Chapter 11 – The Trap

Chapter 11 – The Trap

The word remained on the screen.

DOUBLE AGENT.

Two words.

Simple.

Cold.

Devastating.

Emily stared at them until the letters blurred.

Because somewhere deep inside, she had always feared this moment.

Not that someone would hurt her.

Not that someone would lie to her.

But that she would finally discover the person she trusted most had been the person she should have feared.

Daniel didn't move.

He didn't deny it.

That was the first thing Emily noticed.

The second thing was worse.

He looked guilty.

Not shocked.

Not confused.

Guilty.

"You knew."

Emily's voice was barely a whisper.

Daniel looked at her.

"Emily..."

"No."

She stepped back.

"Don't say my name."

The pain in her chest was unbearable.

"Everyone keeps saying my name right before they destroy my life."

Adrian watched silently.

Enjoying every second.

Because this was never about the file.

Never about the archive.

Never about evidence.

It was about breaking Emily.

He knew something most people didn't.

A person could survive hatred.

A person could survive enemies.

But trust?

Trust was fragile.

Once destroyed...

It rarely came back.

"I told you."

Adrian walked slowly around the room.

"Everyone around you has been lying."

Emily ignored him.

Her eyes remained on Daniel.

"Was any of it real?"

Daniel swallowed.

"Yes."

"All of it?"

"Yes."

She laughed bitterly.

"That's impossible."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Emily, listen to me."

"No."

She raised her hand.

"Not another explanation."

Her voice shook.

"Not another story where you tell me you did everything because you loved me."

Daniel stopped.

Because he knew.

That sentence hurt because it was true.

Caroline looked at the screen.

Her face was pale.

"Adrian created this."

Adrian smiled.

"Did I?"

She looked at him.

"You manipulated the file."

"Did I?"

His smile widened.

"That's the difference between us, Caroline."

"You lie to protect people."

"I tell the truth to destroy them."

Emily looked at Vanessa.

Even Vanessa looked uncertain.

"Is it real?"

Vanessa didn't answer immediately.

That hesitation was enough.

Emily closed her eyes.

Another wound.

Another secret.

Then Daniel finally spoke.

"Yes."

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at Emily.

"The file is real."

The room went silent.

Emily felt like she couldn't breathe.

"You admit it?"

"I admit there is a file."

"With your name."

"Yes."

"Calling you a double agent."

"Yes."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Then why?"

Daniel looked at the ground.

"Because Adrian wasn't wrong."

Nobody expected that.

Even Adrian looked surprised.

Emily stared.

"What?"

Daniel took a breath.

"I did work for Adrian."

A pause.

"I did gather information."

Another pause.

"And I did betray people."

Emily felt numb.

"Then what was I to you?"

Daniel looked at her.

"The person I was trying to save."

Adrian laughed.

"Beautiful."

Everyone looked at him.

"The classic confession."

He walked closer.

"The guilty man admits just enough truth to appear honest."

Daniel's face hardened.

"You're done."

"No."

Adrian smiled.

"I'm just getting started."

The security doors suddenly locked.

A red light flashed above them.

Emily looked around.

"What did you do?"

Adrian looked amused.

"Me?"

He pointed at Daniel.

"Ask your protector."

Everyone turned.

Daniel's expression changed.

Because he understood.

Too late.

"No."

He rushed toward the computer.

But the screen had already changed.

A countdown appeared.

SYSTEM PURGE: 05:00

Emily stared.

"What is that?"

Daniel's face became serious.

"The archive is being destroyed."

Caroline looked at him.

"Can you stop it?"

Daniel typed quickly.

"No."

A pause.

"Someone activated the emergency protocol."

Adrian smiled.

"Exactly."

Emily looked at Adrian.

"You trapped us."

"No."

He looked at Daniel.

"He did."

Daniel stopped typing.

Slowly.

He turned around.

"What?"

Adrian smiled.

"You really thought I wouldn't notice?"

Silence.

"Your little rebellion."

Daniel's face changed.

"Your secret messages."

"The warnings."

"The evidence you moved."

Adrian laughed.

"You were never invisible."

Emily looked at Daniel.

"Is that true?"

Daniel didn't answer.

And again...

Silence became an answer.

Adrian continued.

"Daniel spent years pretending to be loyal."

He walked closer.

"But the funny thing is..."

He looked at Emily.

"He was never loyal to you either."

Emily's expression hardened.

"Stop."

"No."

Adrian smiled.

"You deserve the truth."

He pointed at Daniel.

"He didn't protect you because he loved your father."

A pause.

"He protected you because Michael paid him."

Emily froze.

"What?"

Daniel looked horrified.

"That's not true."

Adrian laughed.

"Isn't it?"

He pulled up another document.

A payment record.

Emily looked.

A transfer.

Years ago.

A large amount of money.

From Michael Carter.

To Daniel Mercer.

Her heart sank.

"Daniel..."

He closed his eyes.

"I can explain."

Emily shook her head.

"No."

Adrian continued.

"Michael hired Daniel to protect you."

He smiled.

"But after Michael disappeared..."

Daniel kept the money.

The room went silent.

Emily looked at Daniel.

"Did you?"

Daniel's face broke.

"Yes."

A pause.

"But not because of what you think."

Emily looked away.

She couldn't do this anymore.

Every answer created another question.

Every truth had another layer.

The countdown continued.

03:00

Caroline approached Emily.

"We need to leave."

Emily didn't move.

"No."

"Emily."

"No."

She looked at the screen.

"The evidence."

Caroline shook her head.

"We can't save it."

Emily looked at Daniel.

"Can you?"

Daniel stared at the computer.

Then nodded.

"Maybe."

Adrian smiled.

"Of course."

Daniel moved toward the system.

Emily watched him.

She didn't know if she trusted him.

She didn't know if she hated him.

But she knew one thing.

He was still trying.

And that confused her more than any lie.

Daniel entered commands.

The system rejected them.

Again.

And again.

"Come on."

His hands shook.

"What are you doing?"

Emily asked.

"Trying to access a hidden backup."

"You knew there was one?"

Daniel nodded.

"Your father created it."

Adrian's smile disappeared.

For the first time...

He looked worried.

Emily noticed.

And that terrified her.

Because Adrian had been calm through everything.

The accusations.

The betrayal.

The chaos.

But now...

He was afraid.

"What is the backup?"

Emily asked.

Daniel didn't answer.

Adrian did.

"The truth."

Everyone looked at him.

"The one thing I couldn't control."

The timer reached:

01:00

Daniel finally opened a hidden folder.

A video appeared.

Michael.

Alive.

Recording.

Emily stopped breathing.

Her father looked older.

Tired.

But alive.

"Emily..."

Her knees almost gave out.

The video continued.

"If you are watching this, then Adrian failed."

Michael looked directly into the camera.

"But there is something you need to know."

A pause.

"I wasn't betrayed by Caroline."

Emily looked at her mother.

Caroline began crying.

"I wasn't betrayed by Daniel."

Daniel looked away.

"And I wasn't destroyed by Adrian."

The room became silent.

Michael continued:

"The person who betrayed me..."

The video froze.

The system flashed.

00:10

Everyone panicked.

"No!"

Daniel fought the system.

But the countdown continued.

00:05

Michael's face remained frozen on the screen.

00:04

Emily reached toward it.

00:03

Adrian suddenly moved.

Not toward the exit.

Toward the computer.

00:02

He whispered:

"You were never supposed to see this."

00:01

The screen went black.

For several seconds...

Nobody spoke.

Then the emergency lights turned on.

The archive was destroyed.

The evidence was gone.

Almost.

Because before everything disappeared...

Emily saw one thing.

One final frame.

A name.

Not Caroline.

Not Daniel.

Not Vanessa.

Not Adrian.

A name she had never expected.

MICHAEL CARTER'S BETRAYER: EMILY CARTER.

Emily stared at the empty screen.

Her entire body went cold.

"No."

Daniel looked at her.

"Emily..."

She stepped back.

Because the impossible truth had appeared.

Her father had not been betrayed by someone else.

According to the evidence...

He had been betrayed by his own daughter.

Adrian watched her reaction.

And smiled.

Because the trap was never the archive.

The trap was never the evidence.

The trap was making Emily believe she was the villain of her own story.

And now...

May you like

The final battle would not be against Adrian.

It would be against the truth about herself.
