Chapter 10 — The Betrayal Inside My Family

Chapter 10 — The Betrayal Inside My Family

Charlotte knew someone inside her family had betrayed her.

She just didn't know who.

The photograph of Vanessa's daughter was still in her hand.

Eight years old.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

Standing beside Margaret Cross as if the woman weren't responsible for destroying an entire family.

Charlotte stared at the image.

Vanessa stood across from her, trembling.

“Her name is Sophie.”

Charlotte looked up.

“Sophie.”

“My daughter.”

“I'll bring her back.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don't understand Margaret.”

“I understand enough.”

“No.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“She doesn't threaten people.”

Charlotte frowned.

“What does she do?”

“She makes them believe they have no choice.”

The words stayed with Charlotte.

Because that was exactly how Margaret had controlled everyone.

Samuel.

Jonathan.

Richard.

Vanessa.

Even Charlotte's mother.

But there was one person Margaret had not mentioned.

The person Eleanor had appointed as Charlotte's protector.

The person hidden inside the second trust.

Charlotte turned toward Daniel.

“You said the trust named a protector.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“I didn't say that.”

“You knew.”

He looked away.

“Daniel.”

He sighed.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

Charlotte stared.

“You don't know?”

“Your mother kept that information separate.”

“Why?”

“Because if Margaret knew who the protector was, she would kill them.”

Charlotte looked at the photograph.

“Then how do we find out?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Your mother left a condition.”

“What condition?”

“The protector can reveal themselves only after you reject the original trust.”

Charlotte froze.

“I already did.”

“Yes.”

“So where are they?”

Daniel looked toward the door.

“Maybe they've already found you.”

The lights went out.

Charlotte froze.

Vanessa grabbed her arm.

“What happened?”

Daniel reached for his phone.

“No signal.”

A second later, the emergency lights came on.

Red.

Then the archive door opened.

A man stood there.

Charlotte raised the flashlight.

“Who are you?”

The man stepped forward.

Charlotte recognized him.

Her heart stopped.

“Uncle David?”

David Vale smiled.

He had been missing for nineteen years.

Everyone believed he had died in a boating accident.

Charlotte remembered seeing his photograph as a child.

Her mother had never talked about him.

Jonathan had called him dangerous.

Samuel had called him a traitor.

But there he stood.

Alive.

Older.

Calmer.

Holding a small black case.

David looked at Charlotte.

“You have your mother's eyes.”

Charlotte couldn't speak.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“He's the protector.”

David nodded.

“Yes.”

Charlotte stared at him.

“My mother chose you?”

“Your mother trusted me.”

“Why didn't you ever come back?”

“Because I couldn't.”

“Couldn't?”

David's expression hardened.

“Margaret spent nineteen years looking for me.”

Charlotte stepped closer.

“Why?”

“Because I know what really happened to your father.”

David opened the black case.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Audio recordings.

And one passport.

Charlotte picked it up.

The name was not David Vale.

It was Daniel Mercer.

She looked at Daniel.

He went completely still.

Charlotte's stomach dropped.

“What is this?”

David smiled bitterly.

“That's your first betrayal.”

Charlotte looked at Daniel.

“Who are you?”

Daniel didn't answer.

David did.

“He isn't Daniel Mercer.”

Charlotte's heart pounded.

“He is Samuel Cross.”

Silence.

Vanessa gasped.

Charlotte slowly turned toward the man who had protected her for years.

Daniel's face was pale.

“Charlotte…”

She stepped backward.

“No.”

“Listen to me.”

“You lied to me.”

“I was protecting you.”

“You lied about your name.”

“I had to.”

“You told me Samuel was dangerous.”

“He is.”

David shook his head.

“Not exactly.”

Charlotte looked between them.

“What is happening?”

David closed the case.

“Daniel is Samuel's son.”

Charlotte stared.

“And Margaret's grandson.”

The room seemed to spin.

Charlotte looked at Daniel.

“Is that true?”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

Her voice became cold.

“How long have you known who you were?”

“All my life.”

“And you came into my life pretending to protect me.”

“I was protecting you.”

“Or watching me?”

Daniel's eyes filled with pain.

“Both.”

Charlotte's face hardened.

“That is not protection.”

David stepped between them.

“Charlotte, you need to hear the whole story.”

“I don't want another story.”

“You deserve the truth.”

“I've had enough truth for one lifetime.”

David opened the case again.

“Then look.”

He handed her a photograph.

It showed Eleanor.

Standing beside Daniel.

Charlotte stared.

“When was this?”

“Twenty years ago.”

Daniel spoke quietly.

“She found me after my father tried to kill me.”

Charlotte looked at him.

“Samuel tried to kill his own son?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I refused to help him.”

“With what?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Margaret.”

Charlotte's anger faltered.

Daniel continued.

“I discovered what they were doing.”

“What?”

“Your family wasn't simply hiding money.”

He looked at her.

“They were trafficking identities.”

Charlotte frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“People who disappeared could be legally replaced.”

“Replaced?”

“New identities. New companies. New ownership.”

David nodded.

“They created people who didn't exist.”

Charlotte's stomach tightened.

“And people who did exist…”

“…could be erased,” Daniel finished.

Charlotte looked at the photograph of her mother.

“Like me.”

“Yes.”

The betrayal suddenly made sense.

Charlotte's entire identity had been manipulated.

Her father's death.

Her mother's death.

The hidden trust.

The secret account.

The false records.

Everything had been connected.

But one question remained.

“Why did Margaret need me alive?”

David answered.

“Because you're the only person who can legally activate the second trust.”

“And if I die?”

“The trust becomes frozen.”

“Who controls it then?”

“No one.”

Charlotte stared.

“So Margaret wants me alive.”

“Yes.”

“But she also wants me discredited.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel answered.

“So when you transfer the trust to her, nobody can challenge it.”

Charlotte understood.

Margaret didn't need to kill her.

She needed Charlotte to surrender willingly.

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“She did the same thing to me.”

Charlotte looked at her.

“What?”

“Years ago.”

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“She convinced me my daughter was sick.”

Charlotte frowned.

“What?”

“She forged medical records.”

“Why?”

“To make me desperate.”

“And then?”

“She offered to pay for treatment.”

Vanessa began crying.

“I signed documents without reading them.”

“What documents?”

“Custody papers.”

Charlotte's blood ran cold.

“Margaret took legal control of Sophie.”

“Yes.”

“So she didn't kidnap her.”

“No.”

“She made you give her away.”

Vanessa nodded.

“She told me Sophie would be safe.”

Charlotte looked at the photograph.

“She never intended to return her.”

“No.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“And that's why Margaret is dangerous.”

Charlotte looked at him.

“Because she doesn't need violence.”

Daniel shook his head.

“She uses paperwork.”

Charlotte suddenly remembered something.

The account.

The forged signature.

The fraudulent transfers.

The accusation against her.

Everything was paperwork.

She looked at David.

“You said you know what happened to my father.”

“Yes.”

“Tell me.”

David hesitated.

“Thomas discovered the identity network.”

Charlotte's heart sank.

“He found the people Margaret had erased.”

“Yes.”

“He was going to expose her.”

“Yes.”

“And she killed him.”

David nodded.

“But not directly.”

Charlotte frowned.

“Then who?”

David looked at Daniel.

“Jonathan.”

Charlotte froze.

“My biological father?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Margaret gave him a choice.”

“What choice?”

“Kill Thomas…”

David paused.

“…or lose you.”

Charlotte's face went white.

“No.”

Jonathan had killed Thomas to protect her.

Her entire childhood had been built on a lie.

She turned toward Daniel.

“Did you know?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.”

Charlotte slapped him.

The sound echoed through the archive.

Daniel didn't move.

Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You knew who my father was.”

“Yes.”

“You knew who killed Thomas.”

“Yes.”

“You knew my mother was murdered.”

“Yes.”

“And you still stood beside me.”

Daniel's voice broke.

“Because your mother made me promise.”

“What promise?”

“To keep you alive.”

Charlotte stared at him.

“Not happy.”

“Not rich.”

“Not powerful.”

“Alive.”

Daniel nodded.

“That was all she asked.”

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Charlotte heard footsteps.

Everyone turned.

A woman appeared at the end of the corridor.

Charlotte recognized her immediately.

Margaret.

She walked slowly toward them.

No guards.

No weapon.

Only a black coat and an expression of complete confidence.

Charlotte stepped forward.

“You came.”

Margaret smiled.

“You found my family.”

Charlotte frowned.

“Your family?”

Margaret looked at Daniel.

“My grandson.”

Then David.

“My former partner.”

Then Vanessa.

“My former employee.”

Finally, she looked at Charlotte.

“And the child who ruined everything.”

Charlotte's jaw tightened.

“You murdered my mother.”

“Yes.”

The admission was so calm that Charlotte almost couldn't process it.

“You killed Thomas.”

“I arranged it.”

“You destroyed Vanessa.”

“She was weak.”

“You used Jonathan.”

“He was useful.”

Charlotte stepped closer.

“You destroyed thousands of people.”

Margaret smiled.

“I built an empire.”

“On stolen lives.”

“Every empire is built on something.”

Charlotte shook her head.

“Not mine.”

Margaret laughed.

“You still think you can separate yourself from your family.”

“I already have.”

“No.”

Margaret's smile disappeared.

“You are a Vale.”

Charlotte lifted the trust document.

“Not anymore.”

Margaret's expression changed.

“What did you do?”

“I rejected the stolen assets.”

“You can't.”

“I already did.”

“You have no idea what you've triggered.”

Charlotte looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

“The second trust activated.”

Margaret's face went pale.

“You…”

Charlotte interrupted.

“And I named the victims as beneficiaries.”

Silence.

Margaret stared at her.

“You destroyed the Vale fortune.”

Charlotte nodded.

“Yes.”

Margaret laughed.

Then laughed again.

“You think money was the point?”

Charlotte froze.

Margaret stepped closer.

“The money was never the point.”

“What was?”

Margaret whispered:

“Control.”

Margaret reached into her coat.

Daniel immediately stepped in front of Charlotte.

Margaret smiled.

“I didn't come to hurt her.”

She pulled out a document.

“I came to show her what her mother really did.”

Charlotte took it.

It was a signed agreement.

Eleanor's signature.

Jonathan's signature.

Thomas's signature.

And one more.

Charlotte's.

She stared.

“My signature?”

Margaret nodded.

“Impossible.”

“You were six years old.”

“I couldn't sign this.”

“You didn't.”

Charlotte looked at the date.

Twenty years ago.

The agreement transferred control of several Solmere properties.

To Margaret.

Charlotte's name appeared as beneficiary.

Her signature had been forged.

But below it was another clause.

In the event of dispute, the beneficiary shall be deemed complicit.

Charlotte stared.

Margaret smiled.

“You were designed to take the blame.”

Charlotte felt the room close around her.

The entire conspiracy had been waiting for this moment.

Margaret hadn't wanted Charlotte dead.

She had wanted Charlotte guilty.

And now the evidence existed.

Suddenly, David moved.

He grabbed the document from Charlotte.

“It's fake.”

Margaret smiled.

“Prove it.”

David looked at the signature.

Then at Charlotte.

“I can.”

Margaret's expression changed.

David pulled another document from his case.

“The original.”

Margaret's face went white.

David placed it on the table.

Charlotte looked down.

The clause was different.

Someone had altered the contract.

The original said:

In the event of dispute, the beneficiary shall be protected from liability for actions taken before legal majority.

Charlotte looked at Margaret.

“You changed it.”

Margaret said nothing.

“You forged the clause.”

Margaret's silence was answer enough.

Charlotte turned toward Daniel.

“Can this be authenticated?”

“Yes.”

“Then it's over.”

Margaret smiled.

“No.”

She looked toward the hallway.

Then said:

“Because you still haven't found Sophie.”

Vanessa gasped.

Margaret turned.

“Would you like to know where she is?”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Please.”

Margaret smiled.

“Ask Charlotte.”

Charlotte froze.

“What?”

Margaret looked at her.

“Your mother didn't bury one secret.”

“She buried two.”

Charlotte's blood ran cold.

“What second secret?”

Margaret's smile returned.

“Your father had another child.”

Silence.

Jonathan's secret child.

Charlotte stared.

“Who?”

Margaret turned toward Vanessa.

“Sophie.”

Vanessa's face collapsed.

“No.”

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.”

Charlotte looked at Vanessa.

Then at the photograph.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

A face that suddenly seemed familiar.

Charlotte whispered:

“She's a Vale.”

Margaret smiled.

“And that is why everyone wants her.”

The lights went out.

When they returned, Margaret was gone.

So was David.

Charlotte spun around.

“Where did he go?”

Daniel looked toward the exit.

“Who?”

“David.”

He was gone.

The black case remained on the table.

Charlotte opened it.

Inside was one final photograph.

Sophie.

Standing beside a man.

Charlotte recognized him.

Jonathan.

Her biological father.

On the back was a handwritten message.

Your mother wasn't protecting you from Margaret.

She was protecting Margaret from you.

Charlotte stared at the words.

Her hands began to shake.

Because suddenly, the entire story had changed.

Maybe Eleanor had not simply been a victim.

Maybe she had been protecting a secret that could destroy Margaret.

Maybe Charlotte's inheritance wasn't merely money.

Maybe it was something Margaret had feared since the day Charlotte was born.

And if Sophie really was Charlotte's half-sister…

then the two women might be the only people capable of exposing the entire empire.

Charlotte looked at Daniel.

“Where is my father?”

Daniel's face was grim.

“I don't know.”

“And David?”

“I don't know.”

“And Sophie?”

Silence.

Charlotte picked up the photograph.

“Then we find all three.”

Outside, the city lights burned beneath the night sky.

The Vale Empire was collapsing.

Margaret's control was weakening.

The truth was finally emerging.

But Charlotte had just discovered the most dangerous betrayal of all.

The people she thought were protecting her…

had been hiding the truth about her family.

And one question now haunted her more than anything else:

What exactly had Eleanor been protecting Margaret from?

Because whatever the answer was…

May you like

it had something to do with Charlotte.

And Margaret had spent twenty-six years trying to make sure Charlotte never found out.
