Chapter 3: My Father's Last Letter

Chapter 3: My Father's Last Letter
"There is one more thing," Robert said.
He reached into his briefcase again.
"This letter was to be delivered only if there was ever a dispute over Daniel's estate."
He handed the sealed envelope to me.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was my father's familiar handwriting.
My dearest Hannah,
If you're reading this, then I'm no longer there to protect you.
I know your mother loves you in her own way, but grief changes people. So does money.
I gave you this house because you never asked me for anything.
You worked hard, built your own life, and expected nothing in return.
Chloe is my daughter too, and I love her. But love should never be confused with entitlement.
Whatever happens next, don't let anger decide your future.
Make me proud.
Love always,
Dad.
By the time I finished reading, tears blurred every word.
Jason lowered his head.
Several neighbors quietly wiped their eyes.
Even my mother looked away.
For the first time that evening, she seemed less angry than ashamed.
Chloe wasn't.
She slammed both hands on the table.
"This is ridiculous!"
"Dad promised me everything!"
May you like
Robert answered calmly.
"Your father made no such promise in any legal document."
