Chapter 4 – The Truth Behind Amanda

Chapter 4 – The Truth Behind Amanda

The ballroom had become eerily quiet.

Only moments earlier, it had been filled with music, laughter, and champagne toasts.

Now, it resembled a courtroom.

Nearly two hundred guests remained in place, their eyes fixed on the massive screen standing beneath the crystal chandeliers.

Amanda stood in the center of the room, trembling.

Chloe's face had turned as white as her wedding gown.

Eleanor's jaw was clenched so tightly that the muscles in her neck stood out beneath her pearl necklace.

Vivienne remained silent.

She no longer felt the need to defend herself.

The truth was doing that for her.

The lead security officer stepped forward.

"Ladies and gentlemen," he announced calmly, "the following recording was recovered from the security system in the bridal suite corridor."

Several guests exchanged confused glances.

"Audio?"

"There's audio?"

The officer nodded.

"The cameras inside the bridal suite record both video and sound for security purposes."

Eleanor suddenly interrupted.

"That can't be legal!"

The officer looked at her without emotion.

"The bridal suite entrance is private property owned by Sinclair International. All recording devices are disclosed in the guest agreement signed by the wedding organizers."

He paused.

"Your legal counsel may review the contract later."

A ripple of quiet laughter spread through the crowd.

For the first time that evening, Eleanor had no answer.

The screen lit up again.

7:18 PM

Twenty minutes before the ceremony.

Amanda appeared outside the bridal suite.

She looked nervous, constantly checking over her shoulder.

A second later, Chloe stepped out of the room.

Still wearing her robe, her hair only half finished, she closed the door behind her.

"What took you so long?" Chloe asked impatiently.

"I'm sorry," Amanda replied.

"I had to make sure no one followed me."

Chloe rolled her eyes.

"Relax."

"No one's paying attention to you."

Amanda lowered her voice.

"Are you sure we should do this?"

The guests leaned closer.

Even Dominic stopped breathing.

Chloe folded her arms.

"You've already agreed."

"I know..."

Amanda whispered.

"But she's pregnant."

"So?"

"So maybe..."

"We shouldn't..."

Chloe's expression hardened instantly.

"You owe me."

Amanda looked down.

"I know."

"You owe me one hundred and eighty thousand dollars."

Gasps spread across the ballroom.

One hundred and eighty thousand.

The number hung in the air like a thundercloud.

"I'll pay you back," Amanda pleaded.

"I just need more time."

Chloe laughed.

"You've been saying that for two years."

"I don't have it."

"Exactly."

Chloe stepped closer.

"So tonight..."

"...you'll earn your forgiveness."

Amanda's hands shook violently.

"What if something goes wrong?"

"Nothing will."

The recording continued.

Chloe lowered her voice.

"Listen carefully."

"When I signal you..."

"...take the ring."

Amanda looked horrified.

"What?"

"You heard me."

"But everyone will see."

"They won't."

"I'll scream."

"Everyone will panic."

"Mom will accuse Vivienne."

Amanda swallowed hard.

"And then?"

"Then everyone searches her."

Amanda hesitated.

"What if they don't find it?"

Chloe smiled.

"They won't."

"Because you'll still have it."

Amanda stared at her.

"That's insane."

"No."

Chloe replied calmly.

"It's perfect."

Amanda shook her head repeatedly.

"I can't."

"You can."

"And you will."

The recording suddenly stopped.

The ballroom exploded into whispers.

"Oh my God."

"They planned everything."

"It was a setup."

"They wanted to frame her."

Dominic slowly turned toward his sister.

"You planned this?"

Chloe opened her mouth.

No words came.

The officer raised his hand.

"There is more."

The recording resumed.

Amanda had begun crying.

"I don't want to destroy her marriage."

Chloe sighed dramatically.

"Oh, please."

"Dominic will never leave his family."

"He'll choose us."

Amanda looked uncertain.

"What if he believes her?"

Chloe laughed.

"He never does."

Those four words echoed through the ballroom.

He never does.

Dominic felt his stomach twist.

Because she was right.

Every family dinner.

Every argument.

Every cruel remark aimed at Vivienne.

He had always asked his wife to stay quiet.

To be patient.

To forgive.

He had never once asked his own family to apologize.

The video continued.

Amanda wiped away her tears.

"What if someone checks the cameras?"

Chloe smiled confidently.

"My wedding planner said half the ballroom cameras aren't working."

Amanda frowned.

"You're sure?"

"I'm positive."

Neither woman noticed the technician walking through the hallway behind them carrying a toolbox.

Earlier that afternoon, every security camera in the ballroom had been upgraded.

The planner had simply forgotten.

A single overlooked detail.

Now it threatened to destroy everything.

The screen went black.

Silence filled the room.

Then another voice spoke.

It wasn't Chloe.

It wasn't Amanda.

It was Eleanor.

The timestamp changed.

7:31 PM

Just nine minutes before the ceremony.

Eleanor entered the hallway.

She looked directly at Amanda.

"Are you ready?"

Amanda nodded weakly.

"I still don't like this."

Eleanor smiled.

"My dear..."

"Do you know why snakes survive?"

Amanda looked confused.

"No."

"Because they strike first."

She stepped closer.

"Vivienne doesn't belong in this family."

"Tonight everyone will finally see who she really is."

Amanda whispered,

"But she's innocent."

Eleanor's smile disappeared.

"Innocence has nothing to do with it."

"It only matters what people believe."

A chill swept through the ballroom.

Those words sounded less like a conversation...

...and more like a confession.

Amanda could no longer stand.

She collapsed onto the marble floor.

Sobbing uncontrollably.

"I'm sorry!"

"I'm so sorry!"

"I never wanted to hurt her!"

Nobody rushed to comfort her.

Not Chloe.

Not Eleanor.

Not even the relatives she had tried to protect.

She was completely alone.

Vivienne quietly walked toward Amanda.

The security officers instinctively stepped aside.

Amanda looked up through tear-filled eyes.

"I know you hate me."

Vivienne answered softly.

"I don't."

Amanda blinked.

"You... don't?"

"I pity you."

The words were spoken without anger.

Without satisfaction.

Only sadness.

"You were desperate."

"You needed money."

"You made a terrible choice."

Amanda buried her face in her hands.

"I lost everything."

"My business failed."

"I borrowed money."

"I kept borrowing."

"I thought I could recover."

"But the debts only grew."

Vivienne listened quietly.

"I tried the stock market."

"I gambled."

"I even borrowed from loan sharks."

Amanda's shoulders shook violently.

"They threatened my little brother."

"They said they'd kill him."

"So when Chloe offered..."

"I thought..."

Her voice cracked.

"I thought ruining one person's life would save another."

Tears streamed down her face.

"But I became the monster instead."

For several long seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Vivienne asked one question.

"How much do you still owe?"

Amanda stared at her.

"What?"

"The debt."

Amanda hesitated.

"Two hundred and twelve thousand dollars."

The room fell silent again.

Vivienne nodded slowly.

Then she looked toward the lead security officer.

"Please contact Sinclair Financial Services."

The man nodded immediately.

"Yes, Miss Sinclair."

"Arrange repayment directly to the legitimate creditors."

Amanda's eyes widened in disbelief.

"What...?"

Vivienne continued.

"Illegal lenders will be handled by the authorities."

"You and your brother will receive police protection."

Amanda broke down completely.

"Why?"

After everything she had done...

After falsely accusing her...

After helping humiliate her before hundreds of people...

Why?

Vivienne looked at the frightened woman with calm, compassionate eyes.

"Because someone once taught me..."

She gently rested a hand over her unborn child.

"...that kindness is most powerful when it's hardest to give."

Tears appeared in the eyes of several guests.

Even some who had silently judged Vivienne earlier lowered their heads in shame.

Chloe stared at Vivienne as though she were seeing a stranger.

"No..."

She whispered.

"You're pretending."

"You're trying to make me look evil."

Vivienne turned toward her.

"I don't need to."

Before Chloe could respond, one of the men in black received another message through his earpiece.

He looked toward Vivienne.

"Miss Sinclair..."

"Chairman Arthur Sinclair's aircraft has landed."

A murmur swept across the ballroom.

"The chairman is here."

"He'll arrive in less than ten minutes."

The officer paused before adding quietly,

"And he's not coming alone."

Vivienne's expression remained calm.

But Chloe, Eleanor, and Dominic suddenly felt an inexplicable sense of dread.

May you like

Whoever was walking through those doors with Arthur Sinclair...

Was about to change all of their lives forever.
