Chapter 3 – The Hidden File

Chapter 3 – The Hidden File

Emily stared at the photograph until her eyes burned.

She wanted to believe it was fake.

A trick.

A cruel attempt to confuse her.

Because the alternative was impossible.

Her mother was alive.

After ten years of believing she was gone...

After ten years of mourning someone who might have been living somewhere in the world...

The possibility was unbearable.

Her fingers shook as she zoomed in on the image.

The woman standing beside Adrian was older.

Different.

But Emily knew that face.

She knew those eyes.

She knew the way her mother stood with her shoulders slightly tilted when she was nervous.

It was her.

It was really her.

The next morning, Emily found Daniel waiting outside her apartment.

He knew immediately something had happened.

"Where did you get that?"

He looked at the photograph in her hand.

His face lost all color.

"Daniel."

He said nothing.

"Tell me."

He looked away.

And Emily felt anger rising.

"Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me."

Her voice shook.

"But nobody tells me the truth."

Daniel swallowed.

"Emily..."

"No."

She stepped closer.

"Ten years."

A pause.

"Ten years I thought my mother abandoned me."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"She didn't."

The words were quiet.

But they destroyed the last piece of certainty Emily had left.

They went to Daniel's office.

Not the public one.

A private room hidden behind an old storage area.

Emily noticed the irony.

Everyone in this story had secrets.

Everyone had hidden rooms.

Hidden files.

Hidden truths.

Daniel unlocked a cabinet.

Inside were dozens of folders.

He removed one.

The label was faded.

But Emily could still read it.

Project Phoenix.

"What is that?"

Daniel placed it on the desk.

"The investigation your mother was working on."

Emily opened it.

The first pages were financial reports.

Companies.

Bank accounts.

Transfers.

Names.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Vanessa Reed.

Another appeared even more often.

Adrian Cole.

"Who were they?"

Daniel sat down.

"At first, I thought they were criminals trying to hide money."

"And?"

"And I was wrong."

Emily looked up.

"Then what were they doing?"

Daniel pointed to the documents.

"They were building a network."

"A network of what?"

"People."

Emily frowned.

"People?"

"Powerful people. Wealthy people. Influential people."

He continued.

"Vanessa didn't just manipulate individuals. She collected information about them."

"Blackmail."

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly."

Emily turned the pages faster.

Photos.

Records.

Private conversations.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone had something to lose.

Vanessa knew that.

She didn't force people.

She didn't threaten them directly.

She made them afraid of what would happen if they said no.

"Your mother discovered the network."

Daniel's voice became softer.

"She was going to expose them."

Emily looked at him.

"Then why didn't she?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Because the answer was obvious.

Something stopped her.

A small USB drive fell out of the folder.

Emily picked it up.

"This wasn't in the file."

Daniel frowned.

"I've never seen that."

The drive had no label.

No markings.

Nothing.

Emily looked at him.

"Where did you get this file?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Your mother gave it to me."

"Before she disappeared?"

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you open it?"

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"Because she told me not to."

Emily stared.

"She gave you evidence and told you not to look?"

"She said if anything happened to her, I should only open it when you were ready."

Emily looked at the USB.

"Ready for what?"

Daniel's answer was simple.

"The truth."

They found an old laptop disconnected from the internet.

Daniel inserted the drive.

A single folder appeared.

No password.

No protection.

Just one file.

For Emily.

Her breathing stopped.

"She made this for me."

Daniel nodded.

Emily clicked.

The screen went black.

Then a video appeared.

Her mother.

Older.

Tired.

Afraid.

Emily immediately covered her mouth.

She hadn't heard her mother's voice in ten years.

"Emily..."

The sound alone broke her.

The woman on the screen looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this, then something went wrong."

A tear rolled down Emily's face.

Her mother continued.

"I wanted to come home."

Emily closed her eyes.

"I wanted to explain everything."

A pause.

"But I couldn't."

The video continued.

"Vanessa is not working alone."

Emily looked at Daniel.

They both became still.

"There is someone above her."

Her mother's voice lowered.

"Someone who controls everything."

The video glitched.

Then returned.

"Adrian knows more than he admits."

Emily's heart tightened.

"But he is not the person you should fear most."

Silence.

Her mother looked terrified.

"The person you should fear..."

The video suddenly cut.

The screen went black.

Emily stared.

"No."

She pressed play again.

Nothing.

The file was damaged.

Only half the message remained.

Daniel checked the drive.

"Someone deleted part of it."

"Can you recover it?"

"I'm going to try."

Emily stood.

She felt something changing inside her.

Before today, she wanted answers.

Now she needed them.

That afternoon, Emily visited the place where her mother used to work.

An old financial company that had closed years ago.

The building was abandoned.

But Daniel had found something.

A hidden archive room.

A place nobody knew existed.

The door was behind a false wall.

Inside were boxes.

Thousands of documents.

Emily walked through them slowly.

Her mother's life was hidden here.

Her fears.

Her discoveries.

Her unfinished fight.

Then she found the file.

Her name was written on it.

Not her mother's.

Hers.

Emily Carter – Subject Analysis

Her hands went cold.

"Why would someone have a file about me?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Because he was reading the first page.

His expression changed.

"What?"

He handed it to her.

Emily read.

And felt the world tilt.

Subject: Emily Carter

Age: 18

Status: Potential Threat

Reason: Inherited knowledge from Caroline Carter

Emily stopped.

"Caroline?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Your mother."

Emily shook her head.

"My mother's name is Sarah."

Daniel froze.

"What?"

She stared at him.

"My mother's name was Sarah Carter."

Slowly, Daniel picked up another document.

A birth certificate.

Emily looked.

Her hands trembled.

Because the name on the paper was different.

Emily Caroline Carter.

"Caroline."

She whispered.

Daniel looked horrified.

"Emily..."

"What?"

He didn't answer.

"Daniel, what does this mean?"

He looked through the files.

Then found something else.

A photograph.

A woman.

Her mother.

But younger.

Standing beside another woman.

A woman Emily recognized.

Vanessa.

And between them...

A little girl.

Emily.

The photograph was dated twenty-five years earlier.

Before Emily was born.

Before Vanessa became Vanessa.

Before everything.

On the back of the photograph was handwriting.

Her mother's.

Only five words.

She knows who you are.

That night, Emily returned home.

She couldn't sleep.

Too many questions.

Too many impossible truths.

Then someone knocked on her door.

Three slow knocks.

Emily froze.

"Who is it?"

No answer.

The knocks came again.

She looked through the security screen.

And her heart stopped.

A woman stood outside.

Older.

Tired.

Crying.

Emily didn't move.

Because she knew that face.

She had seen it thousands of times in old photographs.

The woman whispered:

"Emily."

Her hand covered her mouth.

"I'm sorry."

Ten years of pain.

Ten years of questions.

Ten years of believing she was alone.

All collapsed in one moment.

Because standing outside her door...

Was her mother.

Alive.

But before Emily could open it...

A car engine started outside.

The woman looked over her shoulder.

Fear appeared on her face.

"No."

Emily grabbed the door handle.

"What?"

Her mother's voice trembled.

"They found me."

The lights of a black vehicle appeared at the end of the street.

Her mother stepped back.

"Emily, listen to me."

"What?"

"Do not trust Daniel."

Emily froze.

"What?"

Her mother looked at her desperately.

"He's the reason I disappeared."

The car stopped.

The doors opened.

And before Emily could understand anything...

Her mother turned and ran.

Leaving Emily standing there.

Confused.

Terrified.

And more trapped in the truth than ever before.

Because now she had two impossible choices.

May you like

Trust the man who had protected her for years.

Or believe the mother who had returned from the dead.
