Chapter 3 â The Husband Who Didn't Come

Chapter 3 â The Husband Who Didn't Come
Caleb slammed his shoulder into the bathroom door.
The heavy oak shuddered.
But it didn't open.
"Mara!"
His voice cracked for the first time in years.
"I'm here!"
Inside, Mara struggled to answer.
Another contraction stole every breath before she could speak.
Her forehead rested against the cool marble floor.
Blood stained the torn fabric of her maternity dress.
She pressed one trembling hand against her belly.
"Hold on, sweetheart..."
"Daddy's here."
Outside, Caleb heard only a muffled cry.
His heart dropped.
"Get me something to break this door!"
The groundskeeper looked around frantically.
"I'll get a crowbar!"
"Now!"
Within seconds, more people rushed into the hallway.
Bridesmaids.
Hotel staff.
Wedding planners.
No one understood why the groom's brother was pounding on a locked bathroom door.
Then Eleanor appeared.
She walked calmly through the crowd, still carrying a crystal champagne flute.
"What is all this noise?"
Caleb turned toward her.
His face had gone pale.
"Mom."
"Unlock the door."
She blinked.
"What door?"
"This one!"
He pointed at the bathroom.
"Mara's inside!"
For the first time that evening, Eleanor hesitated.
Only for a second.
Then her expression settled back into perfect composure.
"Oh."
"I thought she'd calmed down."
Caleb stared at her.
"What did you just say?"
"I told her to rest until the ceremony was over."
"You..."
His voice became dangerously quiet.
"You knew she was in labor?"
"She was emotional."
"She said her water broke!"
"Pregnant women exaggerate."
Caleb looked at his mother as though he had never seen her before.
"Unlock."
"The."
"Door."
Eleanor folded her arms.
"I don't have the key."
The wedding planner whispered,
"Mrs. Vale..."
"Maintenance has the master key."
The groundskeeper returned, carrying a heavy iron pry bar.
Caleb snatched it from his hands.
He didn't wait.
The first strike splintered the wooden frame.
The second cracked the lock.
The third sent the door flying inward.
The smell hit him first.
Blood.
Sweat.
Broken glass.
Then he saw her.
Mara lay curled on the marble floor beside the shattered vanity mirror.
One hand protected her stomach.
The other was covered in cuts from broken glass.
Her lips were nearly blue.
She looked up slowly.
"Hi..."
She tried to smile.
It broke Caleb's heart.
"Oh, God..."
He dropped beside her.
"I'm so sorry."
She didn't answer.
Another contraction tore through her body.
She screamed.
The sound echoed through the silent hallway.
Behind Caleb, every guest froze.
Lucinda still wore her wedding gown.
Adrian loosened his tie.
Even the photographer lowered his camera.
No one had expected this.
No one had imagined that while they exchanged congratulations downstairs...
A pregnant woman had been giving birth alone on a bathroom floor.
A hotel employee shouted,
"The ambulance is five minutes away!"
The wedding planner shook her head.
"She doesn't have five minutes."
Mara suddenly grabbed Caleb's sleeve.
"The baby..."
"I can't..."
"The pressure..."
Caleb remembered nothing from their childbirth classes except one terrifying sentence.
If she says she feels pressure, the baby is coming.
He looked wildly toward the staff.
"Someone get a doctor!"
"There isn't one here!"
"Then call 911 again!"
"They're already coming!"
Eleanor stood silently in the doorway.
She looked at the broken mirror.
The shattered vase.
The blood.
For the first time...
A flicker of uncertainty crossed her face.
Lucinda stepped beside her.
"This is ruining everything."
Several nearby guests turned toward her in disbelief.
"What?"
Lucinda whispered.
"The reception..."
"My wedding..."
Caleb slowly stood.
He looked first at his sister.
Then at his mother.
Neither appeared frightened.
Only inconvenienced.
Something inside him snapped.
"My wife..."
He said quietly.
"...could have died."
Neither woman spoke.
"Our daughter..."
"...could still die."
Silence.
Then Eleanor answered.
"Let's not become hysterical before we know the facts."
Caleb stared at her.
Then, without another word...
He turned his back on both of them.
The paramedics arrived moments later.
Their expressions changed the instant they entered the bathroom.
"Female."
"Thirty-eight weeks."
"Possible hemorrhage."
"Emergency delivery."
One medic knelt beside Mara.
"When did your water break?"
She whispered,
"I..."
"I don't know..."
Caleb looked at his watch.
His stomach twisted.
"About forty-five minutes ago."
The medic's face hardened.
"Forty-five?"
"Why wasn't she transported immediately?"
No one answered.
The silence said enough.
Within seconds, Mara was placed on a stretcher.
She grabbed Caleb's hand.
"Don't..."
"...leave me."
"I won't."
"I promise."
As they rushed toward the ambulance, Caleb glanced back only once.
Eleanor still stood in the hallway.
Lucinda beside her.
Wedding guests watched in stunned silence.
Crystal chandeliers still glittered overhead.
Flowers still lined the corridor.
Soft music still floated up from the ballroom.
The wedding continued.
But something had died inside that mansion.
Richmond Memorial Hospital
The ambulance doors burst open.
Doctors were already waiting.
"Thirty-year-old."
"Thirty-eight weeks."
"Delayed labor."
"Possible fetal distress."
Mara was wheeled away before Caleb could follow.
A nurse stopped him.
"You need to wait here."
"I'm her husband."
"I know."
"But if we have to operate..."
"We can't have anyone in the room."
The operating room doors slammed shut.
A red light illuminated above them.
Caleb stood frozen.
His suit was stained with Mara's blood.
Twenty minutes later...
A senior obstetrician emerged.
His surgical cap was still on.
His expression was grave.
"Mr. Vale?"
Caleb rushed forward.
"My wife?"
"She's alive."
Caleb nearly collapsed with relief.
"And my daughter?"
The doctor didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he removed his gloves.
"There were complications."
"The labor progressed far longer than it should have after her water broke."
Caleb felt the floor disappear beneath him.
"Is she alive?"
"Yes."
"But she's in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit."
The doctor's voice grew quieter.
"She suffered oxygen deprivation."
"We won't know the full extent until the next twenty-four to forty-eight hours."
Caleb closed his eyes.
One sentence echoed over and over in his mind.
Forty-five minutes.
Forty-five minutes trapped behind a locked door.
Forty-five minutes that could change his daughter's entire life.
At that exact moment...
Back at Hawthorne Manor...
Lucinda and Adrian entered the reception ballroom to thunderous applause.
The band began to play.
Champagne flowed.
Guests raised their glasses.
Eleanor stood beside the newlyweds, smiling gracefully for the cameras.
The photographer captured what would become the final official portrait of the perfect Vale family.
No one in that photograph knew...
That less than ten miles away...
A tiny newborn girl was fighting for every breath.
And before sunrise...
The entire family would learn that no wedding was worth the price they had forced a child to pay.
