Chapter 12 – The Greatest Lie

Chapter 12 – The Greatest Lie
Rain continued to fall over Ashford Manor.
The fire had finally been contained, but smoke still drifted from the ruined west wing. Firefighters packed away their equipment while forensic teams searched through the blackened rubble, hoping that something—anything—had survived.
Daniel stood beside the ambulance.
A white sheet had been pulled over James Holloway's body.
For years, Daniel had believed James was the family's most loyal friend.
Then he became the prime suspect.
Now he was dead before he could finish a single sentence.
The truth had slipped away once again.
Detective Michael Cross crouched beside the spot where the mysterious woman had been standing.
The silver brooch still glistened against the wet pavement.
A lion with emerald eyes.
Cross carefully picked it up with gloved hands.
"It's expensive."
Daniel nodded.
"Custom-made."
Cross looked closer.
"No."
He turned it over.
"It's older than that."
Engraved on the back were three initials.
E.B.
"Eleanor Blackwell," Evelyn whispered.
Everyone turned toward her.
"You know that name?"
Evelyn stared at the brooch.
"I hoped I would never hear it again."
They gathered inside the surviving east library.
The mansion was scarred by smoke, but this room had escaped the flames.
Evelyn sat near the fireplace, the silver brooch resting on the table before her.
Daniel leaned forward.
"Who was Eleanor Blackwell?"
For a long moment, Evelyn remained silent.
Finally, she answered.
"She wasn't Sebastian's wife."
Daniel frowned.
"I never said she was."
"No."
Evelyn replied softly.
"Everyone assumed she was."
Cross opened his notebook.
"Then who was she?"
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"My husband's sister."
The room fell silent.
Daniel stared in disbelief.
"My grandfather had a sister?"
"A younger sister."
Evelyn nodded.
"Charles rarely spoke about her."
"Why?"
"Because the family erased her."
Martha frowned.
"I've worked here nearly forty years."
"I've never heard her name."
"Almost no one has."
Evelyn whispered.
"That was the point."
Daniel stood and walked toward the old family portraits lining the library walls.
There was Charles.
Richard.
Evelyn.
Even Daniel as a child.
But no Eleanor.
No Sebastian.
No trace of another branch of the family.
"They removed her."
Evelyn nodded.
"They removed all of them."
Cross looked up.
"All of them?"
"The Blackwells."
Daniel frowned.
"I thought Blackwell was a separate family."
"It wasn't."
Evelyn looked directly into his eyes.
"It was the Ashford family."
Silence filled the room.
Daniel struggled to understand.
"What do you mean?"
"Blackwell wasn't their original surname."
She took a slow breath.
"It was ours."
Daniel blinked.
"Our family..."
"...was once named Blackwell?"
"Yes."
Evelyn answered.
"When Charles built Ashford Industries..."
"He changed the family name."
"Why?"
"Because Blackwell had become associated with scandal."
Cross immediately wrote the note down.
"So Sebastian wasn't an outsider."
"No."
Evelyn's voice trembled.
"He was Charles's cousin."
Daniel felt as if the floor had shifted beneath him.
"So this wasn't two families fighting."
"No."
She whispered.
"It was one family destroying itself."
Martha quietly spoke.
"Then why hide it?"
Evelyn looked toward the fireplace.
"Because of the greatest lie Charles ever told."
She stood with Daniel's help and slowly approached an old oil painting hanging above the mantel.
It showed Charles receiving an award for founding Ashford Industries.
Beneath the frame was a brass plaque.
Founded by Charles Ashford – 1971
Evelyn shook her head.
"That isn't true."
Daniel frowned.
"What?"
"Charles didn't found the company."
Everyone stared.
Cross slowly lowered his pen.
"Who did?"
Evelyn touched the edge of the frame.
"Eleanor."
Daniel almost laughed in disbelief.
"The woman erased from every portrait?"
"Yes."
"She created the company."
"She designed the first manufacturing process."
"She secured the first investors."
"She even chose the original company name."
Cross whispered,
"And Charles took the credit."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"He believed no one would invest in a company led by a young woman."
"So he asked Eleanor to let him become the public face."
Daniel frowned.
"And she agreed?"
"At first."
Martha leaned closer.
"What changed?"
"Success."
Evelyn answered.
"The company became worth millions."
"Eleanor wanted her rightful ownership."
"Charles refused."
Cross nodded slowly.
"So the feud began."
"It became a war."
Evelyn replied.
"Eleanor left."
"She reclaimed the Blackwell name."
"She swore the Ashfords would one day lose everything they had stolen."
Daniel looked at the lion brooch again.
"So Sebastian..."
"Was her son."
Evelyn nodded.
"He grew up believing Charles had robbed his mother."
"And was he wrong?"
Daniel asked quietly.
The room fell silent.
Evelyn looked down.
"No."
For the first time since this nightmare began...
Daniel realized something devastating.
The conflict had not started with greed.
It had started with injustice.
Charles Ashford...
The man everyone remembered as honorable...
Had stolen his own sister's legacy.
Everything that followed—the forged wills, the lies, the betrayals, even the attempted murder of Evelyn—had grown from that original betrayal.
Cross broke the silence.
"That still doesn't explain the woman."
He held up the brooch.
"If Eleanor died years ago..."
"Who dropped this?"
Before Evelyn could answer, an officer entered the library.
"Detective."
Cross turned.
"What is it?"
"We identified the woman from the security footage outside the ambulance."
"You found her?"
"No."
"But facial recognition found a match."
Cross accepted the report.
His expression changed immediately.
Daniel noticed.
"What?"
The detective handed him the file.
Daniel looked at the photograph.
His heart nearly stopped.
The woman in the dark coat looked remarkably familiar.
Not because he had seen her tonight.
Because she resembled someone else.
Someone whose portrait hung in almost every room of Ashford Manor.
She had Charles Ashford's eyes.
His smile.
His unmistakable features.
According to the report, her name was:
Catherine Blackwell.
Age: 52.
Relationship:
Daughter of Eleanor Blackwell.
Daniel looked toward Evelyn.
"You told me Eleanor had only one child."
Evelyn's face turned pale.
"I believed she did."
Cross quietly turned to the final page of the report.
"There is one more detail."
Daniel read the line.
Then the color drained from his face.
Known aliases: Catherine Holloway.
James Holloway's wife.
The attorney had never betrayed the Ashfords for money alone.
He had married into the Blackwell bloodline.
And for nearly thirty years...
The Ashfords had unknowingly welcomed the architect of their destruction into every family celebration.
The greatest lie had never been hidden in a will.
May you like
It had been sitting at their dinner table.
