Chapter 2 – The Men in Black

Chapter 2 – The Men in Black
The ballroom fell into an uneasy silence.
No one laughed anymore.
No one whispered.
Every pair of eyes remained fixed on Vivienne as she stood in the center of the room, one hand gently protecting the life growing inside her, the other holding her phone.
She had made only one call.
One sentence.
"Dad... it's time."
Now she waited.
Chloe folded her arms with a smug smile.
"You've called your family?" she sneered. "Wonderful. Maybe they'll bring enough money to replace my ring."
Several guests chuckled.
Others looked away, uncomfortable after witnessing Eleanor tear apart a pregnant woman's dress.
Vivienne ignored every word.
She wasn't looking at Chloe.
She wasn't looking at Eleanor.
She was watching the entrance.
Dominic slowly walked toward her.
His face was pale.
"Vivienne..."
She didn't answer.
"I'm sorry this got out of control."
Still nothing.
He lowered his voice.
"You know my mother. Once she calms down—"
She finally looked at him.
Her eyes were strangely peaceful.
"No, Dominic."
He frowned.
"No?"
"I know exactly who your mother is."
The words struck him harder than any scream could have.
For the first time in three years, there was no sadness in Vivienne's eyes.
Only acceptance.
The realization terrified him.
—
Across the ballroom, Eleanor continued putting on a performance.
"I've never been so humiliated in my life!" she declared loudly.
"My daughter lost a million-dollar diamond because we invited the wrong kind of people."
Several wealthy guests nodded politely.
Others exchanged uncertain glances.
A silver-haired gentleman finally spoke.
"Eleanor... perhaps we should wait until the police arrive."
"There is nothing to wait for!"
Eleanor snapped.
"Everyone saw her standing near Chloe."
"Poor people always become desperate."
Vivienne smiled faintly.
Poor.
How many times had she heard that word?
Too many to count.
Three years earlier...
When Dominic proposed...
Her father had offered her one piece of advice.
"If a man truly loves you, he'll protect you whether you're rich or poor."
She had wanted to believe love alone was enough.
Tonight proved otherwise.
—
Near the exit, Amanda's breathing became increasingly uneven.
She clutched her silver evening purse tighter against her body.
Tiny beads of sweat formed along her forehead despite the ballroom's cool air.
The wedding planner noticed.
So did one of the hotel security supervisors standing discreetly beside the wall.
He quietly spoke into the microphone hidden beneath his lapel.
No one else noticed.
Except Vivienne.
She noticed everything now.
—
Five minutes passed.
Then ten.
The police had not yet arrived.
Instead...
The ballroom doors slowly opened.
Four men entered.
Each wore a perfectly tailored black suit.
Black tie.
White gloves.
Small silver lapel pins shaped like a falcon.
They moved with military precision.
Without speaking.
Without hesitation.
The guests instinctively stepped aside.
Even the musicians stopped breathing.
The tallest man approached the center of the ballroom.
He looked directly at Vivienne.
His expression softened immediately.
He bowed.
Not a casual nod.
A respectful bow.
"Miss Sinclair."
The room froze.
Miss...
Sinclair?
Dominic blinked.
Chloe frowned.
Eleanor laughed loudly.
"This is ridiculous."
She pointed toward Vivienne.
"Who are you people?"
The man ignored her completely.
Instead, he removed his white gloves.
"Miss Sinclair."
"Chairman Sinclair sends his apologies."
"He was in Singapore when he received your call."
"His aircraft has already departed."
"He'll arrive within three hours."
A murmur spread across the room.
Chairman?
Aircraft?
Singapore?
What was happening?
Dominic stared at Vivienne.
"Vivienne..."
She remained silent.
The man continued.
"Until Chairman Sinclair arrives..."
"...we've been instructed to ensure no one leaves the premises."
Chloe burst into laughter.
"You can't stop anyone."
"Who do you think you are?"
The man calmly reached inside his jacket.
Not for a weapon.
For an identification wallet.
He opened it.
Gold lettering reflected beneath the chandelier.
Executive Office of Sinclair International Holdings
Gasps echoed across the ballroom.
Several businessmen instantly recognized the name.
One nearly dropped his champagne glass.
"No..."
"It can't be..."
Another whispered,
"Sinclair International owns luxury hotels across four continents..."
"And private banks..."
"And shipping companies..."
"And media networks..."
Someone else added,
"They bought Meridian Hospitality last year..."
The wedding planner suddenly covered her mouth.
Meridian Hospitality.
The very company that owned this hotel.
Her knees nearly gave out.
—
Eleanor crossed her arms.
"I don't care who you work for."
"This woman stole my daughter's ring."
The lead man finally looked at her.
His expression remained perfectly polite.
"Mrs. Kensington..."
"Allow me to clarify one misunderstanding."
His voice was calm.
"This ballroom..."
He glanced around the magnificent hall.
"...belongs to Sinclair International."
He paused.
"So does this hotel."
Another pause.
"The surrounding property."
"The parking structure."
"The adjoining conference center."
"And every employee currently working inside this building."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
The manager of the hotel hurried forward.
He bowed respectfully toward Vivienne.
"Miss Sinclair."
"We deeply apologize."
"I was unaware you were attending this evening."
Chloe's confident smile disappeared.
"What..."
"What did you just call her?"
The manager swallowed nervously.
"Miss Sinclair."
"Our principal shareholder."
The words exploded like thunder.
Principal...
Shareholder?
Dominic felt as though the floor had vanished beneath him.
"No..."
He looked at Vivienne.
"You told me..."
"...your father owned a small company."
Vivienne met his eyes.
"I never said that."
"You assumed."
His memories flooded back.
Every conversation.
Every question about her family.
Every time she simply smiled instead of answering.
She had never lied.
Not once.
—
Amanda's breathing grew faster.
Much faster.
Her fingers trembled uncontrollably.
One of the security officers quietly noticed.
He subtly changed position.
Blocking the nearest exit.
—
The lead man continued speaking.
"Miss Sinclair."
"Our surveillance department has already secured every recording from tonight."
Chloe's face turned white.
"Recording?"
"Every camera."
"Every angle."
"Every hallway."
"Every entrance."
Amanda nearly dropped her purse.
Vivienne saw it happen.
Their eyes met for less than one second.
Amanda immediately looked away.
Too late.
Vivienne now knew exactly who was afraid.
—
Dominic slowly reached toward his wife.
"Vivienne..."
She stepped backward.
The movement was tiny.
Barely noticeable.
Yet it hurt more than any slap.
"You didn't defend me."
Her voice was quiet.
"You watched."
"I..."
"I was trying to calm everyone."
"No."
She shook her head.
"You were trying to avoid choosing."
His mouth opened.
No words came.
Because she was right.
He hadn't chosen.
He never had.
Every holiday...
Every insult...
Every cruel joke...
Every humiliation...
He had remained silent.
Believing silence was neutrality.
Tonight, he learned silence always chooses a side.
—
Suddenly...
One of the security officers spoke into his earpiece.
"Sir."
"The surveillance team has completed the review."
The lead man nodded.
"Excellent."
He turned toward Vivienne.
"The footage confirms your instructions were correct."
"We know exactly where the ring went."
Every guest leaned forward.
Chloe's heartbeat quickened.
"So..."
She forced a smile.
"You've finally proven she stole it?"
The man looked directly at her.
"No."
His gaze slowly shifted across the room.
Until it stopped on Amanda.
"The footage identifies..."
"...the person who actually took the ring."
Amanda's silver purse slipped from her shaking fingers.
It hit the marble floor with a loud metallic thud.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
The clasp slowly opened.
And from inside...
Something flashed beneath the crystal lights.
A brilliant white sparkle.
The unmistakable fire of a flawless diamond.
The room erupted in stunned gasps.
May you like
Amanda closed her eyes.
She knew it was over.
