CHAPTER 2 — THE BLUE BLANKET

CHAPTER 2 — THE BLUE BLANKET

Cold air hit Elena’s hospital gown as she stumbled through the emergency exit.

No one stopped her.

No one expected a woman who had just given birth to move like someone possessed.

Behind the hospital, the world changed.

Noise disappeared.

Light softened.

And the smell of antiseptic gave way to something sharper.

Metal.

Waste.

Reality.

Quincy followed behind her barefoot.

“I’m sorry,” he kept whispering. “I didn’t know what else to do.”

Elena didn’t respond.

She couldn’t.

Her eyes were locked on the rows of containers behind the medical wing.

Then she saw it.

A blue blanket.

Tucked beside a locked disposal cart.

Too clean for trash.

Too intentional for abandonment.

Her hands trembled as she approached.

“Please,” she whispered, though she didn’t know to whom.

She knelt.

Pulled the blanket back.

And gasped.

A baby.

Small. Warm. Barely breathing—but alive.

Elena let out a sound that wasn’t quite a scream and wasn’t quite prayer.

She grabbed her daughter immediately, pressing her close to her chest.

“I’ve got you,” she whispered. “I’ve got you, I’ve got you—”

Quincy stood frozen.

“I told you,” he said quietly.

Elena looked at him through tears.

“You saved her,” she whispered.

But Quincy wasn’t smiling.

He looked terrified.

Because he was remembering something else.

Something worse.

“She was supposed to be taken somewhere else,” he said.

Elena’s blood turned cold.

“Who said that?”

Quincy hesitated.

May you like

Then answered:

“Grandma.”
