Chapter 6 – The Maid's Promise

Chapter 6 – The Maid's Promise
The screams from the ballroom echoed through the hidden passage.
Daniel didn't wait for anyone.
He sprinted up the narrow stone corridor, Detective Michael Cross and two officers close behind.
When they burst through the steel door concealed behind the portrait, chaos had consumed Ashford Manor.
Guests were crouching behind overturned tables.
Crystal glasses shattered across the marble floor.
A grand piano stood abandoned in the center of the ballroom.
But there was no gunman.
Only panic.
"Everyone stay where you are!" Cross shouted.
The frightened crowd slowly settled.
An elderly senator pointed toward the entrance.
"They're gone..."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"Three men dressed as catering staff."
"They threw smoke bombs."
"They weren't trying to kill anyone."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"They were looking for something."
An officer hurried across the ballroom carrying a black duffel bag.
"We found this near the front door."
Cross carefully unzipped it.
Inside were bolt cutters.
A crowbar.
A portable hard drive.
And an empty evidence bag.
His expression darkened.
"The videotape."
Daniel immediately understood.
"The security tape."
"It's gone."
Someone had infiltrated the gala not to attack the guests...
But to steal the only recording that could expose the truth.
Victoria stood near the staircase, pretending to comfort several frightened women.
Daniel walked straight toward her.
"You knew."
She looked offended.
"Excuse me?"
"You knew someone was coming."
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
Daniel leaned closer.
"My grandmother returns after twenty years."
"The original will appears."
"A hidden room is discovered."
"And suddenly armed thieves arrive to steal one piece of evidence."
He held her gaze.
"Too many coincidences."
Victoria forced a smile.
"Be careful, Daniel."
"Grief makes people suspicious."
Before Daniel could answer, Martha gently touched his arm.
"Please."
He turned.
She looked pale.
"There is something I should have told you years ago."
Daniel frowned.
"What?"
She glanced toward Evelyn.
The old matriarch slowly nodded.
"It's time."
Daniel led Martha into the old library adjoining the ballroom.
Only Detective Cross and Evelyn followed.
Outside, officers secured the mansion while frightened guests quietly left under police escort.
The library door closed.
For the first time that evening...
They were alone.
Martha remained standing.
Her hands trembled slightly.
"I've carried this secret for twenty years."
Daniel spoke softly.
"You don't have to protect anyone anymore."
"I know."
She smiled sadly.
"But promises don't disappear just because they're painful."
Evelyn reached into her pocket and removed a faded handkerchief.
She unfolded it carefully.
Inside lay a tiny silver button.
Daniel frowned.
"I've seen that before."
"You have."
Evelyn answered.
"It belonged to the coat you wore when you were twelve."
His eyes widened.
"My blue winter coat."
"You lost this button the night I disappeared."
Martha took a deep breath.
"That night..."
"You weren't asleep."
Daniel stared at her.
"What?"
"You saw something."
The room became silent.
Daniel searched his memory.
Fragments.
Broken images.
Rain against the windows.
His father shouting.
A loud crash.
Someone crying.
Nothing more.
"I don't remember."
"You were never allowed to."
Martha whispered.
She walked toward the fireplace.
"I found you hiding under this very desk."
Daniel frowned.
"I was here?"
"You were terrified."
"You kept repeating the same sentence."
"What sentence?"
Martha closed her eyes.
"Don't let them hurt Grandma."
A sharp pain pulsed through Daniel's head.
For a split second...
A memory flashed.
The marble staircase.
His grandmother reaching for the railing.
A man in a gray suit.
His father's angry voice.
Then darkness.
Daniel grabbed the edge of the desk.
"I..."
"My head..."
Cross stepped forward.
"Easy."
Martha continued gently.
"You had seen too much."
"Mrs. Ashford realized that before she lost consciousness."
"She grabbed my hand."
"What did she say?"
Martha looked directly at him.
"Her exact words were..."
'If they can't silence me... they'll silence Daniel.'
Daniel's breathing became uneven.
"No..."
"She made me promise."
Martha continued.
"No matter what happened..."
"I had to protect you."
"Even if it meant letting you hate me."
Cross frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Martha smiled sadly.
"You thought I was only a servant."
"I never corrected you."
"Because if anyone believed I was important to the Ashford family..."
"I would have become a target too."
Daniel slowly sat down.
"So every birthday..."
"Every Christmas..."
"You stayed."
Martha nodded.
"I watched you grow."
"I watched you become lonely."
"I watched you believe your grandmother abandoned you."
Tears filled her eyes.
"And every day..."
"I wanted to tell you the truth."
Evelyn quietly spoke.
"I forbade her."
Daniel looked at her.
"You?"
"I couldn't risk losing both of you."
"If they learned Martha still knew where I was..."
"They would have killed her."
Cross crossed his arms.
"Who exactly are 'they'?"
Evelyn's expression became distant.
"I never knew their names."
"But I knew one thing."
"They weren't afraid of the law."
"They controlled people."
"Money."
"Power."
"They made witnesses disappear."
Daniel remembered the hidden photograph.
Sebastian Blackwell.
The gray suit.
The lion-shaped cufflinks.
"Blackwell."
Evelyn nodded once.
"He wasn't working alone."
Martha opened the worn leather bag she had carried for years.
"This is why I never left."
She removed a small wooden box wrapped in faded cloth.
Daniel immediately recognized it.
"My childhood memory box."
"I thought it was lost."
"I kept it."
She handed it to him.
"I promised your grandmother that if the day ever came..."
"...I would return it to you."
Daniel carefully opened the lid.
Inside were dozens of small treasures.
A toy soldier.
A broken compass.
His first school ribbon.
Drawings he had made as a child.
Then...
At the very bottom...
A folded piece of paper.
Different from everything else.
His own handwriting.
Large.
Uneven.
Clearly written by a frightened twelve-year-old.
He unfolded it.
Only one sentence appeared.
The man with the lion touched Grandma.
The room fell silent.
Daniel didn't remember writing it.
But somehow...
His younger self had recorded the truth before his memory faded.
Cross carefully examined the note.
"This could become evidence."
Daniel nodded slowly.
Then frowned.
"Wait."
He turned the paper over.
There was something else.
A crude drawing.
A lion-shaped cufflink.
And beneath it...
Three letters.
J.H.
Everyone looked toward James Holloway.
The family attorney.
Still waiting in the ballroom.
Cross immediately reached for his radio.
"Find James Holloway."
An officer answered almost instantly.
"Detective..."
"...he's gone."
"What?"
"His briefcase is still here."
"But Mr. Holloway disappeared about ten minutes ago."
Daniel's heart sank.
The trusted family lawyer had vanished...
Just moments after the videotape was stolen.
And for the first time, Daniel began to wonder whether the man who had appeared to help them...
May you like
Had actually been leading them exactly where someone wanted them to go.
