Claire Bennett finally reached the center of the ballroom.
Without raising her voice, she gently pulled her trembling daughter, Sophie, behind her.
She looked directly into Victoria Langford's eyes and whispered seven words.
"You just touched the owner's only daughter tonight."
Victoria frowned.
"The owner?"
Claire didn't answer.
She simply held Sophie's hand tighter.
Around them, two hundred guests stood frozen beneath the crystal chandeliers.
The orchestra remained silent.
Victoria laughed.
"You expect everyone to believe that?"
Claire calmly reached into her evening clutch and pressed a single button on her phone.
Within seconds, the ballroom doors opened.
The hotel's general manager hurried inside with the head of security.
Both stopped in front of Claire.
"Good evening, Ms. Bennett."
