CHAPTER 2 — THE HUSBAND WHO SOLD HIS VOWS

CHAPTER 2 — THE HUSBAND WHO SOLD HIS VOWS
Elizabeth read the note twelve times.
She counted because counting was easier than accepting.
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
By the twelfth time, the words still had not changed.
"Elizabeth, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you."
Her father's handwriting.
The handwriting she recognized from birthday cards, school notes, and the letters he left before his death.
The handwriting of the man who always told her:
"People reveal who they are when they think nobody is watching."
She had spent years believing her father's biggest regret was leaving her too soon.
Now she wondered…
had he known something was coming?
"Elizabeth."
Amy's voice pulled her back.
She looked up.
Amy was standing beside the desk, holding another cup of coffee.
"You haven't moved for ten minutes."
Elizabeth looked at the note.
"My father knew."
Amy frowned.
"Knew what?"
"That Dwight's family was dangerous."
Christopher took the paper carefully.
He examined the handwriting.
"The date?"
Elizabeth looked at the bottom.
Three months before she met Dwight.
Christopher's expression changed.
"Your father wrote this before your relationship began."
Elizabeth nodded.
"Yes."
"Then this wasn't about Dwight specifically."
Christopher placed the paper down.
"It was about the Whitmore family."
The room became quiet.
Elizabeth thought about the first time she met Dwight.
A charity event.
A crowded room.
A man standing alone near the window.
He told her he hated pretending.
He told her rich people were fake.
He told her he wanted a simple life.
She believed him because she wanted to.
Now every memory looked different.
The coffee dates.
The romantic trips.
The promises.
Were they moments?
Or strategies?
Christopher opened his laptop.
"I need everything you know about Dwight's finances."
Elizabeth nodded.
"I can access some of his accounts."
"How?"
"He gave me permission after we married."
Amy looked surprised.
"Why?"
Elizabeth gave a bitter smile.
"Because he wanted me to trust him."
Christopher began searching.
Minutes passed.
Then his expression changed.
"What?"
Elizabeth asked.
Christopher turned the screen.
"Your husband has debt."
She stared.
"How much?"
The number appeared.
Elizabeth felt cold.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Loans.
Credit cards.
Private debts.
Business failures.
"But he told me his family was wealthy."
Christopher looked at her.
"Families can look wealthy while drowning."
Then another file appeared.
A company record.
Whitmore Family Holdings.
Elizabeth leaned closer.
"What is that?"
Christopher opened it.
"A family business."
"Doing what?"
"Real estate."
She remembered the apartment.
The down payment.
The excitement.
Dwight saying:
"We're building our future."
Christopher continued.
"Except there is something strange."
"What?"
"The apartment purchase was never completed."
Elizabeth froze.
"What?"
"You paid money."
"Yes."
"You believed you were buying property."
"Yes."
"But the property was still under the Whitmore family name."
A terrible feeling formed in her stomach.
"So where did my money go?"
Christopher looked at the documents.
"That's what we need to find out."
Across town, Dwight was having his own investigation.
He sat in his father's office.
Jared stood near the window.
"You married her because you promised us results."
Dwight looked away.
"I know."
"Then why is she leaving?"
Dwight remained silent.
Jared turned.
"You underestimated her."
The sentence angered Dwight.
Because it was true.
"I thought she loved me."
Jared laughed.
"Love makes people predictable."
Dwight looked at his father.
Something about those words bothered him.
Because suddenly he realized something.
His father had never cared about his marriage.
Only what the marriage could provide.
"Did you know about the contract?"
Dwight asked.
Jared's expression changed slightly.
"What contract?"
Too slow.
Dwight noticed.
"You knew."
Jared's face hardened.
"Watch your tone."
"No."
Dwight stood.
"For two years, I lied to her because you told me this family needed her."
Jared stepped closer.
"And did you enjoy the lifestyle her money provided?"
Dwight said nothing.
That silence was his answer.
Later that evening, Elizabeth received an unexpected visitor.
She opened Amy's apartment door.
And froze.
Dwight stood there.
Alone.
No family.
No confidence.
No arrogant smile.
"Elizabeth."
She looked at him.
"What are you doing here?"
"I want to talk."
"No."
His face changed.
"You won't even listen?"
She stared.
"You had two years to tell the truth."
"Please."
That word surprised her.
Because Dwight Whitmore had never begged.
"I made mistakes."
Elizabeth almost laughed.
"Mistakes?"
A pause.
"You didn't forget our anniversary."
She looked at him.
"You didn't accidentally kiss Ashley."
Another step.
"You didn't accidentally create a plan to steal my money."
Dwight's face turned pale.
"You saw the video."
Elizabeth stared.
"Yes."
Silence.
"How much did you know?"
The question shocked him.
"What?"
"How much did you know about your family's plan?"
Dwight looked away.
And that was enough.
Elizabeth closed her eyes.
The answer hurt.
"You knew."
Dwight whispered:
"I didn't think it would go this far."
She looked at him.
"What did you think would happen?"
No answer.
"You thought I would become your family's servant."
"No."
"You thought I would pay their bills."
"No."
"You thought I would accept being humiliated."
Dwight's silence became unbearable.
Elizabeth nodded slowly.
"You're right."
A pause.
"I don't think you married me because you hated me."
Dwight looked confused.
"I think you married me because you were weak."
That hurt him.
More than anger.
More than shouting.
"You loved being protected by powerful people."
Elizabeth continued.
"You loved the money."
A pause.
"But you never had the courage to admit you were using me."
Dwight's eyes became red.
"Elizabeth..."
"No."
Her voice remained calm.
"Do you know what hurts the most?"
He looked at her.
"It isn't that you betrayed me."
A pause.
"It's that I defended you."
The words destroyed him.
Elizabeth closed the door.
But before Dwight left, he said something that stopped her.
"Your father was right about us."
She opened the door slightly.
"What did you say?"
Dwight swallowed.
"He knew my family was going to use you."
Elizabeth froze.
"How?"
Dwight looked terrified.
"Because he confronted my father before you met me."
The hallway went silent.
"What happened?"
Dwight looked at her.
"Your father threatened to expose us."
Us.
Not him.
Not Jared.
Us.
Elizabeth stepped forward.
"What does that mean?"
Dwight whispered:
"Your father discovered the Whitmores had done this before."
Her heart sank.
"Before?"
"Other wives."
The world seemed to stop.
"Other women?"
Dwight nodded.
"They married into the family."
A pause.
"They brought money."
Another pause.
"Then they disappeared."
Elizabeth felt cold.
"Disappeared?"
Dwight looked away.
"Divorced. Broken. Destroyed financially."
The pattern.
The plan.
The system.
Her marriage was not an accident.
She was simply the newest target.
That night, Christopher discovered one more thing.
A hidden account.
A payment made one week before Elizabeth's wedding.
The sender:
Ashley Collins.
The receiver:
Dwight Whitmore.
The amount:
$50,000.
Elizabeth stared at the screen.
Ashley had not stolen her husband.
She had been paid to help.
Then Christopher opened the attached message.
One sentence.
"Once she signs the final documents, we are done."
Elizabeth felt something inside her become completely still.
Not broken.
Not defeated.
Still.
The same silence she had before smashing that glass table.
Amy looked at her.
"What are you going to do?"
Elizabeth closed the laptop.
For the first time since leaving the Whitmore apartment…
she smiled.
"I'm going to let them believe they won."
Christopher looked at her carefully.
"And then?"
Elizabeth looked at the divorce papers.
At her father's note.
At the evidence of every lie.
"Then I'm going to show them what happens when someone they underestimated stops being afraid."
Across town, Dwight received a message from Jared.
WE NEED TO TALK. SHE CANNOT KNOW THE REST.
Dwight stared at the screen.
Because for the first time…
he wondered what his family had been hiding from him too.
May you like
And that question frightened him more than losing Elizabeth.
