CHAPTER 6 — THE WOMAN THEY UNDERESTIMATED

CHAPTER 6 — THE WOMAN THEY UNDERESTIMATED

Elizabeth had spent her entire life being underestimated.

Not because she was weak.

Because she was quiet.

People often confused silence with surrender.

Kindness with stupidity.

Patience with fear.

The Whitmore family made that mistake.

They looked at Elizabeth and saw a woman who would forgive.

A woman who would cry.

A woman who would eventually return because she had nowhere else to go.

They never saw the woman who had spent years watching her father build businesses.

They never saw the woman who managed her own investments before marriage.

They never saw the woman who learned from every mistake.

And now

they were about to learn.

The morning after the mysterious phone call, Elizabeth arrived at Christopher’s office earlier than usual.

He was already there.

Waiting.

“You’re angry.”

Christopher looked at her.

“That’s an understatement.”

Elizabeth placed the phone recording on the table.

The call had been saved automatically.

“Who is Clara Whitmore?”

Christopher was silent.

Too silent.

That was the answer.

“You know.”

Christopher sighed.

“Yes.”

Elizabeth stared.

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“I didn’t have enough proof.”

“No.”

Her voice remained calm.

“You didn’t tell me because you were protecting someone.”

Christopher did not deny it.

“Who?”

A long pause.

“Your father.”

Elizabeth froze.

“My father is dead.”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you still protecting him?”

Christopher looked at the old files on his desk.

“Because your father was not only investigating the Whitmores.”

A pause.

“He was investigating himself.”

Elizabeth frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Christopher opened a folder.

Inside were documents she had never seen.

Financial records.

Private agreements.

Old company reports.

“This is your father’s company before his death.”

Elizabeth looked.

Everything seemed normal.

Until she saw one name.

Carter International Holdings.

Her family business.

Christopher pointed.

“Three years before you met Dwight, your father discovered money disappearing from this company.”

Elizabeth’s stomach tightened.

“Someone stole from us?”

Christopher nodded.

“And he suspected the person was close.”

“Who?”

Christopher looked at her.

“Someone who knew everything about your family.”

The room became cold.

Before Elizabeth could ask more, her phone rang.

It was her bank.

She answered.

The voice on the other end was nervous.

“Ms. Carter, we need you to confirm an urgent transaction.”

“What transaction?”

“A transfer request involving your investment account.”

Elizabeth froze.

“What transfer?”

The employee hesitated.

“A request to move all remaining funds into a Whitmore family trust.”

Her hand tightened around the phone.

“Who authorized it?”

A pause.

“Your husband.”

The silence afterward was dangerous.

Dwight had tried to take the money.

Even after everything.

Christopher immediately stood.

“Did they process it?”

“No.”

The employee continued:

“We blocked it because your account has a security restriction.”

Elizabeth breathed.

“What restriction?”

The employee answered:

“A protection clause added by your father.”

Again.

Her father.

After the call ended, Elizabeth sat quietly.

Christopher watched her.

“You understand now?”

She looked at him.

“My father knew.”

“Yes.”

“He prepared for this.”

“Yes.”

Elizabeth looked down.

For years she thought her father left her alone.

Now she realized something painful.

He had never stopped protecting her.

Meanwhile, Dwight was discovering what it meant to lose control.

He sat in Jared’s office.

“You tried to access Elizabeth’s accounts?”

Jared asked.

Dwight looked away.

“I needed money.”

Jared laughed.

“You needed money?”

A pause.

“You mean you needed the money your wife earned?”

Dwight clenched his jaw.

“You told me this would work.”

Jared poured himself a drink.

“It would have.”

“Until Elizabeth hired a lawyer.”

Jared smiled.

“She was always going to fight.”

Dwight looked confused.

“What?”

“You think we chose her because she was weak?”

Jared looked at him.

“We chose her because she was strong.”

The answer shocked Dwight.

“What?”

“Strong people have more resources.”

A pause.

“They also believe they can fix things.”

Jared smiled coldly.

“That makes them easier to control.”

For the first time, Dwight felt disgust.

Not only toward his father.

Toward himself.

Because he had been part of it.

That afternoon, Elizabeth made her first move.

She called a meeting with her financial advisors.

Not the Whitmore family.

Her own team.

People she had not contacted since marriage.

When she entered the conference room, everyone stood.

“Ms. Carter.”

She smiled slightly.

“It’s Elizabeth.”

Her former advisor, Michael, looked surprised.

“We heard about what happened.”

“I’m sure everyone did.”

Silence.

Elizabeth placed documents on the table.

“I need a complete review of every asset connected to my marriage.”

Michael looked at the files.

“This could become complicated.”

“I know.”

“And public.”

“I know.”

“Your reputation may be affected.”

Elizabeth looked at him.

“My reputation was protected by staying quiet.”

A pause.

“That ended the day someone hit me.”

Nobody spoke.

The woman sitting before them was not the same woman they remembered.

She was calmer.

Sharper.

Stronger.

She was no longer trying to save her marriage.

She was saving herself.

Two days later, the first public news appeared.

BUSINESS HEIR DWIGHT WHITMORE FACES DIVORCE ALLEGATIONS AFTER FAMILY DISPUTE

The Whitmore family panicked.

Susan cried to reporters.

“Elizabeth misunderstood our traditions.”

Gemma posted online:

“She always wanted money.”

Ryan released the video of Elizabeth breaking the table.

They expected public sympathy.

Instead

people noticed something.

The video started after the slaps.

Not before.

Christopher released the full security footage from the apartment.

The world saw everything.

Jared blocking the door.

Dwight standing silent.

The first slap.

The second.

Nobody helping.

The public reaction changed instantly.

The Whitmore family had created their own downfall.

That evening, Elizabeth received another package.

This time there was a name.

Clara Whitmore.

Inside:

A letter.

The handwriting was old.

But clear.

"Elizabeth,"

"If you are reading this, then Jared failed to stop you."

She continued.

"You are probably wondering why I never came forward."

"The answer is simple."

"Because Jared does not destroy people with anger."

"He destroys them with patience."

Elizabeth kept reading.

"Your husband was not the beginning of the plan."

"He was the final step."

Her heart stopped.

"But there is something you need to know."

"Dwight was not the only person inside your marriage who lied."

Elizabeth looked up.

Amy noticed her expression.

“What?”

Elizabeth slowly lowered the letter.

“Someone else helped them.”

“Who?”

Elizabeth looked at the final line.

The name written there.

A name she never expected.

Your mother.

The room became silent.

Because Elizabeth had spent her entire life believing her parents loved each other.

And now she had to face the possibility

May you like

that the biggest secret behind her marriage began long before she ever met Dwight.
