Chapter 4 – The Wedding Continues

Chapter 4 – The Wedding Continues

The first cry of Mara and Caleb's daughter came at 6:47 p.m.

It was weak.

Painfully weak.

For a single heartbeat, everyone inside Operating Room Three stopped moving.

Then the neonatal team rushed forward.

"Heart rate dropping."

"Oxygen."

"Move!"

The tiny infant disappeared beneath a cluster of doctors and nurses before Caleb ever had the chance to see her.

Behind the operating room doors, another team worked desperately to stabilize Mara.

Outside...

Caleb stood alone in the hallway, staring at the red light above the operating room.

His phone vibrated.

Mom

He ignored it.

Thirty seconds later, it rang again.

Then again.

Finally, he answered.

"What?"

Eleanor sounded annoyed rather than frightened.

"Where are you?"

Caleb closed his eyes.

"At the hospital."

"You left the reception without saying anything."

"My wife almost died."

There was a brief silence.

Then Eleanor sighed.

"The guests are asking questions."

Caleb said nothing.

"People are beginning to speculate."

"We need to control the story."

That sentence landed harder than a slap.

"My daughter is in intensive care."

"And you're worried about gossip?"

"I'm worried about our family's reputation."

Caleb lowered the phone from his ear for a moment.

He wondered if he had misheard her.

When he spoke again, his voice was almost calm.

"No."

"You've spent your entire life worrying about our family's reputation."

"I'm worrying about my family."

He ended the call.

Hawthorne Manor

The ballroom glittered beneath crystal chandeliers.

A seven-piece orchestra played softly while waiters carried silver trays through the crowd.

Guests laughed.

Wine flowed freely.

The bride and groom made their rounds, accepting congratulations.

If someone had walked into the room at that moment...

They would never have guessed that only an hour earlier a pregnant woman had been carried out on a stretcher.

Lucinda adjusted the lace sleeves of her wedding gown.

She smiled for another photograph.

Then leaned toward Eleanor.

"Has Caleb called?"

"He answered."

"And?"

"He's emotional."

Lucinda frowned.

"So she's really in labor?"

Eleanor nodded.

"I suppose so."

Lucinda looked toward the ballroom entrance.

"He'll come back for the first dance."

Eleanor didn't answer.

Across the room, whispers had already begun.

"I heard an ambulance came."

"Someone said Caleb's wife collapsed."

"No..."

"I heard she was bleeding."

"It happened upstairs."

Several guests exchanged uneasy glances.

One elderly woman quietly put down her champagne.

"Why didn't they stop the ceremony?"

No one had an answer.

Adrian noticed the mood changing.

He walked toward Lucinda.

"Maybe we should make an announcement."

"What kind of announcement?"

"That Mara is at the hospital."

Lucinda's smile vanished.

"Absolutely not."

"People will leave."

"They should."

"This is our wedding."

Adrian stared at her.

"Our wedding will still exist tomorrow."

"If something happens to your sister-in-law..."

Lucinda interrupted sharply.

"She's not my responsibility."

Those words didn't go unnoticed.

Two nearby guests looked at one another.

Without saying a word, they quietly collected their coats.

Back at Richmond Memorial Hospital...

Caleb finally met his daughter.

She weighed just over six pounds.

She looked impossibly small beneath the tangle of tubes and monitors surrounding her incubator.

A nurse smiled gently.

"Would you like to touch her hand?"

He nodded.

With one shaking finger, he reached through the incubator.

The baby's tiny hand instinctively curled around his fingertip.

Caleb broke.

Tears streamed down his face.

"I'm sorry."

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

"I wasn't there."

The nurse rested a comforting hand on his shoulder.

"She knows you're here now."

He wished that were enough.

Dr. Evelyn Carter entered the NICU carrying a chart.

"Mr. Vale."

He immediately stood.

"How is she?"

"The next twenty-four hours are critical."

He swallowed.

"And Mara?"

"She's awake."

"Can I see her?"

The doctor nodded.

"But don't let her become stressed."

Stress.

The word felt almost cruel.

How could she not be?

Mara opened her eyes as Caleb entered her room.

She looked exhausted.

Her skin was pale.

Dark circles rested beneath her eyes.

Yet the first words she spoke weren't about herself.

"Our baby?"

Caleb forced a smile.

"She's beautiful."

Mara searched his face.

"Don't lie to me."

His shoulders sagged.

"She's fighting."

A tear rolled silently down Mara's cheek.

"I knew something was wrong."

She closed her eyes.

"I could feel it."

Caleb sat beside her bed.

He took her hand carefully.

"I'm so sorry."

She didn't answer.

Not because she was angry.

Because she had no strength left.

Several minutes passed before she finally asked,

"What time did you find me?"

He looked down.

"A little after six-thirty."

She did the math immediately.

"My water broke..."

"...at five-fifty-one."

Neither of them spoke.

Forty minutes.

Almost forty-five by the time the ambulance arrived.

An eternity during complicated labor.

"Did your mother..."

Mara hesitated.

"...say anything?"

Caleb didn't want to answer.

Finally, he nodded.

"She called."

"What did she want?"

He laughed bitterly.

"She wanted me back at the reception."

Mara stared at the ceiling.

Somehow...

That hurt more than hearing the lock turn.

The Reception Ends

At Hawthorne Manor, the final dance ended shortly after ten.

The orchestra packed away their instruments.

Guests departed quietly.

Many offered polite smiles.

Few offered warm congratulations.

The atmosphere had changed.

Something ugly lingered beneath the elegance.

As the last luxury car disappeared down the driveway, Eleanor finally looked around.

"Where's Caleb?"

Lucinda sighed.

"Still at the hospital."

Eleanor's expression tightened.

"He should've returned."

Adrian looked at his new mother-in-law in disbelief.

"My wife nearly lost her sister-in-law."

"My granddaughter is in intensive care."

"And you think Caleb should've come back to cut the cake?"

Eleanor answered without hesitation.

"The family had obligations."

Adrian looked at Lucinda.

She remained silent.

He realized, with a chill, that she agreed.

Back at the hospital...

A young police officer stepped into Mara's room.

He removed his hat respectfully.

"Mrs. Vale?"

Mara looked at him.

"I'm Officer Daniel Brooks."

"We've been asked to document what happened before you arrived."

Caleb frowned.

"Who requested that?"

The officer glanced at his notebook.

"The emergency physician."

"He believes your delayed medical treatment may require investigation."

The room became very still.

Officer Brooks clicked his pen.

"Mrs. Vale..."

"Can you tell me..."

"...who locked you inside that bathroom?"

Mara closed her eyes.

She could still hear it.

The soft click of the brass lock.

The footsteps fading down the hallway.

The wedding music beginning.

When she opened her eyes again, there was no hesitation.

"Eleanor Vale."

She spoke the name clearly.

The officer wrote it down.

Outside the hospital room, Dr. Carter watched through the small window.

She had delivered hundreds of babies.

She had seen accidents.

Neglect.

Abuse.

But something about this case unsettled her.

A healthy woman at full term.

Locked alone while in labor.

She quietly turned to the charge nurse.

"Preserve every medical record."

"Every minute."

"I have a feeling this family is about to become the center of something much bigger than a difficult delivery."

And across town...

Hidden high above the entrance of Hawthorne Manor...

A security camera had silently recorded everything.

Including one elegant woman calmly locking a bathroom door...

And walking away.
