CHAPTER 1 — THE WORD “MERCY”

CHAPTER 1 — THE WORD “MERCY”
The hospital room didn’t feel like a place where life had just begun.
It felt like something had ended.
Elena Carter lay still, her body exhausted from labor, her mind drifting in and out of pain and medication. The fluorescent lights above her buzzed softly, indifferent to everything human happening beneath them.
She heard voices before she understood words.
A nurse.
A doctor.
Then her husband, Adrian.
But his voice didn’t sound like hers anymore.
It sounded distant. Detached. Like it belonged to someone reading a script he didn’t agree with.
And then his mother entered.
Vivian Hale.
Perfect hair. Perfect posture. A Bible pressed to her chest like an accessory rather than a belief.
Elena tried to sit up.
“Where is my baby?” she whispered.
No one answered immediately.
That silence said everything wrong before words ever did.
The doctor finally spoke.
“There were complications.”
Elena’s chest tightened.
“No,” she said quickly. “No, she was fine. I heard her cry—”
Vivian stepped forward.
Her voice was soft.
Controlled.
“We did everything we could.”
Elena looked at Adrian.
He wasn’t looking at her.
Not once.
That was when the fear began.
Not loud fear.
The quiet kind.
The kind that spreads slowly through your bones when reality starts breaking in the wrong places.
Vivian opened her Bible.
“This is mercy,” she said gently. “God takes when He must.”
Elena’s breathing quickened.
“Where is my daughter?”
No one answered again.
And then—
the hospital door creaked open.
A small figure stood there.
Seven years old.
Quincy.
Adrian’s son from his first marriage.
He shouldn’t have been there.
Children weren’t allowed on this floor.
But he was.
And he was shaking.
He looked at Elena first.
Then at the adults.
Then he whispered:
“She’s not dead.”
The room froze.
Elena’s heart stopped beating properly.
“What did you say?” she whispered.
Quincy swallowed hard.
“I saw them,” he said. “They didn’t take her to the nursery.”
Vivian snapped instantly.
“That’s enough. Take him out—”
But Quincy stepped forward again.
His voice broke.
“She’s in the back. Near the bins. I saw the blue blanket move.”
Silence collapsed the room.
Elena didn’t think.
She moved.

She pulled the IV from her arm.
And she ran.
