Chapter 2: The Clause They Never Read
At exactly 9:00 a.m. the following morning, the boardroom was full.
Twelve directors.
Two corporate attorneys.
The CFO.
The Head of Human Resources.
And Ethan.
He walked in wearing his usual confident smile, convinced the previous day's events were some kind of misunderstanding.
The smile disappeared when he saw me sitting at the head of the table.
"Claire?"
I simply nodded toward the empty chair across from me.
"Please. Have a seat."
He looked around.
"Where's the chairman?"
An older gentleman near the window smiled politely.
"She's already here."
Ethan frowned.
"What?"
He pointed at me.
"You mean... Claire?"
The chairman folded his hands.
"Mrs. Parker founded this company."
"She owns seventy-eight percent of the voting shares."
"She appoints this board."
"And she approved every executive appointment—including yours."
The room fell silent.
Ethan stared at me as if we'd never met.
"No..."
"That's impossible."
I slid a folder across the polished table.
"Open it."
Inside was his employment contract.
Highlighted in yellow was a clause he had never bothered to read.
Section 14.2 — Executive Conduct
Any executive whose actions intentionally damage the company's reputation, create legal liability, or engage in harassment toward another employee or company owner may be terminated immediately with forfeiture of all bonuses, deferred compensation, stock incentives, and executive separation benefits.
His hands began to shake.
"You're firing me..."
I calmly pressed a button on the conference phone.
The television on the wall switched on.
The security video from my kitchen began playing.
Linda screaming.
Designer clothes being ripped apart.
My voice warning her to stop.
Ethan standing silently.
Then the final image—
Him walking away while his mother continued destroying my property.
No one in the room spoke.
Finally, the chairman cleared his throat.
"Motion to terminate Executive Vice President Ethan Collins for violation of Section 14.2."
"Twelve votes."
