Linda burst into the lobby twenty minutes later.
"My son works here!"
She stormed toward the elevators before security stepped in.
"You can't stop me!"
"I'm his mother!"
The receptionist looked up calmly.
"No, ma'am."
"This building belongs to Mrs. Claire Parker."
Linda froze.
"What did you say?"
At that moment I stepped out of the elevator.
She pointed a trembling finger at me.
"You planned this!"
"No," I replied.
"I tolerated you for five years."
"There's a difference."
"You destroyed my son's career!"
I shook my head.
"I gave him one."
Linda looked confused.
I continued.
"When Ethan and I met, he had been unemployed for nearly eleven months."
"I rewrote his résumé."
"I paid for executive coaching."
"I introduced him to every major client."
"I even insisted he receive promotions because I believed he'd grow into them."
I paused.
"He never did."
