Chapter 2: A Promise That Changed Everything

Chapter 2: A Promise That Changed Everything
The elderly woman introduced herself as Mrs. Grace.
She explained that years earlier, a fire had destroyed a community shelter, leaving many children without a safe place to live.
Since then, volunteers had done their best to help, but resources were running out.
Emma had become the unofficial leader of the children despite being only twelve years old.
"She makes sure everyone eats before she does," Mrs. Grace said.
Nathan looked at Emma.
The girl was carefully dividing sandwiches into tiny portions so everyone could have something.
She kept the smallest piece for herself.
Nathan felt a lump in his throat.
The next morning, he returned to the warehouse with boxes of food.
The children couldn't believe their eyes.
Then he came back the next day.
And the day after that.
Soon, Nathan started using part of his restaurant's profits to help them.
His customers noticed.
When they learned about the children, many wanted to help too.
Teachers donated books.
Doctors offered free checkups.
Local businesses provided clothing and supplies.
