Chapter 6 â The Motherâs Secret

Chapter 6 â The Motherâs Secret
Emily spent the entire night staring at the ceiling.
Sleep refused to come.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Vanessa sitting behind the glass.
That calm expression.
That painful smile.
Those words.
"Ask Caroline who your real father was."
A sentence designed to destroy her.
And it worked.
Because Emily had spent her whole life believing she knew who she was.
Emily Carter.
Daughter of Sarah Carter.
A woman who loved her.
A woman who disappeared.
A woman who sacrificed everything.
But now every piece of her identity had become a question.
By morning, Emily had made a decision.
She was done waiting for people to tell her the truth when they were ready.
She would find it herself.
No more secrets.
No more protection.
No more lies disguised as love.
She drove to the safe house where Caroline was staying.
When Caroline opened the door and saw her expression, she immediately knew.
"She told you."
Emily didn't answer.
That was enough.
Caroline stepped aside.
"Come in."
The room was quiet.
Too quiet.
Two women who shared a lifetime of love and pain sat across from each other like strangers.
Emily placed the photograph of Vanessa on the table.
"She said you stole me."
Caroline closed her eyes.
"She would say that."
"Is it true?"
"No."
The answer came immediately.
But Emily didn't look convinced.
"Then tell me what happened."
Caroline looked at her hands.
For years, she had carried this story alone.
Now she finally had to release it.
"Your father was not Adrian Cole."
Emily waited.
"Then who was he?"
Caroline took a deep breath.
"His name was Michael."
"Michael who?"
"Michael Carter."
Emily frowned.
"That's impossible."
"No."
Caroline looked at her.
"That is the truth."
"Then why does Vanessa say I was proof Adrian lied?"
Caroline's expression changed.
Because that was the question she feared most.
"Because Adrian wanted everyone to believe you were his daughter."
"Why?"
"Because he needed control over Vanessa."
Emily listened carefully.
Caroline continued.
"Years ago, Vanessa and Adrian built their empire together. But Vanessa was never loyal to him."
"She wanted out."
Caroline nodded.
"She wanted to leave."
"And me?"
"You were born during that time."
Emily looked confused.
"How does my birth threaten Adrian?"
Caroline looked toward the window.
"Because Adrian was not just afraid of losing Vanessa."
A pause.
"He was afraid of losing power."
Caroline explained.
Before Adrian became wealthy and influential, he had built everything on one lie.
He convinced people he came from a powerful family.
He created a fake history.
Fake connections.
Fake inheritance documents.
And Vanessa knew.
She was the only person who knew where he really came from.
But Vanessa had her own secret.
Emily.
A child who proved Vanessa had a life before Adrian.
A child whose father was someone else.
Someone Adrian hated.
Michael Carter.
"Why did he hate my father?"
Caroline's expression became sad.
"Because Michael knew the truth."
"What truth?"
"Adrian didn't build his empire."
Emily waited.
"He stole it."
Michael Carter had been a financial investigator.
A brilliant man.
Honest.
Fearless.
He discovered Adrian's crimes years before anyone else.
But before he could expose him...
He disappeared.
Just like Caroline.
Just like many others who stood in Adrian's way.
Emily's hands tightened.
"My father was killed."
Caroline didn't answer.
She didn't have to.
"Then why did you raise me?"
Caroline looked at her.
"Because Michael asked me to."
Emily froze.
"What?"
"Before he disappeared, he knew something was wrong."
Caroline's voice shook.
"He knew Adrian was watching Vanessa."
"He knew you were in danger."
"So he trusted you?"
Caroline nodded.
"He knew I could protect you."
Emily looked away.
All these years...
She thought her mother had abandoned her.
But the truth was much more complicated.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Caroline's eyes filled with tears.
"Because every time I looked at you, I saw a target."
Emily looked at her.
"I wasn't a person to you."
Caroline immediately shook her head.
"No."
Her voice broke.
"You were the reason I kept running."
"Then why pretend you were dead?"
"Because Adrian needed to believe I was gone."
"And Vanessa?"
Caroline became silent.
Emily noticed.
"What?"
"Vanessa didn't know the entire truth."
"What do you mean?"
Caroline looked down.
"She believed Adrian killed Michael."
Emily frowned.
"But he didn't?"
"No."
A pause.
"Someone else did."
Before Emily could ask more, Daniel entered the room.
His face was tense.
"We have a problem."
Emily looked at him.
"Another one?"
Daniel ignored the sarcasm.
"The hidden file has been accessed."
Caroline stood immediately.
"What?"
"Someone opened the archive remotely."
Emily felt cold.
"Can they track us?"
Daniel nodded.
"They already know where the file was."
Caroline looked terrified.
"Then we have to move."
Emily watched them.
The panic.
The fear.
The way everyone reacted like they were being hunted.
And suddenly she understood something.
They weren't running from the past.
They were running from someone who was still controlling the present.
That evening, Emily returned to her apartment.
She needed space.
She needed silence.
She needed five minutes where nobody lied to her.
But when she opened the door...
She knew immediately.
Someone had been there.
Nothing obvious was missing.
That was the terrifying part.
Whoever entered wasn't looking for valuables.
They were looking for something specific.
She searched quickly.
Then froze.
The old letter from her mother was gone.
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
Emily answered.
A voice spoke.
"Looking for this?"
Her blood turned cold.
The voice was familiar.
Vanessa.
"What did you do?"
"I saved you."
Emily laughed bitterly.
"You broke into my home."
"No."
Vanessa sounded tired.
"I took something before Adrian could."
Emily went silent.
"What?"
"The letter."
Emily's heart raced.
"Why?"
"Because Caroline didn't write the whole thing."
"What are you talking about?"
Vanessa paused.
Then said:
"Your mother hid the truth from you."
Emily closed her eyes.
"Everyone says that."
"But I can prove it."
A message appeared on Emily's phone.
An audio file.
She pressed play.
Static.
Then...
A man's voice.
A voice she had never heard before.
But somehow...
She knew.
"Caroline, if anything happens to me, protect Emily."
Michael.
Her father.
Emily covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
"Adrian cannot know she exists."
A pause.
Then:
"Because Emily is the only person who can expose him."
The audio ended.
Emily sat frozen.
Her entire life had been a secret.
A hidden child.
A hidden father.
A hidden war.
Then another message appeared.
From Vanessa.
"Now you know why Adrian is afraid of you."
A second message followed.
"But you still don't know the worst part."
Emily stared.
Then the final message appeared.
"Your father did not disappear. He was betrayed."
Across the city, Adrian stood in front of a wall covered with photographs.
Caroline.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
Emily.
He touched Emily's picture.
The girl who had grown into the one person capable of destroying everything.
A man beside him asked:
"Should we eliminate the threat?"
Adrian smiled.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because Emily is finally asking the right questions."
He looked at the photograph.
"And soon..."
A cold expression appeared.
"She will ask the question that will break her."
"What question?"
Adrian whispered:
"Who betrayed her father?"
Emily sat alone that night.
Holding the recording.
Holding the truth.
But one thought kept repeating.
If Michael was alive...
If someone betrayed him...
If someone had hidden the truth...
Then who was responsible?
And why did everyone who loved her know more than she did?
For the first time...
Emily didn't want answers.
She wanted justice.
May you like
Because someone had stolen ten years of her life.
And she was ready to take everything back.
