Chapter 6 — The Night Marcus Came to My House

Chapter 6 — The Night Marcus Came to My House

Marcus came at 1:17 a.m.

Daniel knew he would.

That was why every light in the house was off.

The front door was unlocked.

The office door was open.

And on the desk sat the one thing Marcus had been searching for.

A black folder.

Marked:

CARTER FAMILY TRUST — ORIGINAL

It wasn't the original.

Daniel had made a copy.

The real document was already secured in three separate locations.

But Marcus didn't know that.

And tonight, Daniel intended to find out exactly what Marcus was willing to do to get it.

Daniel watched from the upstairs hallway.

He had positioned two cameras where Marcus couldn't see them.

One facing the office.

One facing the entrance.

The old security system was still disabled.

But Daniel had built a separate recording system.

Independent.

Encrypted.

Offline.

Nothing Marcus could access remotely.

Daniel checked the monitor.

1:16 a.m.

Then—

the front door moved.

Marcus stepped inside.

He wore black clothes.

Gloves.

A baseball cap.

No wedding ring.

He closed the door behind him.

Daniel watched him walk through the darkness.

Marcus didn't hesitate.

He knew exactly where the office was.

That told Daniel something.

He had been inside before.

More than once.

Marcus entered the office.

He turned on a small flashlight.

Then he saw the folder.

He stopped.

Daniel smiled faintly.

The trap had worked.

Marcus picked up the folder.

He opened it.

The first page showed the Carter family trust.

Marcus read it.

Then frowned.

He turned another page.

Then another.

His expression changed.

“This isn't it.”

Daniel watched from the monitor.

Marcus threw the folder onto the desk.

He pulled out his phone.

“She's lying.”

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

Marcus was calling someone.

A woman answered.

Daniel recognized the voice.

Claire.

Marcus whispered:

“The document is here.”

A pause.

“No.”

Another pause.

“You told me it was the original.”

Marcus looked around.

“Then Daniel moved it.”

Daniel leaned closer to the screen.

Claire said something.

Marcus replied:

“I don't care what you promised him.”

Silence.

Then:

“You need to tell him.”

Marcus froze.

“What?”

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

Tell who?

Marcus listened.

Then his face went pale.

“No.”

He ended the call.

Daniel stepped away from the monitor.

Something had changed.

Marcus hadn't expected that conversation.

And whoever Claire had been speaking to had frightened him.

Marcus opened the desk drawers.

Nothing.

He searched the bookshelves.

Nothing.

Then he pulled the carpet aside.

Nothing.

He opened the safe.

Empty.

He slammed it shut.

“Where is it?”

Daniel heard him whisper.

Then Marcus stopped.

He looked toward the ceiling.

For one terrifying second, Daniel thought Marcus had discovered him.

But Marcus walked toward the bedroom hallway.

Daniel quietly moved backward.

Marcus entered the children's room.

Daniel's heart stopped.

The beds were empty.

The children were at the hospital.

Marcus looked around.

He opened the closet.

Then the drawers.

He wasn't searching for the trust.

He was searching for something else.

Daniel realized what it was.

The children's passports.

He had seen them in Claire's financial records.

There had been an international travel reservation.

Three tickets.

One adult.

Two children.

Scheduled for the following week.

Marcus had planned to take Lily and Noah somewhere.

Daniel's blood ran cold.

Marcus opened the last drawer.

He found the passports.

He smiled.

“Got you.”

Daniel's hand tightened around his phone.

He needed Marcus to take them.

Not because he wanted the passports.

Because they were bait.

Daniel had already replaced them with marked copies.

The originals were secured at the hospital.

Marcus put the passports into his jacket.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

“Yeah?”

Daniel listened through the hidden microphone.

A man's voice.

Older.

Calm.

The same voice from the kitchen recording.

Marcus said:

“I'm inside.”

A pause.

“No, he isn't here.”

Another pause.

“I found the passports.”

Daniel's heart raced.

The older man said something.

Marcus replied:

“I'll bring them.”

Then:

“What about Claire?”

Marcus stopped.

His face changed.

“She's a problem now.”

Daniel leaned toward the monitor.

Marcus continued:

“She knows too much.”

The voice on the phone responded.

Marcus whispered:

“I know what you want.”

Then the line ended.

Marcus stood alone.

For several seconds, he didn't move.

Then he said:

“She was never supposed to survive this.”

Daniel froze.

Who?

Claire?

His father?

Someone else?

Marcus put the phone away.

Then he walked back toward the office.

Daniel knew the trap had to close soon.

He had enough.

The theft.

The passports.

The financial documents.

The admission that Claire was a liability.

But he needed something bigger.

Something that connected Marcus directly to the conspiracy.

Daniel had placed one final device beneath the desk.

A small audio recorder.

Marcus sat down.

He opened his laptop.

Daniel watched.

Marcus entered a password.

CARTER1984

Daniel recognized it.

His birth year.

Marcus had access to information only family members should know.

The laptop opened.

Folders appeared.

CLAIRE

DIANE

DANIEL

LILY

NOAH

Daniel's stomach tightened.

He clicked his own folder.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Medical records.

Travel schedules.

Bank statements.

Private photographs.

Even his children's school records.

Marcus had been monitoring him for years.

Then Marcus opened a document.

FINAL TRANSFER PLAN

Daniel read it.

The plan was simple.

Destroy Daniel's reputation.

Force a custody dispute.

Move his assets.

Have Claire file for divorce.

Declare Daniel financially irresponsible.

Transfer the remaining money to Crown Meridian.

Then disappear.

But there was one final step.

PHASE FIVE: PERMANENT REMOVAL

Daniel stared.

Marcus scrolled.

Daniel Carter must be unable to interfere with asset recovery.

The wording was deliberate.

Daniel's face became cold.

Marcus wasn't simply planning to ruin him.

He was planning to remove him.

Permanently.

Marcus suddenly looked toward the door.

Daniel stepped back into the shadows.

Marcus stood.

“Who's there?”

Silence.

He walked into the hallway.

Daniel held his breath.

Marcus moved closer.

Then stopped.

His phone rang.

He answered.

“What?”

The voice on the other end spoke.

Marcus's expression changed.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“No.”

Another pause.

“I told you.”

Marcus looked toward the office.

“He isn't supposed to know.”

Daniel's heart pounded.

Then Marcus said:

“Because if Daniel finds the trust, everything is over.”

Silence.

Marcus whispered:

“The original isn't with Claire.”

Daniel's eyes widened.

Marcus continued:

“It's with his uncle.”

There it was.

The connection Daniel needed.

His uncle.

The missing trust.

The entire scheme.

Marcus was confirming it.

Daniel reached for his phone.

He pressed one button.

The police were already listening.

Marcus suddenly smiled.

Daniel froze.

Marcus looked directly at the hidden camera.

“I know you're watching.”

Daniel's blood ran cold.

Marcus walked toward the camera.

He stared into the lens.

Then smiled.

“You should have stayed at the hospital.”

Daniel stepped out of the shadows.

“No.”

Marcus turned.

Daniel stood in the hallway.

“You should have stayed out of my house.”

Marcus smiled.

“I knew you'd be here.”

Daniel looked at the passports in his hand.

“You took the bait.”

Marcus laughed.

“You think this is a game?”

“No.”

Daniel held up his phone.

“It isn't.”

Marcus's smile disappeared.

Daniel pressed play.

The recording from the office began.

Marcus's own voice filled the hallway.

Daniel Carter must be unable to interfere with asset recovery.

Marcus went pale.

Daniel played another clip.

Marcus's voice:

She's a problem now.

Then another:

I found the passports.

Marcus looked toward the door.

“You recorded me.”

“Yes.”

“You can't use that.”

“Why?”

“You illegally recorded a private conversation.”

Daniel smiled.

“You broke into my home.”

Marcus froze.

Daniel continued:

“You stole documents.”

“You stole passports.”

“You accessed private files.”

“And you just admitted to a plan to permanently remove me.”

Marcus's expression hardened.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand enough.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“You think the police will save you?”

“No.”

Daniel looked toward the front door.

“They're already here.”

Marcus turned.

Red and blue lights flashed across the windows.

His face changed.

“You set me up.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Marcus ran.

He pushed through the kitchen.

Daniel didn't follow.

He didn't need to.

The front door opened.

Police officers entered.

Marcus stopped.

His eyes moved from one officer to another.

Then toward Daniel.

“This isn't over.”

Daniel looked at him.

“It is for tonight.”

Marcus was handcuffed.

As officers led him away, he shouted:

“You don't know who you're fighting!”

Daniel stood silently.

Marcus looked back.

“You think your uncle is the worst of it?”

Daniel froze.

Marcus smiled.

“Ask your wife what happened twenty-two years ago.”

Then he was gone.

At 3:06 a.m., Daniel returned to the office.

Rachel arrived minutes later.

She watched the recording.

“This is enough to open a major investigation.”

Daniel nodded.

“But Marcus mentioned something.”

“What?”

“Twenty-two years ago.”

Rachel looked at him.

“Your father's time.”

“Yes.”

“He knows something.”

Daniel opened the folder Marcus had left behind.

The laptop had been seized as evidence.

But Daniel had photographed the screen before the police took it.

He zoomed in on one document.

A photograph.

A woman.

A little girl.

The same photograph Claire had hidden.

The child was approximately six years old.

Daniel stared.

Rachel whispered:

“Who is she?”

“I don't know.”

Then Daniel noticed a name on the file.

ELENA VALE.

Marcus's sister.

Daniel looked at Rachel.

“She's supposed to be dead.”

Rachel froze.

“Are you sure?”

“Marcus told everyone she died twenty-two years ago.”

Daniel looked back at the photograph.

“But she didn't.”

At dawn, Daniel received another message.

This time from Claire.

Marcus has been arrested.

Daniel stared.

A second message followed.

Now they'll come for me.

Then:

I need to tell you the truth before they do.

Daniel didn't respond.

Another message arrived.

The girl in the photograph is my sister.

Daniel's breath stopped.

Then Claire sent one final sentence.

And your father was the reason she disappeared.

Daniel looked toward the rising sun.

The night had ended.

But the truth had only just begun.

Because Marcus had come to his house looking for the trust.

Instead, he had left behind the one thing Daniel needed most.

A trail.

A name.

A connection between his wife, his family, and a woman who had supposedly died twenty-two years ago.

May you like

And somewhere at the end of that trail was the answer to the question Daniel had been afraid to ask:

What had really happened to Elena Vale?
