Chapter 9

Chapter 9
The Bloodline
The silence inside Basement Seven felt heavier than the concrete walls surrounding it.
Grace stood motionless, her flashlight fixed on Daniel's exhausted face. His warning still echoed in her mind.
"Don't trust Jonathan... but don't trust Isabella either."
It was the first time she realized the truth might not belong to either side.
Daniel slowly lowered himself onto the narrow cot in his cell.
"I've said too much."
Grace stepped closer to the steel grate separating them.
"Daniel, I need you to help me understand."
His tired eyes met hers.
"You think this is a story about a prison."
He shook his head.
"It isn't."
"What is it, then?"
"It's a story about a family."
Several hours later, Grace, Isabella, and Eleanor gathered inside the hidden archive beneath the estate.
The old architect spread dozens of documents across the wooden table.
Hospital records.
Property deeds.
Family photographs.
Letters.
Each piece seemed unrelated until Eleanor placed one final folder in the center.
"This," she whispered, "is the file Catherine died trying to protect."
Grace carefully opened it.
Inside was a certified DNA report.
Across the top appeared two names.
Daniel Moore
Unknown Female Child
Grace frowned.
"This can't be right."
Eleanor nodded grimly.
"Catherine didn't have one child."
She had two.
The room fell silent.
"What happened to the other one?" Grace asked.
"No one knows."
"They were separated shortly after birth."
"Officially, the second baby died during delivery."
Eleanor slid another document across the table.
"The hospital records were altered."
Grace read every page.
The signatures matched.
The dates matched.
Only one detail had changed.
The word Deceased had been stamped over a section that originally read:
Transferred.
Isabella slowly sat down.
Her hands trembled.
"I always believed Catherine gave birth to one child."
Eleanor looked at her.
"That's what everyone was supposed to believe."
Grace looked back at the DNA report.
"If Daniel has a twin..."
"Not a twin."
Eleanor interrupted.
"A younger sister."
Grace stared at her.
"Two children."
"Two heirs."
The realization struck them all at once.
Someone had deliberately erased one child from history.
That evening Grace searched through Catherine's diary again.
Hidden inside the spine she discovered a folded photograph she had somehow missed before.
The image showed Catherine sitting in a hospital bed.
She was holding two newborn babies.
A boy wrapped in a blue blanket.
A girl wrapped in white.
On the back Catherine had written only one sentence.
"No one will ever separate you."
Grace closed her eyes.
Someone had broken that promise.
Jonathan Blackwood was waiting in the mansion's library when Grace returned upstairs.
He stood beside the fireplace with a glass of untouched whiskey.
"You've learned about the children."
It wasn't a question.
Grace stopped several feet away.
"You knew."
"I always knew."
"You let everyone believe Catherine had only one child."
"I had no choice."
Grace's voice hardened.
"You always have a choice."
Jonathan looked toward an old family portrait hanging above the mantel.
"You don't understand my father."
"No."
"And you should hope you never do."
For the first time since Grace had met him, Jonathan looked genuinely afraid.
"My father built this estate."
Grace remained silent.
"He believed blood determined destiny."
Jonathan's voice grew quieter.
"He wanted an heir who could continue the Blackwood legacy."
"What happened?"
"Catherine gave birth to two children."
He closed his eyes briefly.
"My father saw that as a threat."
Grace frowned.
"A threat?"
"He believed two heirs would divide the family fortune."
"So he..."
Jonathan struggled to finish the sentence.
"He ordered one child removed."
Grace felt sick.
"You let him do it?"
"I was twenty-six."
"You were their father."
"I tried to stop him."
His voice cracked for the first time.
"I failed."
Grace searched his face.
There was pain there.
Real pain.
Not the polished confidence she had always associated with the billionaire.
"What happened to your father?"
"He died years ago."
"Then why keep Daniel hidden?"
Jonathan looked directly at her.
"Because the people who obeyed my father never disappeared."
Later that night Isabella found Grace standing alone in the greenhouse.
Neither woman spoke immediately.
Finally Isabella broke the silence.
"I owe you the truth."
Grace waited.
"Catherine wasn't only my sister."
She smiled sadly.
"She raised me after our parents died."
Grace looked at her.
"I promised I'd protect her children."
"So you married Jonathan."
"To get inside this house."
"Did you ever love him?"
Isabella remained silent for a long moment.
"I hated him."
She looked toward the mansion.
"Then I learned he hated himself even more."
As rain began falling outside, Eleanor hurried into the greenhouse carrying an old leather briefcase.
"I found something."
She placed a faded ledger on the table.
The cover bore the Blackwood family crest.
Inside were handwritten records stretching back more than forty years.
Names.
Birth dates.
Blood types.
Family trees.
Every page documented generations of the Blackwood lineage.
Then Grace reached the final section.
Across two pages someone had written a title in bold black ink.
PROJECT BLOODLINE
Below it were dozens of children's names.
Some were crossed out.
Some had red circles around them.
Daniel's name appeared halfway down the page.
So did another.
Subject B-17
Female.
Status: Missing.
Grace looked at Eleanor.
"Is this..."
Eleanor nodded.
"The second child."
Before anyone could speak again, the lights inside the greenhouse suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
A projector hidden in the ceiling flickered to life.
An old black-and-white recording appeared on the glass wall.
An elderly man in an expensive suit looked directly into the camera.
"My name is Edward Blackwood."
Jonathan's father.
"If you are watching this..."
The old man smiled.
"...then Project Bloodline has failed."
Grace's heart pounded.
Edward leaned closer to the camera.
"There is one heir you have not yet found."
The recording ended abruptly.
At that exact moment, a loud crash echoed from the mansion.
Then another.
The estate's security system activated.
A computerized voice filled every corridor.
"Unauthorized entry detected."
Grace turned toward the windows.
Dark figures dressed in black were moving across the estate grounds.
May you like
They were not Jonathan's security guards.
Someone else had come for the missing heir.
