Chapter 14 – A Family Rebuilt

Chapter 14 – A Family Rebuilt
The phone screen went dark.
But the message remained burned into everyone's minds.
You failed me. Now I finish what we started.
For thirty years, the Ashford family believed the war had ended.
They were wrong.
The war had only been waiting.
Detective Michael Cross immediately moved toward Catherine.
"Where is he?"
Catherine didn't answer.
Her eyes remained fixed on the phone.
For the first time since entering the mansion, she looked small.
Not dangerous.
Not powerful.
Just afraid.
"He won't stop."
Cross's voice hardened.
"Who?"
Catherine looked toward the ruined west wing.
"The man who taught me hatred."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Sebastian."
Catherine nodded.
"My uncle."
The room became silent.
"The man everyone thought was dead."
Evelyn looked confused.
"But Sebastian disappeared twenty-five years ago."
Catherine laughed bitterly.
"He wanted you to believe that."
"Why?"
"Because dead men cannot be blamed."
She looked at the family portraits covering the hallway walls.
"He spent decades building his revenge."
Cross motioned toward the officers.
"Find him."
Every officer moved immediately.
But Catherine stopped them.
"You won't find him."
Cross turned.
"And why not?"
"Because he never hides where people look."
She swallowed.
"He hides where people trust."
Daniel felt a chill.
"What does that mean?"
Catherine looked directly at him.
"It means someone inside this mansion has been helping him."
Everyone exchanged nervous glances.
The servants.
The officers.
The remaining family members.
After everything they had uncovered, trust had become almost impossible.
Martha stepped forward.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
"I know this family."
She glanced around the damaged mansion.
"I know every person who has worked here."
She looked at Catherine.
"And I know one thing."
"What?"
"Sebastian doesn't need many people."
"Only one."
Daniel frowned.
"Who?"
Martha's face became serious.
"The person closest to the family."
A sudden sound came from the entrance hall.
A slow clap.
Everyone turned.
A man stood in the doorway.
Older.
Gray hair.
A familiar face.
For one terrifying second, Daniel thought he was seeing a ghost.
Then Catherine whispered:
"No..."
The man smiled.
Not warmly.
Not kindly.
Like someone who had waited years for this exact moment.
"Hello, Evelyn."
The old woman's face went pale.
Because she knew him.
Even after all these years.
Even after everyone believed him gone.
She knew him.
"Sebastian."
The room exploded into movement.
Officers raised their weapons.
Cross shouted,
"Don't move!"
But Sebastian only smiled.
"After thirty years..."
"You finally found the courage to point guns at me."
Daniel stared.
The man who had haunted his family's history looked nothing like the monster he imagined.
He looked ordinary.
That was the frightening part.
Monsters were supposed to look like monsters.
Sebastian looked like someone's grandfather.
Catherine stepped backward.
"You lied to me."
Sebastian looked at her.
"I gave you purpose."
"You gave me hatred."
"And hatred kept you alive."
Daniel stepped forward.
"You used everyone."
Sebastian looked amused.
"You think I created this family's destruction?"
He laughed softly.
"No."
"I simply showed them what they already were."
Evelyn gripped her cane.
"You destroyed my family."
Sebastian looked at her.
"No."
"Your family destroyed itself."
Daniel felt anger rising.
"You tried to kill my grandmother."
Sebastian's expression changed slightly.
"Did I?"
The question disturbed everyone.
Daniel stared.
"What?"
Sebastian smiled.
"Ask yourself."
"If I wanted Evelyn Ashford dead..."
"Why would she still be alive twenty years later?"
Nobody answered.
Because the question was uncomfortable.
Too logical.
Too dangerous.
Sebastian continued.
"James was desperate."
"Richard was weak."
"Catherine was angry."
"Everyone played their part."
"But I never touched Evelyn."
Cross stepped forward.
"We have evidence."
"Photographs."
"Records."
"Witnesses."
Sebastian nodded.
"And yet..."
"Every piece of evidence points in a different direction."
Daniel remembered.
The photograph showed the hand pushing Evelyn.
But not the face.
The letters contradicted each other.
The wills.
The recordings.
Everything had been designed to create confusion.
Sebastian looked at Daniel.
"You understand now."
"No."
Daniel replied.
"I understand that you manipulated everyone."
For the first time...
Sebastian's smile disappeared.
"Your grandfather built an empire on a lie."
"He stole from his sister."
"He erased a child."
"Your father inherited a poisoned legacy."
"And you..."
He looked at Daniel.
"You were the only innocent one."
Daniel remained silent.
Because part of him hated that Sebastian was right.
The Ashford family had committed terrible mistakes.
But that did not excuse murder.
Evelyn slowly moved her wheelchair forward.
"Sebastian."
He looked at her.
"I am sorry for what happened to Eleanor."
A flicker of emotion crossed his face.
"Don't say her name."
"Why?"
"Because you don't get to remember her now."
Evelyn's voice remained calm.
"I knew your mother."
Sebastian froze.
"What?"
"I knew Eleanor before everything happened."
"You..."
"I helped her when Charles abandoned her."
Everyone looked shocked.
Sebastian stared.
"That's impossible."
"No."
Evelyn shook her head.
"It's the truth."
She reached into the pocket of her dress and removed a small photograph.
It showed two young women.
Evelyn and Eleanor.
Standing together.
Smiling.
On the back was written:
Sisters by choice, even when blood failed us.
Sebastian stared at the picture.
His expression cracked.
"You kept this?"
"For thirty-eight years."
"Why?"
"Because Eleanor was not her mistakes."
"She was a person."
For the first time...
Sebastian looked uncertain.
The hatred he carried had been built on one story.
One version of the past.
And now another version stood before him.
Catherine quietly spoke.
"Uncle..."
Sebastian looked at her.
"Did you know?"
Silence.
A terrible silence.
"Did you know she loved them?"
Sebastian didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
Catherine's eyes filled with tears.
"All these years..."
"You told me they stole everything from us."
"You told me revenge was the only thing left."
Sebastian looked away.
Daniel stepped beside Catherine.
"You were used too."
She shook her head.
"I helped him."
"You were manipulated."
"I still chose."
Daniel looked at her.
"Then choose again."
The words surprised her.
"Choose what?"
"The truth."
For several moments, no one moved.
Then Catherine slowly lowered her head.
"I know where he keeps the evidence."
Everyone looked at her.
"What evidence?"
"The original documents."
"The recordings."
"The files proving everything."
Cross immediately stepped forward.
"Where?"
Catherine looked toward the mountains visible beyond the mansion windows.
"Blackwell Estate."
Daniel frowned.
"I thought it was abandoned."
"It was."
She paused.
"Until tonight."
Sebastian suddenly moved.
Fast.
Faster than anyone expected.
He reached inside his coat.
Officers reacted instantly.
A gun fell to the floor.
But Sebastian wasn't reaching for it.
He was reaching for a small wooden box.
He held it tightly.
Daniel recognized the symbol carved into the lid.
The Ashford crest.
"What is that?"
Sebastian smiled sadly.
"The beginning."
Before anyone could take it, Sebastian pressed a hidden button on the side.
The box opened.
Inside was not money.
Not documents.
Only one object.
A tiny bracelet.
A child's bracelet.
Evelyn's face changed.
Because she recognized it.
"My God..."
Daniel looked at her.
"What?"
Her voice trembled.
"This belonged to..."
She stopped.
She couldn't finish.
Sebastian whispered:
"The child Charles Ashford abandoned."
Everyone froze.
Daniel stared.
"What child?"
Sebastian looked directly at him.
"The child your grandfather erased."
He lifted the bracelet.
On the inside was engraved one name.
A name nobody expected.
A name that would destroy the last remaining illusion of the Ashford family.
Daniel Ashford.
The room went silent.
Daniel stepped backward.
"No."
Sebastian smiled.
"The greatest secret was never Catherine."
May you like
"It was you."
