Chapter 11

Fire Below

The first explosion shattered the silence beneath the Blackwood Estate.

Dust rained from the stone ceiling as ancient pipes groaned above the underground corridors. Emergency lights flickered on, bathing Basement Seven in a haunting crimson glow.

Grace instinctively grabbed the edge of the table to steady herself.

"What was that?" she shouted.

Jonathan was already moving.

"My brother never attacks without destroying the evidence first."

Another explosion echoed through the tunnels.

This one was much closer.

The floor trembled beneath their feet.

Eleanor hurried toward a wall of filing cabinets.

"They're collapsing the lower support tunnels."

"No," Jonathan corrected grimly. "They're driving us toward the central chamber."

Grace looked between them.

"A trap?"

Jonathan nodded.

"They know exactly where we're standing."

Deep beneath the estate, Michael Blackwood watched dozens of security monitors from a hidden control room.

His expression remained calm as orange warning lights flashed around him.

"Seal every northern passage."

Men wearing black tactical uniforms immediately obeyed.

"And ignite the fuel lines."

One of them hesitated.

"Sir... Daniel is still underground."

Michael didn't even look at him.

"I know."

The guard lowered his head.

Within seconds, another switch was pulled.

Somewhere below the estate, old maintenance pipes burst open.

Flames spread through forgotten tunnels that had remained untouched for decades.

The smell of smoke reached Grace almost immediately.

"It's burning," Isabella whispered.

Black smoke rolled beneath the ceiling, carried by the ventilation system.

Jonathan quickly unfolded an old blueprint.

"The western escape tunnel is already gone."

"What about the archive?" Grace asked.

Eleanor's face fell.

"It will be the next to burn."

Every journal.

Every photograph.

Every blueprint.

Decades of evidence.

All of it would disappear.

Grace clenched her fists.

"We can't let that happen."

Ignoring everyone's protests, she ran toward the archive.

Heat already radiated through the stone corridor.

The air grew thicker with every step.

When she reached the room, small flames were licking across the wooden shelves.

One corner of the archive was already engulfed.

Grace pulled off her jacket and beat at the fire while Eleanor rushed to save the oldest documents.

"Leave the furniture!" Grace shouted.

"Take only the evidence!"

Jonathan grabbed armfuls of folders.

Hospital records.

Membership ledgers.

The Project Bloodline files.

Isabella gathered Catherine's letters and carefully placed them into a waterproof metal case.

Within minutes the room had become an inferno.

A burning beam crashed onto the table, splitting it in half.

The ceiling groaned ominously.

"We have to go!" Jonathan yelled.

"No!" Eleanor cried.

"My blueprints—"

"They're only paper!"

"They're proof!"

Jonathan grabbed Eleanor's arm.

"If you're dead, the truth dies with you."

Reluctantly, she followed.

Seconds after they escaped into the corridor, the archive collapsed behind them in a shower of sparks and stone.

The smoke thickened.

Grace could barely see a few feet ahead.

Daniel, weakened by years of captivity, struggled to keep pace.

His breathing became ragged.

"I can't..."

Grace wrapped one of his arms around her shoulders.

"You can."

"I've never walked this far."

Those words struck her harder than the explosions.

Daniel wasn't simply weak.

He had spent years without freedom.

Every step was unfamiliar.

Suddenly the lights went out.

Complete darkness swallowed the tunnel.

Then came the sound.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Approaching from ahead.

A flashlight flickered to life.

Michael Blackwood stepped into view.

Tall.

Silver-haired.

Perfectly composed despite the chaos surrounding him.

Behind him stood six armed men.

"So," Michael said quietly.

"The family reunion is finally complete."

Jonathan stepped in front of Grace and Daniel.

"It ends tonight."

Michael smiled.

"You've been saying that for twenty years."

His eyes shifted toward Daniel.

"There you are."

Daniel instinctively stepped backward.

Grace felt him trembling.

"You've grown."

Michael sounded almost disappointed.

"I expected more."

Without warning, gunfire erupted.

Bullets struck the stone walls, sending fragments flying in every direction.

Grace pulled Daniel behind a collapsed pillar.

Jonathan returned fire with a pistol hidden beneath his jacket.

The underground chamber exploded into chaos.

Smoke.

Fire.

Shouting.

Stone crashing from above.

One of Michael's men fell.

Another disappeared beneath collapsing debris.

Eleanor desperately shielded the metal case containing the surviving documents.

"We cannot lose these!" she shouted.

A deafening crack echoed through the chamber.

Everyone froze.

A massive support column had split in half.

The ceiling began collapsing.

"Run!" Jonathan shouted.

The tunnel erupted in panic.

Grace grabbed Daniel's hand and sprinted toward the emergency passage shown on Eleanor's oldest blueprint.

Behind them, flames chased through the collapsing corridor.

Michael tried to follow, but falling debris separated him from the group.

For a brief moment, Grace thought they had escaped.

Then Daniel suddenly stopped.

"My mother..."

Grace turned.

"What?"

"My mother's room."

He pointed toward a narrow corridor nearly hidden by smoke.

"There's something still inside."

Jonathan's expression changed instantly.

"No."

"We don't have time."

Daniel pulled away.

"We can't leave it."

Before anyone could stop him, he disappeared into the burning passage.

"Daniel!" Grace screamed.

Without hesitation, she ran after him.

Behind them, another section of the ceiling collapsed, sealing the corridor shut.

Jonathan reached the fallen stones too late.

He pounded against them with both fists.

"Grace!"

No answer.

Only the roar of the fire echoed from beyond the rubble.

Jonathan lowered his head.

For the first time since Grace had met him, the billionaire who never showed emotion looked completely broken.

He whispered only four words.

"I failed them again."

Far beyond the wall of flames, Grace finally caught sight of Daniel.

He was standing in front of an old wooden door almost untouched by the fire.

Carved into its surface was a single symbol.

A white lily.

The same flower Catherine had always loved.

Daniel slowly reached for the brass handle.

As the door creaked open, a rush of cool air extinguished the nearest flames.

Inside the hidden chamber, illuminated by the flickering firelight, stood a glass display case.

Resting inside it was a sealed envelope.

Across the front, written in Catherine Moore's unmistakable handwriting, were the words:

"For my children—when the truth is finally safe."
