Chapter 10 â The Husband's Choice

Chapter 10 â The Husband's Choice
The divorce papers arrived on a Friday.
They were delivered in a plain white envelope.
No dramatic confrontation.
No shouting.
No tears.
Just a courier standing quietly outside the penthouse apartment at 9:14 a.m.
Lucinda signed without looking.
She assumed they were more legal documents connected to the lawsuit.
She didn't notice the sender until the courier had already left.
Petition for Dissolution of Marriage
Filed by: Adrian Moss
For several seconds...
She simply stared.
Then she laughed.
A short, dismissive laugh.
"He'll come to his senses."
She called him immediately.
Straight to voicemail.
Again.
Voicemail.
By the fifth call, she stopped pretending she wasn't worried.
She left a message.
"Adrian, this isn't funny."
Another.
"We need to talk."
Then another.
"You can't divorce me because of one misunderstanding."
Silence answered every call.
Across town...
Adrian sat in a small conference room overlooking the James River.
His attorney slid another document across the table.
"You understand this will become public."
"I know."
"The media will connect it to the investigation."
"I expect them to."
His attorney hesitated.
"You still have time to reconsider."
Adrian looked out the window.
He remembered the wedding.
Mara lying unconscious on a stretcher.
Caleb covered in blood.
Grace disappearing into the ambulance.
Then he remembered something even smaller.
Lucinda adjusting her veil while paramedics ran past.
Asking whether the photographers had captured her "good side."
That memory had never left him.
"No."
He said quietly.
"I don't need more time."
At Richmond Memorial Hospital...
Grace no longer needed her incubator.
The nurses carefully transferred her into a regular bassinet.
It felt like a miracle.
Mara smiled through exhausted tears.
"Look at you."
"So determined."
Grace yawned.
Then opened her eyes.
This time...
She stayed awake.
Long enough to study her mother's face.
Caleb laughed softly.
"I think she recognizes you."
Dr. Carter smiled.
"Babies know more than we give them credit for."
The joy lasted only a few minutes.
Officer Brooks appeared in the doorway.
He looked uncomfortable.
"I'm sorry to interrupt."
Mara's smile faded.
"What happened?"
"The Commonwealth's Attorney approved formal charges."
Caleb slowly stood.
"Against my mother?"
Brooks nodded.
"Eleanor Vale has been charged with unlawful imprisonment, reckless endangerment, and felony neglect resulting in serious bodily harm."
The room fell silent.
Mara looked instinctively toward Grace.
"So..."
"It's real now."
Brooks answered gently.
"Yes."
Meanwhile...
Richard Vale stood alone inside the executive boardroom.
Every chair around the polished mahogany table was occupied.
Not by family.
By directors.
Investors.
Outside counsel.
For the first time in company history...
An emergency meeting had been called because of the family's personal conduct.
The chairman cleared his throat.
"Mr. Vale..."
"Our shareholders have concerns."
Richard nodded.
"I understand."
"The company's reputation has suffered."
"I know."
A board member leaned forward.
"Several institutional investors are threatening to withdraw."
Another added,
"Our lenders are asking whether the criminal investigation could expose the company to additional liability."
Richard listened without interruption.
Finally...
He stood.
"I have spent thirty-eight years protecting this business."
"My wife spent thirty-eight years protecting our family name."
He paused.
"We confused the two."
The room remained silent.
"Today..."
"I won't."
He placed a folder on the table.
"My resignation."
Gasps echoed around the room.
The chairman blinked.
"Richard..."
"If stepping aside gives this company a chance to survive..."
"...then it's the first useful thing I've done in a long time."
News of Richard's resignation spread within an hour.
The headlines changed.
VALE HOLDINGS CEO STEPS DOWN AMID FAMILY SCANDAL
For the first time...
People realized the consequences were no longer limited to one wedding.
The entire empire was cracking.
That evening...
Caleb received a phone call.
It was his father.
"I resigned."
"I heard."
There was a long silence.
"I wanted you to know before you saw it on television."
"Thank you."
Richard took a shaky breath.
"I don't expect forgiveness."
"I know."
"I only wanted..."
His voice broke.
"...to tell you I'm proud of you."
Caleb closed his eyes.
"You are?"
"You chose your wife."
"You chose your daughter."
"I should've done the same."
Neither man spoke for several moments.
Years of distance couldn't disappear in one conversation.
But perhaps...
They had finally begun walking in the same direction.
Lucinda wasn't ready to let go.
She drove to Adrian's office without warning.
His receptionist stood as she entered.
"I'm here to see my husband."
The young woman hesitated.
"Mr. Moss instructed us not to schedule any appointments."
"I don't need an appointment."
She pushed past.
Adrian looked up as she entered his office.
"You shouldn't be here."
She threw the divorce papers onto his desk.
"What is this?"
"You've already read it."
"You can't be serious."
"I've never been more serious."
She laughed bitterly.
"You're throwing away our marriage over Caleb's wife?"
"No."
He answered quietly.
"I'm ending it because I finally saw yours."
Her smile disappeared.
"What does that mean?"
"It means..."
He stood.
"...that I watched a woman almost die."
"And your first concern..."
"...was whether the reception would continue."
Lucinda folded her arms.
"You always knew who I was."
"I thought I did."
He walked around the desk.
"I believed you were ambitious."
"Confident."
"Strong."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"I didn't realize you'd mistaken compassion for weakness."
Silence.
Then Lucinda whispered,
"So you're choosing them."
Adrian shook his head.
"No."
"I'm choosing the kind of man I still want to be."
She slapped him.
The sound echoed through the office.
Neither of them moved.
Finally...
Adrian spoke.
"I won't call security."
"You can leave with your dignity."
"Or without it."
Lucinda stared at him.
For a moment...
She almost apologized.
Almost.
Instead...
She turned and walked away.
The office door closed softly behind her.
Neither of them looked back.
Late that night...
Mara sat beside Grace's bassinet.
The hospital room was quiet.
Only the soft rhythm of Grace's breathing filled the silence.
Caleb wrapped an arm around his wife.
"I've been thinking."
She smiled.
"That usually means trouble."
He laughed.
"It means a promise."
"What kind?"
He looked down at their daughter.
"The day she asks us what happened..."
"We'll tell her the truth."
Mara nodded.
"No lies."
"No pretending."
"No protecting people who hurt others."
Caleb kissed Grace's tiny forehead.
"Our family ends that tradition."
Outside the room...
Officer Brooks watched through the small glass window.
He had spent years investigating crimes.
Most cases ended with arrests.
Some ended with convictions.
Very few ended with healing.
This one wasn't over.
Not even close.
The trial still lay ahead.
Eleanor had not spoken publicly.
Lucinda was refusing every request for comment.
And someone...
Someone still hadn't been held accountable.
Because Detective Rachel Monroe had just discovered evidence suggesting Eleanor hadn't acted entirely alone.
Somebody else had known.
Somebody else had helped keep Mara trapped.
And by the time that secret reached the courtroom...
Another member of the Vale family would have to make the hardest choice of all.
