Chapter 13 — The Final Betrayal

Chapter 13 — The Final Betrayal

“Hello, daughter.”

The woman standing in the doorway looked exactly like my mother.

Same eyes.

Same silver-streaked hair.

Same narrow face.

Same small scar beneath her left eyebrow.

But there was something wrong with her smile.

My mother had always smiled as if she were apologizing for taking up space in the world.

This woman smiled as if the world belonged to her.

Daniel whispered:

“Eleanor.”

The woman nodded.

“You remembered.”

I stared at her.

“You're my mother's twin.”

“Yes.”

“You've been alive all this time.”

“Yes.”

“You switched the babies.”

Her smile faded.

“I saved them.”

“You destroyed our lives.”

“I gave you lives.”

I stepped forward.

“You let us grow up believing lies.”

“That was necessary.”

“You let people die.”

She looked at Detective Collins.

“Some people had to.”

Detective Collins was still bleeding from her shoulder.

She raised her weapon.

“Eleanor Harrington, you're under arrest.”

Eleanor laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

“What?”

“You're standing in my house.”

Detective Collins looked around.

The monitors.

The hidden doors.

The cameras.

The tunnels.

Everything suddenly made sense.

This wasn't merely Edward's secret room.

It belonged to Eleanor.

She had been watching us.

She had been controlling the cameras.

She had been moving people around the board.

And Daniel had been right.

The person behind the camera wasn't Robert.

It wasn't Michael.

It wasn't Evelyn.

It was Eleanor.

My aunt.

My mother's twin.

The woman who had been hiding in the shadows for twenty-three years.

“Why?” I asked.

Eleanor looked at me.

“Because Edward was going to destroy you.”

“By protecting me?”

“No.”

She walked slowly into the room.

“By turning you into a weapon.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“Edward didn't love his children.”

She glanced at Daniel.

“He loved the trust.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“He protected us.”

“He protected his investment.”

“You're lying.”

“Am I?”

She pointed toward the screen.

“Look at the recordings.”

Another monitor came alive.

Edward stood in his office.

A much younger Daniel sat across from him.

Edward placed a document in front of the boy.

“You will never tell Maria what you know.”

Young Daniel nodded.

“Why?”

“Because if she learns the truth, she will become a target.”

The recording stopped.

Daniel looked away.

“I remember that.”

Eleanor smiled.

“Of course you do.”

I turned to her.

“You manipulated Daniel.”

“No.”

“You used his fear.”

“Yes.”

“You used Margaret.”

“Yes.”

“You used Vivian.”

“Yes.”

“You used Evelyn.”

“Yes.”

“You used everyone.”

She looked at me.

“Everyone was already using everyone else.”

I felt anger rising.

“And you?”

“I was trying to end it.”

“How?”

“By making sure the trust never transferred.”

I stared.

“Then why did you keep us alive?”

“Because the trust had one final condition.”

“What?”

She stepped closer.

“The heir had to choose family over money.”

I laughed bitterly.

“That's all?”

“No.”

She looked at me.

“The heir had to willingly surrender the inheritance.”

My blood went cold.

“So all of this…”

“Yes.”

“Was designed to test us?”

“Not exactly.”

She lowered her voice.

“It was designed to expose whoever wanted the money badly enough to kill for it.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“And you killed people.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“I stopped people.”

“You murdered them.”

“I removed obstacles.”

“You're insane.”

She smiled.

“Perhaps.”

Daniel moved toward her.

“You destroyed my life.”

“No.”

She pointed at me.

“Your father did.”

Then she looked at Jonathan.

“Michael did.”

Then at Margaret.

“Fear did.”

Then at Vivian.

“Greed did.”

Finally, she looked at herself.

“And I did what I believed was necessary.”

I stared at her.

“You could have told us.”

“No one would have believed me.”

“You could have gone to the police.”

“I did.”

Detective Collins looked up.

“When?”

“Twenty years ago.”

Eleanor pointed toward her.

“Your department buried the case.”

Detective Collins shook her head.

“That isn't true.”

Eleanor smiled.

“Ask your former supervisor.”

Detective Collins froze.

“Captain Reeves?”

“Yes.”

I remembered the name.

Reeves had been the first officer assigned to Edward's supposed murder.

The case had disappeared.

The files had been sealed.

The witnesses had vanished.

Eleanor continued:

“He was Michael's friend.”

Detective Collins looked horrified.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because you weren't ready.”

“I've been investigating this case for ten years.”

“And Michael knew.”

Detective Collins stared at her.

“What are you saying?”

“Your investigation was monitored from the beginning.”

“By whom?”

Eleanor looked toward the ceiling.

“By your own department.”

Suddenly, the door behind us opened.

Three officers entered.

Detective Collins raised her weapon.

“Don't move.”

The first officer lifted his hands.

“We're here to help.”

Detective Collins stared.

“You're not authorized.”

The officer smiled.

“Captain Reeves authorized us.”

My stomach dropped.

Eleanor looked at me.

“Now you understand.”

The officers raised their weapons.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Run.”

We ran.

A gunshot struck the wall.

Detective Collins fired back.

Margaret screamed.

Jonathan pushed Elena behind a pillar.

Chaos exploded.

I ran through a side door.

Daniel followed.

We entered a narrow corridor.

“Where are we going?”

“I don't know!”

“Great.”

We kept running.

Behind us came footsteps.

Then another gunshot.

Daniel pushed open a door.

We stumbled into a room filled with old documents.

Boxes.

Files.

Photographs.

He locked the door.

“Here.”

I looked around.

“What is this?”

“The archive.”

“Whose?”

“Edward's.”

I opened the nearest box.

Inside were hundreds of files.

Bank records.

Medical records.

Birth certificates.

Insurance policies.

Photographs.

Everything.

Daniel opened another box.

Then froze.

“What?”

He pulled out a file.

His face went pale.

“This is my birth record.”

I took it.

The original.

No alteration.

No forged stamp.

No hidden name.

Daniel Harrington.

Father:

Edward Harrington.

Mother:

Eleanor Harrington.

I stared.

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“What?”

“My mother was Margaret.”

He looked at the record again.

“She wasn't.”

My stomach tightened.

“Then Margaret…”

“She raised me.”

“Why?”

Daniel's voice broke.

“Because Eleanor was hiding me.”

I looked at the record.

Eleanor was not merely my mother's twin.

She was Daniel's biological mother.

And if that was true…

“Then my mother…”

“Wasn't your mother.”

The words hurt.

Even though I had heard them before.

Even though I had suspected.

Daniel looked at me.

“Maria.”

“What?”

“We're not siblings.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“According to this…”

He swallowed.

“You and I have different mothers.”

I stepped backward.

Then laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn't process another truth.

“My whole life is a lie.”

Daniel looked at me.

“So is mine.”

A sound came from the archive room.

Someone was outside.

Daniel whispered:

“Stay here.”

“No.”

“I'll distract them.”

“You've done enough protecting me.”

He looked at me.

“It's what I do.”

The door burst open.

Captain Reeves entered.

Older now.

Gray hair.

Calm expression.

A gun in his hand.

“You've caused quite a mess.”

Daniel stepped in front of me.

“Reeves.”

“Daniel.”

“You worked for Michael.”

“I worked for your father.”

“Which one?”

Reeves smiled.

“Both.”

I stared.

“Both?”

“Edward and Michael were partners.”

Daniel looked stunned.

“That isn't possible.”

“It is.”

Reeves lowered the gun.

“They built the trust together.”

“Why?”

“Because they knew the family would eventually destroy itself.”

I looked at the files.

“So the entire inheritance was a trap.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Edward wanted to know who would remain loyal.”

I shook my head.

“That makes no sense.”

Reeves smiled.

“Money rarely does.”

Daniel stepped toward him.

“Where is Michael?”

Reeves laughed.

“You still think he's alive?”

I froze.

“What?”

“Michael died eleven years ago.”

“But Jonathan said—”

“Jonathan was manipulated.”

Reeves pointed at the cameras.

“Eleanor created the illusion that Michael was alive.”

I looked at Eleanor.

She had lied.

Again.

“Why?”

“To keep everyone afraid.”

Reeves nodded.

“She was very good at it.”

Then another voice came from behind Reeves.

“Not good enough.”

Evelyn stepped into the room.

She was bleeding from the arm.

She held a gun.

Reeves turned.

“Evelyn.”

She shot him.

He collapsed.

I screamed.

Evelyn looked at me.

“You have no idea what you've inherited.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You killed him.”

“He was going to kill us.”

“Us?”

“Yes.”

She looked at me.

“Your family has been destroying itself for generations.”

“Then why are you still doing it?”

“Because I want the truth.”

“What truth?”

She looked at the files.

“Who Edward really chose.”

She picked up one document.

“The final heir isn't you.”

She handed it to me.

I read it.

My hands trembled.

The name was:

ELENA VALE.

I looked at Elena.

She stared back.

“No.”

Evelyn smiled.

“She is the heir.”

“But the DNA…”

“Was altered.”

Detective Collins appeared in the doorway.

“No.”

She held a second file.

“The laboratory records were forged.”

I looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“Because I ran an independent test.”

She opened the file.

The real results were inside.

My blood.

Daniel's blood.

Jonathan's blood.

Elena's blood.

The truth was finally there.

I read the conclusion.

Then I couldn't breathe.

“Which one?”

Detective Collins looked at me.

“The trust belongs to…”

She stopped.

A shot rang out.

The document flew from her hands.

Someone had fired from the corridor.

Detective Collins dropped.

I screamed.

“Sarah!”

Daniel dragged me behind a cabinet.

Evelyn disappeared.

Elena ran toward the archive.

Jonathan followed.

And then the building shook.

An explosion tore through the basement.

The lights went out.

Sprinklers activated.

Smoke filled the corridor.

Daniel grabbed my hand.

“We have to go.”

“Sarah!”

“She's alive.”

“How do you know?”

“I saw her move.”

We ran.

But before we reached the stairs, Daniel stopped.

“Maria.”

“What?”

He pointed.

A door had opened.

Behind it was another room.

Inside was a bed.

Medical equipment.

Photographs.

And a woman lying unconscious.

My mother.

But beside her was another bed.

Empty.

The nameplate read:

LILY HARRINGTON.

I stared.

“That's the fourth child.”

Daniel nodded.

“She was here.”

A monitor suddenly beeped.

The empty bed's screen displayed a message.

PATIENT TRANSFERRED.

Then another line appeared.

DESTINATION: HARRINGTON ESTATE.

My heart stopped.

We had left the estate empty.

Or so we thought.

Daniel looked at me.

“Someone took Lily.”

I turned toward the stairs.

“We go back.”

“Maria—”

“We go now.”

When we reached the main hall, the house was burning.

Smoke filled the ceiling.

Police were arriving outside.

People were running.

Detective Collins was being carried toward an ambulance.

I ran to her.

“Where is Lily?”

She grabbed my wrist.

“Don't go inside.”

“Where is she?”

“Maria…”

“Where?”

She struggled to speak.

“Your mother.”

“What about her?”

“She woke up.”

My heart jumped.

“Where?”

Detective Collins pointed toward the burning west wing.

“She went after Lily.”

I stared at the flames.

Then heard a child's voice.

“Mama!”

I froze.

It came from inside.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Don't.”

I pulled away.

“That was my mother.”

“No.”

Another scream.

“Maria!”

I ran into the fire.

The last thing I heard behind me was Daniel shouting my name.

Then the ceiling collapsed.

And the world disappeared into smoke.

When I opened my eyes, I was lying on the floor.

My mother was beside me.

Alive.

Lily was in her arms.

A little girl with dark hair and a silver pendant.

She looked at me.

“Are you Maria?”

I nodded.

She smiled.

“I've been waiting for you.”

My mother began crying.

Then a shadow appeared behind us.

A man stood in the doorway.

I recognized him.

Robert Vale.

But he wasn't holding a camera this time.

He was holding a gun.

He looked at Lily.

Then at me.

And said:

May you like

“Now we find out which daughter your father really wanted.”

To be continued.
