Chapter 13 — The Fortune They Tried to Steal

Chapter 13 — The Fortune They Tried to Steal
Marcus had always believed money could buy time.
Time to lie.
Time to disappear.
Time to betray someone else before they betrayed him.
But on the morning Claire's confession became public, Marcus discovered something he had never considered.
Money could not buy him a way out.
And when the walls finally closed around him, he did what he had always done.
He chose himself.
He betrayed Claire.
The investigators entered Marcus's office at 6:14 a.m.
He was already packing.
Two suitcases.
A passport.
Three phones.
And a black leather folder.
The moment he saw the agents, he stopped.
“Mr. Vale,” the lead investigator said.
Marcus smiled.
“Do you have a warrant?”
“Yes.”
The smile disappeared.
The investigator held up the document.
“We'll be taking everything.”
Marcus looked at the folder.
Then at the window.
Then back at the agents.
“Everything?”
“Everything.”
Marcus sighed.
“You're making a mistake.”
“No.”
The investigator stepped closer.
“You did.”
The first thing they seized was the laptop.
The second was the phone.
The third was the black folder.
Marcus tried to stop them.
“That contains privileged information.”
“Not anymore.”
The folder was opened.
Inside were contracts.
Bank statements.
Copies of Daniel's identity documents.
And a list of payments.
The investigator scanned it.
Then looked at Marcus.
“Who is Evelyn Black?”
Marcus said nothing.
“Who is she?”
“I don't know.”
The investigator placed another document on the table.
“Then explain this.”
Marcus stared.
A payment.
$750,000.
Recipient:
E. BLACK CONSULTING
Marcus's face changed.
“I don't remember.”
“You signed it.”
“I sign hundreds of documents.”
“Not this one.”
The investigator turned the page.
“Because this payment was made from the Carter Family Trust.”
Marcus froze.
“That isn't possible.”
“It happened.”
“How?”
The investigator smiled coldly.
“You tell us.”
Across town, Daniel watched the news.
The headline appeared:
MARCUS VALE ARRESTED IN MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR FRAUD INVESTIGATION
Lily sat beside him eating cereal.
“Is that the bad man?”
Daniel turned off the television.
“Yes.”
“Is he going to hurt us?”
“No.”
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
Lily nodded.
Then she asked:
“What happens to Mommy?”
Daniel paused.
“She has to answer for what she did.”
“Will she go to jail?”
“I don't know.”
Lily looked down.
“I still love her.”
Daniel swallowed.
“You're allowed to.”
She looked at him.
“Even if she did bad things?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because love isn't a reward.”
Lily smiled faintly.
“That's what you always say.”
Daniel kissed her forehead.
Then his phone rang.
Rachel.
“Daniel, we have a problem.”
He met her an hour later.
She placed three folders on the table.
“The transfer network is collapsing.”
“Good.”
“Not entirely.”
Daniel frowned.
“What remains?”
“The original trust.”
Daniel sat down.
“I thought we secured it.”
“We secured the current assets.”
“What about the historical accounts?”
Rachel opened the first folder.
“There are assets your family never disclosed.”
“How much?”
She looked at him.
“Approximately four hundred million dollars.”
Daniel stared.
“What?”
“The fortune Claire and Marcus tried to steal was only part of it.”
“Where is the rest?”
“We don't know.”
Rachel opened another file.
“The accounts were created twenty-two years ago.”
Daniel's stomach tightened.
“By my father.”
“Yes.”
“Who controls them?”
“That is the problem.”
She slid a document toward him.
AUTHORIZED BENEFICIARY: ELENA CARTER
Daniel stared.
His sister.
The daughter his family had erased.
“But Elena is alive.”
“Yes.”
“Then the money belongs to her.”
“Apparently.”
Daniel leaned back.
“Why would my father hide four hundred million dollars for her?”
Rachel looked at him.
“Maybe because he knew she would eventually need it.”
Meanwhile, Marcus was making his own deal.
He sat in an interrogation room with his attorney.
“I want immunity.”
His attorney stared at him.
“You're not in a position to demand immunity.”
“I have information.”
“Everyone has information.”
“I have enough to destroy half the people investigating me.”
The attorney leaned forward.
“Then use it.”
Marcus smiled.
“I want protection.”
“For what?”
“My life.”
The attorney looked at him.
“Who are you afraid of?”
Marcus didn't answer.
“Marcus.”
He finally whispered:
“Evelyn.”
His attorney froze.
“Evelyn Black?”
Marcus nodded.
“She isn't who you think she is.”
The investigators returned.
Marcus immediately asked for a deal.
“I'll testify.”
“Against whom?”
“Everyone.”
“Start with Claire.”
Marcus smiled bitterly.
“She was easy.”
“Explain.”
“She wanted money.”
“So?”
“I gave her what she wanted.”
“Why?”
“Because she was useful.”
“How?”
“She had access to Daniel.”
The investigator leaned forward.
“Did she know the full plan?”
“No.”
“What did she know?”
“Enough to incriminate herself.”
“And the financial scheme?”
“Mine.”
“Alone?”
Marcus hesitated.
“No.”
“Who helped?”
Marcus looked at the camera.
Then said:
“Daniel's uncle.”
The investigator asked:
“And who controlled your uncle?”
Marcus's face became expressionless.
“That is the question you should be asking.”
“Answer it.”
Marcus shook his head.
“I won't.”
“You want immunity.”
“Yes.”
“Then you talk.”
Marcus leaned back.
“Give me protection first.”
The investigator left the room.
Marcus smiled.
He believed he had won.
He hadn't.
At 4:00 p.m., Daniel received an encrypted message.
Marcus wants to see you.
Daniel refused.
Then another message arrived.
He has the name of the person behind everything.
Daniel stared.
He called Rachel.
“Do we trust him?”
“No.”
“Can we hear him?”
“Yes.”
“Then arrange it.”
The meeting took place behind glass.
Marcus looked older.
The arrogance was gone.
Daniel sat opposite him.
Marcus smiled.
“You look tired.”
Daniel said nothing.
“You won.”
“No.”
Marcus raised an eyebrow.
“You stopped the money.”
“Yes.”
“You destroyed the plan.”
“Yes.”
“You got Claire to confess.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Claire confessed because she finally told the truth.”
Marcus laughed.
“Truth.”
He leaned closer to the glass.
“Do you really think you've heard the truth?”
Daniel's eyes hardened.
“What do you know?”
“Everything.”
“Then talk.”
Marcus smiled.
“I'll give you one thing.”
“What?”
“Your money.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
“I'm willing to tell you how to recover everything they moved.”
“Why?”
“Because I want something.”
“Immunity.”
“Yes.”
“You don't get to negotiate.”
Marcus shrugged.
“Then your fortune disappears.”
Daniel stared.
“What do you mean?”
Marcus leaned back.
“There are accounts you don't know about.”
“Four hundred million.”
Marcus's smile vanished.
“So you found those.”
“Who controls them?”
Marcus didn't answer.
Daniel leaned forward.
“Elena?”
Marcus stared at him.
“You know her name.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Your file.”
Marcus looked down.
For the first time, he seemed genuinely frightened.
“You shouldn't have found that.”
“Why?”
“Because Elena isn't the beneficiary.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Marcus whispered:
“She is the reason the trust exists.”
Daniel stared.
“Explain.”
Marcus shook his head.
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because if I tell you, she dies.”
Silence.
Daniel's blood ran cold.
“Who wants her dead?”
Marcus looked toward the camera.
Then whispered:
“Your father.”
Daniel's face went blank.
“My father is dead.”
Marcus smiled.
“Exactly.”
Daniel stood abruptly.
“You're lying.”
Marcus didn't move.
“Your father died twelve years ago.”
“Yes.”
“Then how could he be controlling anything?”
Marcus leaned closer.
“Because he left instructions.”
“What instructions?”
“Kill Elena if she returns.”
Daniel stared.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“It will.”
Marcus reached into his pocket.
The guards immediately moved.
He held up a tiny key.
“A safety deposit box.”
Daniel looked at it.
“Where?”
“St. Vincent Bank.”
“What's inside?”
“The original contract.”
“What contract?”
“The agreement your father made twenty-two years ago.”
Daniel's heart pounded.
“With whom?”
Marcus whispered:
“Evelyn Black.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Who is Evelyn Black?”
Marcus shook his head.
“You've been asking the wrong question.”
“Then answer the right one.”
Marcus looked directly at him.
“Evelyn Black isn't a woman.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“It's an organization.”
Daniel said nothing.
Marcus continued.
“A private financial network.”
“Controlled by whom?”
Marcus hesitated.
“Your family.”
Daniel's face hardened.
“You're saying my father created it?”
“Yes.”
“Then why was Marcus Vale involved?”
“Because your father needed someone outside the family.”
“And my uncle?”
“He was the bridge.”
Daniel felt sick.
“Claire?”
“Collateral.”
“Lily?”
Marcus looked away.
“Leverage.”
Daniel's fists tightened.
“And me?”
Marcus looked at him.
“The successor.”
The word echoed in Daniel's mind.
Successor.
He had spent his entire life believing he inherited a business.
Apparently, he had inherited something much larger.
A network.
Accounts.
Secrets.
Enemies.
And perhaps a war that had started before he was born.
Marcus stood.
“There is one more thing.”
“What?”
“Your father never intended you to inherit the fortune.”
Daniel froze.
“Then who?”
Marcus looked at him.
“Elena.”
That night, Daniel went to St. Vincent Bank.
Rachel accompanied him.
The safety deposit box was opened under court authorization.
Inside was a single envelope.
No money.
No jewelry.
No documents about the company.
Only one handwritten letter.
Daniel recognized his father's handwriting.
He opened it.
The first line made his heart stop.
Daniel, if you are reading this, then Elena has returned.
He continued.
I did not erase her because I hated her.
Daniel's hands shook.
I erased her because she knew what I had done.
He stopped.
Rachel stared at him.
“What did he do?”
Daniel kept reading.
The next line answered it.
I ordered the death of Marcus Vale's father.
Daniel's blood went cold.
The room seemed to tilt.
His father had been the man behind the original crime.
The trust.
The missing child.
The financial network.
The years of lies.
All of it began with one murder.
But the final paragraph was worse.
Elena witnessed everything.
I believed removing her would protect the family.
I was wrong.
If she returns, give her everything.
The money.
The truth.
And the name of the man who helped me.
Daniel looked at the final line.
His father's handwriting became shaky.
That man is still alive.
Daniel stared.
Rachel whispered:
“Who?”
Daniel turned the letter over.
Nothing.
Then something fell from the envelope.
A small photograph.
It showed Daniel's father.
Marcus Vale's father.
And a third man.
Daniel recognized him immediately.
He had seen him dozens of times.
At family dinners.
At company meetings.
At his father's funeral.
The man standing beside Daniel in every important photograph of his childhood.
His uncle.
Daniel's hands went numb.
His uncle had not merely helped the scheme.
He had been there from the beginning.
At the same moment, Marcus was being transferred to another facility.
As the guards placed him into the vehicle, he looked toward the courthouse.
His phone was gone.
His money was frozen.
His empire was finished.
But he smiled.
Because there was one secret he had never told Daniel.
One piece of information even his uncle didn't know Marcus possessed.
A name.
The true name of the person who had financed everything.
Marcus whispered it to himself.
“Elena.”
Then he smiled again.
Because Elena wasn't Daniel's sister.
She was something far more dangerous.
May you like
She was the only person who could legally destroy the entire Carter fortune.
And Marcus knew exactly where she had been hiding for twenty-two years.
