.”

“So how do we unlock it?”

Daniel hesitated.

“We don't.”

Emily stared.

“Then who does?”

Daniel looked at the screen.

“The system says the second genetic signature is still active.”

Jason's face changed.

“Active?”

“Yes.”

Emily whispered:

“Catherine's DNA is still being used somewhere.”

They returned to St. Catherine's Hospital.

Rebecca led them into the old maternity laboratory.

Behind a false wall was a refrigerated storage unit.

Inside were dozens of labeled samples.

Catherine Bennett.

Emily Carter.

Anonymous donor.

And one label that made Emily's blood run cold.

C-03 — BIOLOGICAL MOTHER

Emily stared at Rebecca.

“Who is the mother?”

Rebecca shook her head.

“I never knew.”

Emily carefully opened the container.

Inside was a sealed medical record.

The name had been blacked out.

Daniel scanned it.

Then stopped.

“Someone removed the identity.”

“Can you recover it?”

“Maybe.”

He connected the drive.

The system asked for a password.

Emily tried Catherine's birthday.

Denied.

Jason tried his mother's maiden name.

Denied.

Marcus tried the family trust number.

Denied.

Then Lily walked toward the computer.

Her tiny hand touched the screen.

The system unlocked.

Everyone froze.

A single name appeared.

SARAH HALE.

Rebecca gasped.

“My daughter?”

Emily stared.

“Sarah is the biological mother of C-03.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“That can't be.”

But another file opened.

A photograph.

Sarah.

Pregnant.

Standing beside Catherine.

And behind them—

Diane.

Emily felt sick.

“Diane knew.”

Rebecca began crying.

“She took my daughter's child.”

Daniel opened another document.

It was an adoption certificate.

The baby's name had been changed.

Then changed again.

Then erased.

Finally, one word remained:

LILY.

Emily stopped breathing.

Jason looked at her.

“No.”

Emily stared at the document.

“C-03 is Lily.”

Marcus shook his head.

“That doesn't make sense.”

Emily's hands trembled.

“Then why was Lily's identity changed?”

Daniel scrolled down.

The answer appeared.

Original birth identity: Lillian Hale.

Emily looked toward the doorway.

Lily was standing there.

“Mommy?”

Emily immediately knelt.

She hugged her daughter.

But her mind was racing.

Lily had never been Lily Bennett.

She had never been Lily Carter.

Her original name had been Lillian Hale.

She was Sarah's biological daughter.

And Catherine had hidden her.

The truth came out in pieces.

Sarah had become pregnant while investigating Richard's network.

Diane discovered the pregnancy.

She ordered the baby removed.

Catherine intervened.

She secretly arranged for Sarah's daughter to be transferred to another hospital.

Emily had been chosen as the surrogate cover.

The records were altered.

Lillian Hale became Lily Carter.

And Sarah was told her baby had died.

For years, Diane maintained the lie.

She didn't just want to control Lily.

She wanted Sarah to believe her child was gone.

That was why Sarah had disappeared.

That was why Rebecca had been searching.

That was why Catherine had created the trust.

Everything led back to one child.

Lily.

Emily found Sarah that afternoon.

She was in a secure medical facility.

When Emily entered the room, Sarah looked up.

Then she saw Lily.

Sarah stopped breathing.

“No.”

Emily held Lily's hand.

“This is your daughter.”

Sarah began shaking.

“No.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I buried her.”

Emily approached slowly.

“She was never dead.”

Sarah covered her mouth.

Lily stared at her.

“Who are you?”

Sarah couldn't answer.

Emily knelt beside Lily.

“This woman is someone who has been looking for you for a very long time.”

Lily looked at Sarah.

“Do I know you?”

Sarah fell to her knees.

“I don't know.”

She began crying.

“I don't know what to say.”

Lily looked at Emily.

“Mommy?”

Emily hugged her.

“It's okay.”

Sarah whispered:

“Her name.”

Emily looked at her.

“Lillian.”

Sarah cried harder.

“Lillian.”

Lily smiled shyly.

“My name is Lily.”

Sarah nodded.

“Yes.”

“You can call me Lily.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Thank you.”

But the reunion didn't end the danger.

That night, Emily received a message.

YOU FOUND THE CHILD DIANE TRIED TO ERASE.

Then another.

NOW FIND OUT WHY SHE WAS WORTH ERASING.

Emily showed Jason.

His face hardened.

“Richard.”

“No.”

Emily shook her head.

“This isn't him.”

“How do you know?”

“Richard is in custody.”

Marcus took the phone.

“Then who?”

A final message appeared.

LOOK INSIDE CATHERINE'S FINAL TRUST DOCUMENT.

Daniel accessed it.

A hidden clause appeared.

The trust wasn't merely protecting Lily.

It was protecting someone else.

The biological mother of C-03 shall receive full control of the archive.

Emily looked at Sarah.

“That's why Diane wanted her gone.”

Sarah stared.

“She wanted the archive.”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“She wanted Sarah's authority.”

Emily understood.

Without Sarah, the archive could never be legally transferred.

Lily wasn't just the key.

Sarah was the guardian.

The entire network had been trying to erase both mother and daughter.

Three days later, Diane requested a meeting.

Emily almost refused.

Then she agreed.

Diane sat behind glass.

She looked exhausted.

“What do you want?”

Diane stared at Lily's photograph.

“She found her.”

Emily said nothing.

Diane smiled sadly.

“I spent years trying to erase that child.”

“Why?”

“Because she was proof.”

“Proof of what?”

Diane leaned closer.

“Sarah's daughter was the only child Catherine could legally connect to the trust.”

Emily frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means if Lily survived, the archive would eventually belong to Sarah.”

“And then?”

“Everything would come out.”

Emily stared.

“You destroyed a child's identity to protect criminals.”

Diane looked down.

“Yes.”

“Did you ever feel guilty?”

Diane's eyes filled with tears.

“For the first time in twenty years.”

Emily's expression didn't change.

“Too late.”

“I know.”

Diane took a breath.

“There is one more thing.”

“What?”

“Richard wasn't the person who ordered Lily's disappearance.”

Emily froze.

“Who was?”

Diane looked toward the security camera.

Then whispered:

“Catherine.”

Emily's blood turned cold.

“No.”

Diane nodded.

“Your beloved Catherine started it.”

Emily returned to the safe house.

Everyone was waiting.

She told them what Diane had said.

Jason refused to believe it.

“She's lying.”

Marcus shook his head.

“She could be.”

Daniel opened the archive.

“Maybe not.”

He pointed to a document.

Catherine's signature.

An order.

TRANSFER C-03.

Emily stared.

The date was seventeen years before Lily's birth.

Jason frowned.

“That can't be Lily.”

Daniel scrolled further.

Another document.

PROJECT C-03 — PRENATAL DEVELOPMENT.

Emily's heart stopped.

“She planned it before I ever met Jason.”

Marcus whispered:

“Then Lily wasn't an accident.”

“No,” Emily said.

“She was created for a purpose.”

Everyone looked at Lily.

The little girl was sleeping peacefully.

Emily's voice trembled.

“What purpose?”

Daniel opened the final file.

A sentence appeared.

C-03 is not the heir.

C-03 is the witness.

Emily stared at the screen.

Then another line appeared.

The heir is already alive.

Jason looked at Marcus.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Nobody spoke.

A final photograph loaded.

A child.

Older than Lily.

Standing beside Catherine.

And beneath the photograph was a name.

ALEXANDER BENNETT.

Jason's face went white.

“My brother.”

Emily looked at him.

“You told me you were an only child.”

Jason couldn't speak.

Marcus slowly sat down.

Daniel whispered:

“That's impossible.”

But the photograph was real.

Catherine had another child.

A secret heir.

A child who had been hidden for decades.

And if the document was correct—

Alexander Bennett was still alive.

Emily looked at Lily.

Then at the photograph.

The family had spent years fighting over one child.

But Catherine had been protecting another.

And somewhere in the world, the real heir to the Bennett legacy was watching.

The next morning, the first message arrived.

I KNOW YOU FOUND ME.

Then:

NOW COME FIND OUT WHY CATHERINE HID ME.

Emily stared at the screen.

She understood then.

Diane had tried to erase Lily.

Richard had tried to control her.

Catherine had tried to protect her.

But the biggest secret had never been Lily.

May you like

It was the child Catherine had hidden before Lily was even born.

And that child had finally decided to come home.
