Chapter 3 – Security Footage

Chapter 3 – Security Footage

Amanda stared at the diamond ring glittering on the polished marble floor as though it were a venomous snake.

For one long, breathless moment, no one moved.

The entire ballroom seemed frozen in time.

Then Chloe screamed.

"My ring!"

She lunged toward the sparkling stone, but one of the men in black stepped in front of her with a single, deliberate movement.

"I'm afraid no one touches the evidence, ma'am."

His calm voice cut through the chaos.

Amanda's knees buckled.

"I—I can explain..."

"You'll have the opportunity," the lead security officer replied evenly. "But first, we need everyone to remain exactly where they are."

The guests erupted into whispers.

"Oh my God..."

"It wasn't Vivienne."

"Then why did Amanda..."

"I knew something felt wrong."

Across the room, Dominic stood motionless.

His gaze shifted from the recovered ring...

...to his wife.

Vivienne hadn't said a single word.

She simply stood there, holding the torn edges of her maternity gown together, her dignity somehow untouched despite everything that had happened.

For the first time since he had met her, Dominic realized something he should have understood years ago.

She had never defended herself because she didn't need to.

The truth always had.

Amanda suddenly dropped to her knees.

"It wasn't supposed to happen like this!"

Chloe stared at her cousin in disbelief.

"What are you talking about?"

Amanda burst into tears.

"I didn't mean for everyone to find out."

"You stole my ring?"

"No!"

Amanda shouted.

"I borrowed it!"

The ballroom fell silent once more.

"Borrowed?" Chloe repeated.

"What kind of insane excuse is that?"

Amanda looked desperately toward Eleanor.

"Aunt Eleanor... please..."

But Eleanor took a step backward.

Her expression hardened instantly.

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

Amanda's eyes widened.

"You told me..."

"Enough."

Eleanor's voice was cold.

"I will not be dragged into your lies."

Amanda's face drained of color.

She finally understood.

She had been abandoned.

The lead security officer touched the earpiece hidden beneath his collar.

"Bring the footage."

Within seconds, two hotel technicians wheeled a large mobile display screen into the ballroom.

The guests instinctively gathered closer.

The photographers who had been hired to capture the wedding quietly lowered their cameras.

No staged wedding portrait could compare to what was about to unfold.

The screen flickered to life.

A timestamp appeared.

7:42 PM

The ballroom entrance.

Guests arriving.

Servers carrying champagne.

Musicians tuning their instruments.

Everything appeared perfectly ordinary.

The footage fast-forwarded.

8:11 PM

Chloe stood laughing with several bridesmaids.

Her enormous diamond ring sparkled beneath the chandeliers.

Another camera angle appeared.

High above the ballroom.

A bird's-eye view.

Every table.

Every guest.

Every movement.

The lead officer spoke.

"This footage has not been edited."

"It is synchronized from six security cameras."

"We will allow everyone to watch exactly as events occurred."

No one objected.

The video continued.

Vivienne appeared.

She slowly walked toward the champagne fountain after excusing herself from a conversation with one of Dominic's elderly relatives.

She looked exhausted.

Being eight months pregnant clearly made standing difficult.

She poured herself a glass of sparkling water.

Nothing more.

The footage switched again.

Another angle.

Chloe posed for photographs with several guests.

Amanda approached her from behind.

The two women hugged.

Amanda leaned close.

She appeared to whisper something into Chloe's ear.

Then...

She reached toward Chloe's left hand.

At first, it looked completely innocent.

Like she was simply adjusting the bride's veil.

Or brushing away a loose strand of hair.

The guests watched carefully.

Frame by frame.

Amanda's fingers moved with astonishing precision.

She gently twisted the diamond ring.

Slid it from Chloe's finger.

And concealed it inside her own palm.

The entire movement lasted less than two seconds.

"So that's how..." someone whispered.

The footage paused.

A stunned silence spread across the ballroom.

Then the technician zoomed in.

Crystal clear.

Amanda's hand.

The ring.

Every detail unmistakable.

"No..."

Chloe staggered backward.

"No..."

Amanda covered her face with both hands.

"I'm sorry..."

The footage resumed.

Amanda quietly slipped the ring into her silver purse while everyone applauded the newlyweds during a toast.

No one noticed.

No one except the cameras.

Minutes later...

The video showed Amanda glancing repeatedly toward Vivienne.

Toward Eleanor.

Toward Chloe.

As if waiting.

Then Chloe suddenly looked at her own finger.

She screamed.

"My ring!"

Everything that happened afterward unfolded exactly as everyone had witnessed.

Except now...

There was one crucial difference.

The truth had been preserved forever.

A voice broke the silence.

"Pause."

It came from Vivienne.

For the first time since the accusations began, everyone looked toward her.

She pointed calmly at the screen.

"There."

The technician rewound several seconds.

Amanda stealing the ring.

Pause.

Vivienne shook her head.

"Not there."

"Five seconds earlier."

The footage moved backward.

Again.

Again.

Then stopped.

The image froze.

Amanda wasn't looking at Chloe.

She was looking somewhere else.

Toward the opposite side of the ballroom.

Toward...

Eleanor.

The elderly woman gave the slightest nod.

Barely noticeable.

Less than half an inch.

But unmistakable.

Amanda nodded back.

Then walked toward Chloe.

The room exploded into gasps.

"No..."

"Did Eleanor know?"

"That couldn't have been coincidence."

Eleanor's confidence vanished for the first time that evening.

"That means nothing!"

"It was just a glance!"

Vivienne remained composed.

"Continue."

The footage played once more.

After Amanda stole the ring...

She didn't panic.

She calmly walked across the ballroom.

As she passed Eleanor...

The older woman subtly stepped sideways.

Blocking the view of several nearby guests.

Only for three seconds.

Just long enough.

Long enough to shield Amanda while she slipped the ring into her purse.

The lead security officer stopped the video.

He didn't need to say anything.

Everyone had seen it.

Every second.

Every movement.

Every glance.

Dominic turned slowly toward his mother.

His face had gone completely pale.

"Mom..."

Eleanor immediately shook her head.

"You don't believe this."

"I didn't tell her to steal anything."

"I was protecting your sister!"

"But why point at Vivienne?"

Dominic asked.

His voice was barely recognizable.

No one answered.

Instead...

An elderly woman from Chloe's side of the family quietly stood.

"I think I know why."

Every head turned toward her.

She adjusted her glasses.

"I was standing beside Amanda before the ceremony."

She swallowed.

"I heard Chloe say something."

Chloe's eyes widened.

"Grandma..."

The elderly woman continued anyway.

"She said..."

"If that cheap little wife embarrasses us today, I'll finally get rid of her."

The ballroom became deathly silent.

Chloe's face turned ghost white.

"That's not what I meant."

But nobody believed her.

Vivienne closed her eyes for a brief moment.

For three years...

Every insult.

Every cold dinner.

Every holiday spent feeling invisible.

She had convinced herself they were simply difficult people.

Tonight she finally understood.

None of it had been accidental.

They had never intended to accept her.

They had only been waiting for an excuse to destroy her.

She slowly opened her eyes.

The sadness inside them was gone.

In its place stood something infinitely more dangerous.

Resolve.

The lead security officer stepped forward once more.

"Miss Sinclair."

"Our investigators have one final recording."

"It was captured in the bridal suite."

"It contains audio."

He glanced toward Chloe and Eleanor.

"I believe everyone deserves to hear it."

The color drained from both women's faces simultaneously.

Whatever was on that recording...

It frightened them far more than the security footage ever had.

And for the first time that night...

May you like

Chloe looked at Vivienne not with contempt—

but with fear.
