Chapter 12 — Edward’s Final Recording

Chapter 12 — Edward’s Final Recording

Edward Harrington smiled from the monitor.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

I had spent weeks believing he was dead.

I had watched people mourn him.

I had seen his grave.

I had listened to stories about his final days.

I had built an entire understanding of my family around the belief that Edward Harrington had died.

Now he was sitting on a screen beneath his own house, looking directly at me.

Alive.

Older.

Calm.

Almost amused.

Daniel stared at the monitor.

“My father.”

Edward leaned closer to the camera.

“Hello, Daniel.”

Daniel's face tightened.

“You're dead.”

Edward smiled.

“That's what I wanted everyone to believe.”

I stepped forward.

“Why?”

Edward looked at me.

“Because if you knew I was alive, you would never have survived.”

“Survived what?”

“The truth.”

The screen went black.

Then another monitor switched on.

A recording began.

Edward appeared seated behind a desk.

This time, he looked much younger.

The date appeared in the corner.

Twenty-three years earlier.

My stomach tightened.

Edward began speaking.

“If this recording is being played, then my plan has failed.”

He paused.

“Or I am dead.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

Edward continued.

“There are four children involved in this story.”

My heart stopped.

Four.

Not three.

Four.

“Two are mine.”

He looked down.

“One belongs to Michael.”

“And one belongs to someone neither of you knows.”

The recording paused.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked at me.

Neither of us understood.

Edward continued.

“The Harrington trust cannot be inherited simply by blood.”

A document appeared on the screen.

“The heir must satisfy three conditions.”

He raised one finger.

“First: legitimate Harrington blood.”

A second finger.

“Second: proof of survival.”

A third.

“And third: proof that the heir did not participate in my death.”

Daniel whispered:

“That means…”

“Yes,” Detective Collins said.

“Someone has been trying to make the heirs look guilty.”

The recording continued.

“Michael has spent years attempting to control the trust.”

Edward's expression became bitter.

“He believes money gives him power.”

A new photograph appeared.

Michael.

Then Evelyn.

Then Robert.

Then Margaret.

One after another.

“All of them have played a part.”

I stared at Margaret's image.

“How?”

Edward answered as if he could hear me.

“Margaret was forced into cooperation.”

The screen showed Margaret standing beside Michael.

“She believed she was protecting her son.”

Daniel looked at me.

“My mother.”

Edward continued.

“She made one mistake.”

The image changed.

A photograph of a hospital nursery.

“She believed switching the babies would save them.”

My heart tightened.

“She was wrong.”

The recording changed.

A hospital corridor appeared.

My mother walked through the frame carrying a newborn.

She stopped outside the nursery.

A nurse approached her.

They exchanged something.

Then my mother entered.

Two minutes later, she came out carrying another baby.

I stared.

“She switched us.”

Daniel nodded.

“But why?”

Edward's voice answered.

“Because Michael had discovered which child carried my bloodline marker.”

The recording showed a laboratory report.

The name had been blacked out.

But the result remained.

GENETIC COMPATIBILITY: HARRINGTON LINE CONFIRMED.

Edward continued.

“He did not know whether the child was Maria or Elena.”

I looked at the woman who called herself Elena.

She stood silently near the doorway.

Edward continued.

“So he decided to kill both.”

My breath caught.

“What?”

“He couldn't risk leaving the wrong child alive.”

Daniel whispered:

“That's why the babies were switched.”

Edward nodded on the recording.

“My wife took one child.”

A photograph appeared.

My mother.

“Robert took another.”

A second photograph.

Robert Vale.

“And Michael took control of the records.”

Then another image appeared.

Margaret.

Edward said:

“Margaret discovered the truth.”

I looked at Daniel.

“She knew.”

“Yes.”

The recording continued.

“She helped hide Daniel.”

I froze.

“What?”

Daniel's face changed.

Edward looked directly into the camera.

“Daniel was the heir Michael feared most.”

The screen showed a young Daniel.

Six years old.

Standing beside Edward.

“He remembered everything.”

A photograph appeared.

Daniel watching his father argue with Michael.

Edward's voice became quieter.

“He saw Michael threaten his mother.”

Daniel covered his mouth.

“I remember.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He stared at the screen.

“I remember that night.”

The recording continued.

Michael stood in Edward's study.

Young Daniel was visible behind the door.

Listening.

Michael said:

“You can't keep him.”

Edward answered:

“I'm his father.”

Michael laughed.

“Not for much longer.”

The recording stopped.

Daniel was crying.

“My father…”

Edward's voice returned.

“I knew Daniel had witnessed the confrontation.”

The screen showed Edward looking directly at the camera.

“I also knew Michael would kill him if he discovered that Daniel remembered.”

“So I disappeared.”

I whispered:

“You staged your death.”

“Yes.”

“I thought Michael killed you.”

“No.”

Edward shook his head.

“I made Michael believe he had.”

The screen showed a body being carried into a vehicle.

A man who looked almost identical to Edward.

Daniel stared.

“That was Michael.”

Edward nodded.

“He believed he was killing me.”

“But he killed himself?”

“Not exactly.”

The recording changed again.

The man in the body bag opened his eyes.

Michael.

Alive.

Edward's voice continued.

“Michael survived.”

I felt sick.

“Then who died?”

“A man hired to impersonate him.”

Daniel looked at Detective Collins.

“Then Michael has been alive all these years.”

She nodded slowly.

“That explains everything.”

Edward's recording became darker.

“Michael created a second identity.”

A photograph appeared.

A man with gray hair.

Different name.

Different passport.

Different life.

But the same eyes.

Michael had been hiding in plain sight.

Then the screen showed something unexpected.

A photograph of Daniel.

Then another.

Me.

Then Jonathan.

Then Elena.

“We were all monitored.”

Edward said:

“Michael built a surveillance network around the family.”

I looked at the room full of monitors.

“He was watching us.”

“Yes.”

Edward continued.

“But someone else eventually took control.”

The screen went black.

Then a new face appeared.

Evelyn.

My stomach tightened.

“Evelyn?”

Edward nodded.

“Evelyn discovered Michael's network.”

The recording showed Evelyn entering the underground room.

“She took control.”

Daniel whispered:

“So Michael wasn't behind everything.”

“No,” Edward said.

“Evelyn became worse.”

The screen showed Evelyn meeting Vivian.

Then Robert.

Then Margaret.

“She recruited anyone who could help her reach the trust.”

I looked at Daniel.

“And Vivian?”

“Vivian was her daughter.”

“She was using her.”

“Yes.”

“What about Margaret?”

Edward's face hardened.

“Margaret believed she was helping protect Daniel.”

“She was.”

“Until she realized Evelyn had changed the plan.”

The screen showed Margaret crying.

“She tried to stop her.”

“But failed.”

The recording suddenly changed.

Edward looked directly into the camera.

“There is something I have not told anyone.”

The room became silent.

“Maria is not the final heir.”

I froze.

“What?”

Daniel looked at me.

Edward continued.

“The true heir is the child who can prove the Harrington line survived without manipulation.”

The screen showed four photographs.

Mine.

Daniel's.

Jonathan's.

Elena's.

Then a fifth photograph appeared.

A child I had never seen.

A little girl.

Dark hair.

Green eyes.

A small silver pendant around her neck.

I stared.

“Who is she?”

Edward whispered:

“My daughter.”

My heart stopped.

Daniel stood.

“You had another child?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Edward's expression became sorrowful.

“Her name is Lily.”

I stared at the screen.

“Where is she?”

Edward didn't answer.

The recording continued.

“She was born after the babies were switched.”

I looked at Detective Collins.

“How old?”

“About twenty-two,” she whispered.

Edward continued.

“She was raised under another name.”

“Why?”

“Because Michael could never know she existed.”

The image changed.

A woman holding the child.

I recognized the woman.

Margaret.

My stomach dropped.

Margaret had raised Edward's secret daughter.

The fourth child.

The one everyone had been searching for.

The child who had supposedly never existed.

Daniel whispered:

“Lily.”

Suddenly, the monitors flickered.

One screen showed Margaret.

Another showed Evelyn.

A third showed Vivian.

Then a fourth showed Michael.

All four were in different rooms.

Edward's recording continued.

“If you have reached this point, someone has already betrayed you.”

The screen showed Daniel.

Then me.

Then Jonathan.

“Trust no one.”

A pause.

“Not even the person who appears to save you.”

Detective Collins stepped closer to the monitor.

“What does that mean?”

Edward continued.

“The final recording will tell you who killed me.”

My heart stopped.

“There is a final recording?”

“Yes.”

The screen displayed a countdown.

10:00

09:59

09:58

Daniel stared.

“What's happening?”

Edward's voice returned.

“When the timer reaches zero, the final file will unlock.”

“What file?”

“The confession.”

“Whose?”

Edward looked into the camera.

“My own.”

The screen went black.

We waited.

The countdown continued.

Nine minutes.

Eight.

Seven.

Detective Collins ordered the officers to search the room.

I stayed beside Daniel.

He looked exhausted.

“Are you all right?”

“No.”

“Neither am I.”

He gave me a faint smile.

“I thought I'd lost you.”

“You almost did.”

“I know.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I believed Edward.”

I looked at him.

“What did he tell you?”

“That if I told you everything, Michael would find you.”

“But Michael already knew.”

Daniel nodded.

“I know that now.”

We sat in silence.

Then the countdown reached one minute.

Suddenly the door behind us opened.

Margaret walked inside.

She was crying.

Daniel stood.

“Mom?”

She looked at him.

“I'm sorry.”

He stepped toward her.

“For what?”

She held up a small envelope.

“Your father asked me to give you this.”

Daniel took it.

He opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

His face changed.

“What does it say?” I asked.

He handed it to me.

Daniel,

If Margaret gives you this letter, I am dead or captured.

You must trust Maria.

She is the only person who can expose the truth.

Then another line:

But do not trust the detective.

I looked at Detective Collins.

She stared back.

“What?”

Daniel looked confused.

“Why would Edward say that?”

Detective Collins shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Margaret whispered:

“Because he knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That someone in law enforcement was working for Michael.”

The lights went out.

Again.

A gunshot echoed.

Detective Collins fell.

“Sarah!”

I ran toward her.

Blood appeared on her shoulder.

But she was alive.

Daniel pulled me behind the desk.

“Stay down!”

Another shot.

Glass shattered.

Then silence.

The monitors came back on.

The countdown had reached zero.

A final video began.

Edward appeared.

But this time he wasn't alone.

Standing beside him was Detective Collins.

Young.

Much younger.

She was holding a newborn baby.

I stared.

“No.”

Daniel looked at me.

“What?”

I pointed at the screen.

“That baby…”

Detective Collins, bleeding on the floor, looked up.

She saw the image.

Her face went completely white.

Edward spoke.

“Sarah Collins was the person I trusted with my final secret.”

Detective Collins whispered:

“No…”

Edward continued.

“She was given one child to protect.”

The camera zoomed closer.

The baby's face appeared.

A silver pendant around her neck.

Edward said:

“Her name was Lily.”

I looked at Detective Collins.

“You had Lily?”

She shook her head.

“I didn't know.”

Edward continued.

“And the person who ordered Sarah to hide her…”

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

Michael Vale.

Then another.

Evelyn.

Then another.

Margaret.

Finally, one last photograph.

My mother.

Edward's voice became almost inaudible.

“Was the woman standing beside me.”

I stared.

My mother.

She had known everything.

But there was one final detail.

The woman in the video wasn't my mother.

She was someone who looked exactly like her.

The screen displayed a name.

Eleanor Harrington.

My mother's twin.

A woman everyone believed had died decades ago.

The woman from the original photograph.

The woman behind the entire switch.

The woman who had supposedly been dead.

Then the video ended.

The last thing we heard was Edward's voice:

“Find Eleanor before she finds you.”

The monitors went black.

Daniel looked at me.

“Maria…”

I shook my head.

“I know.”

“What do we do?”

I looked at the wounded Detective Collins.

Then at Margaret.

Then at the dark monitors.

And finally at the door.

Because someone was standing outside.

A woman's silhouette.

She slowly stepped into the light.

My mother's face.

My mother's eyes.

My mother's voice.

But it wasn't my mother.

She smiled.

May you like

“Hello, daughter.”

To be continued.
