Chapter 13

Chapter 13
The Hidden Heir
The black sedan disappeared into the morning mist before the police convoy could reach the mountain road.
Claire lowered her phone slowly.
Richard Holloway had escaped.
For decades, he had stood quietly beside the Ashfield family, drafting contracts, settling disputes, and attending every important meeting. No one had ever questioned the loyal family attorney.
Now they knew why.
He had never been protecting the Ashfields.
He had been protecting the conspiracy.
By sunrise, Ashfield Manor had become an active crime scene.
Forensic teams moved through the burned ruins, photographing collapsed walls and recovering whatever evidence had survived the fire. Every hour brought another discovery—a damaged ledger, fragments of laboratory equipment, or a hidden compartment inside the old library.
Detective Olivia Reed gathered everyone inside the temporary command center.
"We've searched Holloway's office."
She projected several photographs onto a large screen.
"The office was cleaned with professional precision."
Every cabinet stood empty.
Every hard drive had been removed.
Every paper file had disappeared.
Claire frowned.
"He planned this."
Olivia nodded.
"He knew we'd eventually find Margaret's recording."
Arthur stared silently at the photographs.
"I spent thirty years believing I knew the people closest to me."
His voice was heavy with regret.
"I knew almost nothing."
Later that afternoon, Claire examined the evidence recovered from beneath the chapel bell tower.
Most of the documents concerned financial transactions between Ashfield Laboratories and shell companies that no longer existed.
Then she found a thin envelope marked only with the letter H.
Inside was a birth certificate.
The mother's name read:
Margaret Ashfield.
The father's name had been blacked out.
The child's name had been removed completely.
Only one detail remained untouched.
Date of Birth: October 14.
Claire froze.
She knew that date.
It was exactly two years after Noah had been born.
She hurried to Arthur.
"Did you and Margaret have another child?"
Arthur looked confused.
"No."
Claire handed him the document.
His hands trembled.
"I've never seen this."
"You were never told?"
Arthur slowly shook his head.
Margaret had hidden an entire birth.
Or someone had hidden it from both of them.
Father Thomas examined the certificate beneath a reading lamp.
"This paper is genuine."
"So the child existed," Claire said.
"Yes."
"But why erase the name?"
The old priest reached inside the envelope once more.
A second piece of paper slid onto the table.
It was a baptism record.
This time the child's first name remained visible.
Elena.
No surname.
No address.
Only one handwritten sentence at the bottom.
"Protect her until the Circle is gone."
Silence settled over the room.
Noah looked toward Arthur.
"I had a sister."
Arthur's eyes filled with tears.
"I never knew."
Olivia immediately reopened the missing-person database.
"There can't be many women named Elena who disappeared under unusual circumstances."
Hours passed.
Hundreds of records appeared.
Most led nowhere.
Then one profile caught Claire's attention.
Elena Brooks.
Age twenty-three.
Volunteer teacher.
Recently employed at a children's literacy foundation.
The attached photograph made Claire stop breathing.
She recognized the woman instantly.
Only a week earlier, Elena had visited Ashfield Manor to deliver donated books for the estate's community library.
Claire remembered her warm smile, her calm voice, and the silver locket she always wore around her neck.
At the time, she had seemed like an ordinary volunteer.
Now nothing seemed ordinary anymore.
The foundation's director confirmed that Elena had left work unexpectedly three days earlier.
No explanation.
No forwarding address.
Her apartment was empty.
Neighbors reported seeing a black sedan parked outside the building the night before she disappeared.
Olivia quietly closed the report.
"Holloway found her first."
That evening, another package arrived at the investigation center.
No return address.
Inside was a single memory card.
The technicians immediately loaded its contents onto a secure computer.
A video began to play.
The recording showed Elena sitting inside a small room.
She looked frightened but unharmed.
"If someone finds this..."
She took a slow breath.
"My name is Elena Ashfield."
Arthur covered his mouth.
The room fell silent.
"I only learned the truth six months ago."
She touched the silver locket around her neck.
"Margaret left me this."
Inside the locket was a faded photograph of a young woman holding two children.
Margaret.
Noah.
And a little girl.
"I've spent my entire life believing another family raised me because my parents died."
She looked directly into the camera.
"They didn't."
"They were trying to save me."
The video suddenly distorted.
A man's voice interrupted from somewhere off-camera.
"Time's up."
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Noah stared at the frozen image of his sister.
After a long silence, he whispered,
"She's alive."
Claire nodded.
"At least she was when that recording was made."
Olivia folded her arms.
"Holloway didn't erase her identity."
"He hid it."
Arthur stood slowly.
"For twenty-five years..."
His voice broke.
"My daughter has been alive."
Before anyone could continue, the radio on Olivia's desk crackled.
"We've located Holloway's vehicle."
Every head turned.
"Where?"
"An abandoned observatory thirty miles north of the estate."
Claire looked toward the map pinned to the wall.
The observatory stood on the highest ridge overlooking Ashfield Valley.
Remote.
Difficult to access.
Perfect for hiding someone.
Olivia reached for her jacket.
"We move immediately."
As officers hurried toward their vehicles, Claire noticed one final item inside the package.
A folded note.
Written in Margaret's familiar handwriting.
The observatory was never meant to study the stars.
Claire looked toward the mountain silhouetted against the setting sun.

Somewhere inside the abandoned observatory, Elena was waiting.
And if Margaret's final clue was correct, the building concealed one last secret—one that Richard Holloway had been willing to kill to protect.
