Chapter 6 — The Woman Vanessa Tried to Destroy

Chapter 6 — The Woman Vanessa Tried to Destroy
Charlotte arrived at the old Vale estate at 11:43 p.m.
She did not bring the original trust.
She brought a copy.
The real document remained locked inside the Founder’s Office.
She had learned one thing from the people who had lied to her for years:
Never hand anyone the thing they demanded before understanding why they wanted it.
The estate stood at the edge of the city, surrounded by dead trees and an iron fence.
Her family had abandoned it decades ago.
At least, that was what Charlotte had been told.
She parked outside the gates.
The house was dark.
Every window looked black.
Charlotte stepped out of the car.
The wind was cold.
She reached into her coat and touched the small recorder containing her father's voice.
Then she heard footsteps.
She turned.
Daniel emerged from the darkness.
Charlotte's expression hardened.
“I told you not to follow me.”
“You shouldn't be here.”
“That's becoming your favorite sentence.”
“Charlotte.”
“You knew Samuel was alive.”
Daniel stopped.
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Almost twenty years.”
Charlotte stared at him.
“And you never told me.”
“I promised your mother.”
“You always hide behind that promise.”
Daniel looked exhausted.
“Because that promise kept you alive.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“I don't want protection anymore.”
“You don't understand what Samuel is capable of.”
“Then tell me.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“He destroyed the first woman who tried to expose him.”
“Who?”
Daniel looked toward the house.
“Her name was Elena.”
Charlotte frowned.
“Who was Elena?”
“The woman Vanessa tried to destroy.”
Charlotte's eyes narrowed.
“Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
“What does Vanessa have to do with Samuel?”
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at the house.
“She wasn't acting alone.”
Inside the estate, every room smelled of dust and old wood.
Charlotte walked slowly.
The furniture remained exactly where it had been decades earlier.
Family portraits covered the walls.
Her great-grandfather.
Her grandparents.
Her mother as a young woman.
Her father.
Jonathan.
And Vanessa.
Charlotte stopped.
“Why is Vanessa here?”
Daniel looked at the portrait.
“Because your mother trusted her.”
Charlotte turned.
“Vanessa?”
“Before Richard.”
“Before the hotel.”
“Before everything.”
Charlotte stared at the photograph.
Vanessa looked younger.
Almost innocent.
“What happened?”
Daniel walked toward another room.
“Your mother hired her.”
“For what?”
“To investigate the family trust.”
Charlotte followed.
“Then why did Vanessa attack me?”
“Because she changed sides.”
“Why?”
“Money.”
Charlotte wasn't satisfied.
“That's too simple.”
Daniel looked at her.
“It wasn't just money.”
They entered a study.
On the desk lay an old file.
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a photograph of a woman.
She was young.
Dark-haired.
Serious.
Beautiful.
Charlotte picked it up.
“Who is she?”
“Elena Morgan.”
“What happened to her?”
“Vanessa destroyed her life.”
“How?”
Daniel closed the file.
“By making everyone believe Elena was a thief.”
Charlotte frowned.
“Was she?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because Elena found something.”
“What?”
“The original trust records.”
Charlotte's stomach tightened.
“Just like my father.”
“Yes.”
“Did she know Samuel?”
Daniel nodded.
“She was one of the few people who did.”
Charlotte turned through the file.
There were bank statements.
Court documents.
Employment records.
Newspaper articles.
One headline stood out.
HOTEL ACCOUNTANT ACCUSED OF EMBEZZLING $4.2 MILLION
Below it was Elena's photograph.
Charlotte stared.
“She was arrested.”
“Yes.”
“Convicted?”
“No.”
“Then what happened?”
“She disappeared before the trial.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Because she knew she was going to die.”
Charlotte felt cold.
“Where is she now?”
“I don't know.”
“You said she disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“Then how do you know she's alive?”
Daniel didn't answer.
Charlotte looked at him.
“Daniel.”
He sighed.
“She contacted your mother.”
“When?”
“Three days before Eleanor died.”
Charlotte's pulse quickened.
“What did she say?”
“She said she had proof.”
“Proof of what?”
“That Samuel was using Vanessa.”
Charlotte looked at the file.
“Vanessa wasn't working for Samuel.”
“She was.”
“Why?”
“To destroy Elena.”
Charlotte stared at the photograph again.
“What did Vanessa do?”
Daniel opened another folder.
Inside were copies of emails.
Anonymous complaints.
False financial reports.
Edited photographs.
Forged signatures.
Charlotte's eyes widened.
“She manufactured the evidence.”
“Yes.”
“She framed Elena.”
“Yes.”
“Why would Vanessa do that?”
“Because Samuel promised her something.”
“What?”
“The Vale inheritance.”
Charlotte's jaw tightened.
“So Vanessa helped destroy Elena for money.”
“Yes.”
“And then she came after me.”
Daniel nodded.
“Because you became the last obstacle.”
Charlotte continued reading.
Then she found something unexpected.
A photograph.
Vanessa standing beside Eleanor.
Both women were smiling.
On the back was a date.
September 8, 2011.
Charlotte looked at Daniel.
“My mother knew.”
“Yes.”
“She knew Vanessa was corrupt.”
“Not then.”
“When did she find out?”
“After Elena disappeared.”
Charlotte stared at the photograph.
“Then why didn't she fire Vanessa?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Because Vanessa had already become useful.”
“Useful?”
“She was feeding Eleanor information.”
“About Samuel?”
“Yes.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“This is insane.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Your family was built on secrets.”
“And everyone kept adding more.”
“Yes.”
Charlotte closed the file.
“Where is Vanessa now?”
“At the Solmere.”
“Then we're going back.”
Daniel grabbed her arm.
“No.”
Charlotte pulled away.
“Why?”
“Because she knows you're looking.”
“Good.”
“She may have Elena.”
Charlotte stopped.
“What?”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Three hours ago, Vanessa contacted someone.”
“Who?”
“An unknown number.”
“And?”
“The call was traced to an abandoned property.”
“Whose property?”
“Elena Morgan's.”
Charlotte's eyes widened.
“Then she's alive.”
“Maybe.”
Charlotte looked at the file.
Then at Daniel.
“Take me there.”
The abandoned house stood twelve miles outside the city.
The windows were boarded.
The grass had grown waist-high.
Daniel parked without headlights.
Charlotte stepped out.
The front door was unlocked.
Inside, the air smelled of damp wood.
“Hello?”
No answer.
Charlotte moved through the hallway.
Then she heard something.
A faint cough.
She followed the sound.
A basement door.
She opened it.
A woman sat on the floor.
Her wrists were tied.
Her face was bruised.
Her hair was streaked with gray.
Charlotte froze.
“Elena?”
The woman looked up.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Elena whispered:
“Eleanor's daughter.”
Charlotte hurried toward her.
“Who did this?”
Elena laughed bitterly.
“You know.”
“Vanessa?”
Elena nodded.
Charlotte began cutting the restraints.
“Why?”
“Because I found the ledger.”
“What ledger?”
“The one that proves everything.”
Daniel looked around.
“Where is it?”
Elena stared at him.
“You're still alive.”
Daniel nodded.
“Barely.”
Elena looked at Charlotte.
“Your mother was right.”
“About what?”
“Daniel protected you.”
Charlotte stopped.
“Then why did he lie?”
“Because he had to.”
Elena coughed.
“Samuel had people everywhere.”
Charlotte helped her stand.
“What is the ledger?”
Elena looked toward the ceiling.
“The money.”
“What money?”
“The money your family stole before your mother was born.”
Charlotte stared.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“It does.”
Elena continued.
“The Solmere fortune wasn't built from nothing.”
“What was it built from?”
“Your great-grandfather stole it.”
Charlotte felt sick.
“From whom?”
“Thousands of investors.”
Daniel looked at Elena.
“You're sure?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did Eleanor continue running Solmere?”
Elena looked at Charlotte.
“Because she was trying to return it.”
Charlotte's eyes widened.
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
“She was secretly paying people back?”
Elena nodded.
“Millions every year.”
Charlotte suddenly remembered her mother's strange financial transfers.
The accounts Daniel had mentioned.
The unexplained payments.
“She wasn't stealing.”
“No.”
“She was returning the money.”
“Yes.”
Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.
“And Samuel?”
Elena's expression hardened.
“He wanted the money to remain hidden.”
“Why?”
“Because if the truth became public, the entire Vale empire would collapse.”
Charlotte looked around.
“Then why attack me?”
Elena gave a bitter smile.
“Because you're the last person who can expose it.”
A car engine sounded outside.
Daniel looked toward the window.
“We have to go.”
Charlotte grabbed Elena's arm.
“Can she walk?”
“Barely.”
The front door slammed open.
Vanessa's voice echoed through the house.
“Charlotte!”
Charlotte froze.
Vanessa stepped inside.
She was alone.
Or appeared to be.
“You should have stayed at the hotel.”
Charlotte stepped forward.
“You kidnapped Elena.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
Elena shouted:
“She did!”
Vanessa looked at her.
“You're lying.”
“You tried to kill me.”
“I never touched you.”
“You ordered them.”
Charlotte stared at Vanessa.
“Who?”
Vanessa looked at her.
“Your uncle.”
“Jonathan?”
“Yes.”
Charlotte's heart pounded.
“Why?”
“Because Elena knew too much.”
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“I was trying to scare her.”
“You locked her in a basement.”
“I was trying to protect myself.”
“From whom?”
Vanessa looked toward the door.
“Samuel.”
Silence.
Charlotte stared.
“You're afraid of him.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you work for him?”
“I didn't know who he was.”
Elena laughed.
“You knew.”
Vanessa's face twisted.
“I was desperate.”
“For money?”
“For my life.”
Charlotte stepped closer.
“What did Samuel threaten?”
Vanessa began crying.
“My daughter.”
Charlotte froze.
“You have a daughter?”
“Yes.”
“Where is she?”
“I don't know.”
Vanessa covered her face.
“He took her.”
Elena stared at her.
“He took your daughter?”
“Yes.”
“And you still helped him?”
“What was I supposed to do?”
“Tell the police.”
Vanessa laughed through her tears.
“I did.”
Charlotte frowned.
“What happened?”
“They arrested the detective.”
Daniel's face darkened.
“Samuel owns people.”
Vanessa nodded.
“Judges. Lawyers. Police. Bankers.”
Charlotte felt a chill.
“How far does this go?”
Vanessa looked directly at her.
“Farther than you can imagine.”
Then the lights went out.
Everyone froze.
A single gunshot exploded upstairs.
Elena screamed.
Daniel pushed Charlotte to the floor.
Another shot.
Glass shattered.
“Stay down!”
Charlotte grabbed Elena.
“Where?”
“Basement.”
They crawled toward the stairs.
Daniel remained behind.
Vanessa was crying.
“Please!”
Charlotte looked at her.
“Come with us.”
Vanessa stared.
“Why?”
“Because I'm not leaving you here.”
They reached the basement.
Daniel slammed the door.
“Lock it.”
Charlotte did.
The house above them went silent.
Too silent.
Elena whispered:
“He's here.”
“Who?”
“Samuel.”
Charlotte's heart pounded.
“Why would he come himself?”
Elena looked at her.
“Because he knows I've told you everything.”
Charlotte looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa was shaking.
Then a voice came through the basement door.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
“Charlotte.”
She froze.
Samuel.
“I know you're down there.”
No one moved.
“You've been lied to by everyone.”
Charlotte stepped closer to the door.
“What do you want?”
“I want what belongs to me.”
“The trust?”
“No.”
“What then?”
A pause.
“You.”
Charlotte's blood ran cold.
Elena grabbed her arm.
“Don't answer him.”
Samuel continued.
“Your mother made a mistake when she tried to hide you.”
Charlotte's voice shook.
“What do you mean?”
“You are the legal beneficiary of the original agreement.”
“So?”
“So if you die…”
He paused.
“The trust passes to me.”
Charlotte stared at Elena.
Then at Daniel.
Suddenly everything became clear.
The attacks.
The forged documents.
The attempt to destroy her identity.
The manipulation of Vanessa.
The assault in the lobby.
It wasn't about humiliating her.
It was about removing her.
Samuel needed her gone.
Charlotte turned toward the basement wall.
A narrow window sat near the ceiling.
Too small.
But perhaps not impossible.
Daniel whispered:
“There.”
He pointed to an old drainage passage.
Charlotte understood.
They moved.
One by one, they crawled through the narrow tunnel.
Charlotte helped Elena first.
Then Vanessa.
Daniel followed.
They emerged behind the property.
A car waited.
Victoria.
She opened the door.
“Get in!”
They piled inside.
The car accelerated.
Charlotte looked back.
The house disappeared into the darkness.
Elena sat beside her.
Vanessa was crying.
Daniel stared out the window.
Charlotte looked at all of them.
“What now?”
Elena answered:
“Now you learn the truth your mother died protecting.”
Charlotte turned.
“What truth?”
Elena reached into her coat.
She pulled out a small envelope.
It was old.
Yellowed.
Charlotte recognized the handwriting immediately.
Her mother's.
“This was given to me the night before Eleanor died.”
Charlotte took it.
“Why didn't you give it to me before?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of Samuel?”
“Yes.”
Charlotte opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
She read:
Charlotte,
If you are reading this, then Elena survived.
That means the plan failed.
Charlotte's breathing became shallow.
She continued.
There is something I never told you.
Thomas was not your biological father.
Charlotte stopped.
The car seemed to become completely silent.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Elena looked away.
Vanessa stared at Charlotte.
Her hands began to shake.
She read the final line.
And Samuel knows who your real father is.
Charlotte slowly lowered the letter.
Her whole life had just fractured.
Her father.
Her mother.
Her inheritance.
The trust.
The conspiracy.
Everything she thought she knew had become uncertain.
She looked at Daniel.
“You knew.”
He couldn't deny it.
“Yes.”
Charlotte's voice broke.
“How long?”
“Since the night you were born.”
Charlotte stared at him.
“And you let me believe Thomas was my father.”
“I did.”
“Why?”
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“Because Thomas asked me to.”
Charlotte looked down at the letter.
Then at Elena.
Then at Vanessa.
Finally, she whispered:
“Who is my real father?”
No one answered.
Until Vanessa spoke.
Her voice was barely audible.
“I know.”
Charlotte looked at her.
Vanessa swallowed.
“I've seen the records.”
“Who?”
Vanessa looked terrified.
Then she said the name.
“Jonathan Vale.”
Charlotte's face went completely white.
Her uncle.
The man who wanted her inheritance.
The man her mother had spent twenty years hiding from.
The man everyone believed was dead.
Her own uncle.
Her possible father.
Charlotte stared into the darkness beyond the window.
And suddenly, the conspiracy wasn't just about money anymore.
It was about blood.
May you like
It was about identity.
And somewhere in the city, Samuel Vale was waiting for her to discover the one truth that could destroy the entire Vale family.
