CHAPTER III – THE THING MONEY CAN’T FIX

CHAPTER III – THE THING MONEY CAN’T FIX
Michael looked at her, truly looked at her for the first time in years.
She was not the woman he remembered from polished events and city lights. She was steadier now. Sharper. As if life had stripped everything unnecessary away and left only what was real.
“I don’t expect forgiveness,” he said.
Patricia finally turned back to him.
“Good,” she replied. “Because I don’t have any to give you.”
The words should have ended everything.
But Michael did not leave.
Instead, he slowly placed the letter on the small wooden table by the door.
“I was dying inside my success,” he said. “I just didn’t realize it until everything started falling apart.”
Patricia looked at the letter but did not touch it.
“You didn’t come here for help,” she said. “You came here because you’re afraid.”
Michael nodded once. Honest now.
“Yes.”
That honesty changed the air, even if only slightly.
Patricia studied him for a long moment. Then she stepped aside—not fully inviting him in, but no longer blocking the door.
“Sit down,” she said quietly. “And for once in your life… don’t talk like a man who owns the world.”
Michael Sanders hesitated… then stepped inside.
ENDING
Outside, the wind moved through the quiet yard, carrying away the years that could not be undone.
Inside, two people sat across from each other—not as lovers, not as enemies, but as fragments of a past that still had unfinished truth.

And for the first time in nine years, neither of them turned away.
THE END.
