CHAPTER I – THE DOOR THAT NEVER FORGAVE

“Stopped,” Patricia interrupted sharply.

The word hung in the air like a blade.

Michael Sanders froze. The wind behind him pushed gently against the open door, but he did not move forward. He had faced boardrooms, billion-dollar negotiations, and collapsing markets—but none of them had ever made him feel this small.

Patricia stepped back slightly, but she did not invite him in.

“You don’t get to rewrite the past just because your present is failing,” she said.

Michael clenched the wrinkled letter in his hand. It felt heavier now, as if the ink inside it had turned into judgment.

“I didn’t come here to rewrite anything,” he said quietly. “I came because I have nowhere else left.”

For a moment, something flickered in Patricia’s eyes—pain, buried deep, almost forgotten. But it disappeared quickly.

“My life didn’t stop when you walked away,” she said. “Yours just finally caught up with you.”
