CHAPTER 3 — THE LAWYER WHO KNEW THE TRUTH

CHAPTER 3 — THE LAWYER WHO KNEW THE TRUTH

Christopher Hayes had seen thousands of people walk into his office.

Some were angry.

Some were desperate.

Some wanted revenge.

Some wanted justice.

But Elizabeth Whitmore was different.

She walked in carrying the same woman who had entered his office the day before.

A woman with a bruised face.

A damaged tooth.

A broken marriage.

But her eyes had changed.

Before, Elizabeth was looking for a way to survive.

Now…

she was looking for the truth.

Christopher placed the thick case file on the table.

"Before we continue, there is something you need to understand."

Elizabeth looked at him.

"What?"

"The divorce is not the biggest problem."

Amy frowned.

"Not the biggest?"

Christopher nodded.

"No."

He opened the folder.

"The marriage itself may have been built on fraud."

Elizabeth remained silent.

She had suspected it.

But hearing it from a lawyer made it real.

"Explain."

Christopher turned the first page.

"Your wedding agreement."

Elizabeth looked at the document.

"I never signed this."

"Exactly."

The agreement contained several clauses.

Financial responsibilities.

Property transfers.

Family obligations.

Control over future assets.

A normal person might have missed it.

But Christopher had spent twenty years reading contracts designed to trap people.

"This document was created to make you believe you were joining a family."

He pointed at a paragraph.

"But legally, it was designed to make you a financial provider."

Elizabeth stared.

"They planned everything."

Christopher nodded.

"Yes."

Amy clenched her fists.

"I still cannot believe they did this."

Christopher looked at her.

"People underestimate how far some families will go when money is involved."

Elizabeth looked at the contract.

"What happens now?"

Christopher leaned back.

"Now we find out who created this."

The first step was simple.

Follow the money.

They requested financial records.

Bank transfers.

Property documents.

Company reports.

Private agreements.

For three days, Christopher and his team searched.

And every discovery made the situation worse.

The first discovery:

The apartment Elizabeth thought she purchased was never intended to become their home.

The second:

The money she transferred was divided between several accounts.

The third:

A large amount was transferred directly to:

Whitmore Family Holdings.

Elizabeth stared at the document.

"They used my money to save their company."

Christopher nodded.

"But they needed you to believe it was an investment in your future."

The betrayal became clearer.

They had not wanted Elizabeth.

They wanted what Elizabeth represented.

Security.

Money.

A solution.

Then Christopher found something unexpected.

A name.

He stopped scrolling.

Elizabeth noticed.

"What?"

Christopher closed the laptop slightly.

"There's someone else involved."

"Who?"

He hesitated.

Then answered.

"Your father."

The room became quiet.

Elizabeth already knew her father had investigated the Whitmores.

But she didn't know why.

Christopher opened another file.

A report.

Private investigation.

Created three years ago.

The subject:

Whitmore Family Financial Practices.

Elizabeth read the first page.

Then the second.

Her hands began shaking.

Her father had discovered everything.

The hidden debts.

The fake property deals.

The previous marriages.

And one final note:

Potential target: Elizabeth Carter.

Amy looked confused.

"Her maiden name."

Elizabeth whispered:

"He knew."

Christopher nodded.

"Your father knew they would come after you."

"Why didn't he tell me?"

Christopher looked uncomfortable.

Because that answer mattered.

"Your father was trying to build a case."

Elizabeth looked at him.

"A case?"

"He believed confronting them without evidence would only make them hide."

"So he waited?"

Christopher nodded.

"He wanted enough proof to destroy them legally."

Elizabeth looked down.

"And then he died."

Silence.

Her father's death had always been explained as an accident.

A sudden heart attack.

Nothing suspicious.

But now every part of her life seemed connected.

Christopher noticed her expression.

"Elizabeth."

She looked up.

"Don't let this consume you."

She smiled faintly.

"Everyone keeps telling me not to let anger control me."

"And?"

"And nobody asks what happens when people like them are allowed to continue."

Christopher studied her.

For the first time, he understood.

Elizabeth was not trying to destroy a family.

She was trying to stop a system.

That evening, they discovered another file.

A message hidden in her father's investigation.

Christopher read it carefully.

Then his face changed.

"What?"

Elizabeth asked.

Christopher turned the screen.

The message was written by her father.

"If Elizabeth ever marries Dwight Whitmore, do not tell her immediately."

Elizabeth froze.

"Why?"

Christopher continued reading.

"Because the Whitmores will expect her to panic. They will expect her to run. She must know the truth only when she is strong enough to fight."

Elizabeth looked away.

Her father knew her.

He knew she would try to fix everything.

He knew she would forgive too easily.

But there was more.

The next line made Christopher stop.

"The most dangerous person in the Whitmore family is not Jared."

Elizabeth looked at him.

"Who?"

Christopher continued.

"It is the person who pretends to have no power."

A chill moved through the room.

Amy whispered:

"Susan?"

Christopher shook his head.

"No."

He looked at Elizabeth.

"Your mother-in-law may not be the person your father was afraid of."

"Then who?"

Before Christopher could answer, his assistant entered.

"Mr. Hayes."

Christopher looked up.

"What happened?"

The assistant placed a folder on the desk.

"We found the original apartment documents."

Elizabeth stood.

"Where?"

"At the Whitmore family lawyer's office."

Christopher opened the folder.

Inside was the original purchase agreement.

The buyer:

Elizabeth Carter.

The owner:

Elizabeth Carter.

For a moment, Elizabeth felt relief.

Then she saw the last page.

A transfer document.

Signed two days after her wedding.

A document transferring ownership.

But the signature was not hers.

Elizabeth stared.

"That's impossible."

Christopher examined it.

"No."

A pause.

"This is worse."

"What?"

"This is forgery."

The room went silent.

Someone had copied her signature.

Someone had planned this before the wedding.

Someone inside the family had access to her documents.

Then Christopher noticed the witness signature.

His expression changed completely.

Elizabeth saw his face.

"Who signed?"

Christopher slowly turned the page.

The witness was:

Dwight Whitmore.

Her husband.

The man who promised to protect her.

The man who said their vows.

The man who looked into her eyes and said:

"I choose you."

He had already planned how to take from her.

That night, Dwight sat alone in his father's office.

Jared poured himself a drink.

"You should have controlled her better."

Dwight looked at him.

"She knows."

Jared froze.

"What?"

"She knows everything."

For the first time, Jared looked worried.

"Then we accelerate the plan."

Dwight frowned.

"What plan?"

Jared looked at him.

And Dwight realized something terrifying.

His father had never trusted him either.

"You were never the owner of anything, son."

A pause.

"You were only the husband we needed her to marry."

Dwight stared.

Because the truth was finally reaching him.

He had sold his vows.

But someone had sold him first.

And somewhere else…

Elizabeth looked at the evidence spread across the table.

Her marriage.

Her money.

Her trust.

All stolen.

She closed the file.

"Christopher."

"Yes?"

"I want everything."

He looked at her.

"Everything?"

Elizabeth nodded.

"Every document."

"Every account."

"Every person involved."

A pause.

"I don't just want a divorce."

Her eyes hardened.

"I want the truth to be impossible for them to hide."

And for the first time…

Christopher Hayes smiled.

Because he knew one thing.

The Whitmore family had spent years destroying women who trusted them.

May you like

But they had chosen the wrong woman this time.
