Chapter 14 — The Woman Who Finally Confessed

Chapter 14 — The Woman Who Finally Confessed

Vanessa stopped fighting.

That was how Daniel knew something was wrong.

For weeks, she had denied everything.

The necklace.

The recordings.

The money.

The missing cameras.

Emily's disappearance.

Every accusation had been met with the same cold expression and the same carefully chosen words.

But now she sat alone at the dining table, staring at the empty chair where her son should have been.

She no longer looked angry.

She looked defeated.

Daniel stood across from her.

“Where is your son?”

Vanessa didn't answer.

“Vanessa.”

Her fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

“I don't know.”

“You said the Architect took him.”

“He did.”

“Then tell me who he is.”

Vanessa slowly raised her eyes.

“You already know.”

“My grandfather?”

She nodded.

Daniel's stomach turned.

“That's impossible.”

“No.”

“You're telling me a dead man has been controlling you for twenty years?”

“He isn't dead.”

Daniel stared at her.

Vanessa swallowed.

“He wanted everyone to believe he was.”

Emily stood near the window.

She hadn't spoken since the voice came through the microphone.

She was holding her father's ledger against her chest.

Daniel looked at her.

“Emily.”

She turned.

“Do you believe her?”

Emily looked at Vanessa.

“I don't know.”

Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.

“You should.”

“Why?”

“Because I was there.”

“Where?”

“The night everything began.”

Daniel pulled out a chair.

“Start talking.”

Vanessa looked at the empty doorway.

“If I tell you everything, he will kill my son.”

Daniel's voice softened.

“Then let us find him.”

“You can't.”

“Why?”

“Because he doesn't hide people.”

She looked at Emily.

“He erases them.”

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“My first mistake was believing I could control him.”

Daniel said nothing.

“I met him when I was twenty-three.”

“Where?”

“At a private estate outside Boston.”

“Why were you there?”

“Your grandfather invited me.”

Daniel frowned.

“You knew him before you met Michael?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Vanessa looked down.

“Your grandfather was looking for someone.”

“Someone like you?”

“No.”

She paused.

“Someone willing to do what his family couldn't.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“What did he want?”

Vanessa whispered:

“Emily's father.”

Emily's face went pale.

“My father?”

Vanessa nodded.

“Thomas Carter had discovered the accounts.”

“And your grandfather wanted him silenced.”

“At first.”

“What changed?”

“He read the ledger.”

“What ledger?”

“The original Carter ledger.”

Emily held hers tighter.

Vanessa continued.

“Your grandfather discovered that Thomas wasn't trying to expose the Harrington family.”

Daniel frowned.

“What was he doing?”

“He was trying to recover his family's money.”

Emily whispered:

“My father's family?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa looked at her.

“The Carter family owned the original assets. Your grandfather knew it. Your father knew it. Michael knew it.”

Daniel asked:

“Then why did my grandfather keep the money?”

Vanessa's expression changed.

“Because he believed the Carter family had betrayed him.”

“How?”

“That is the part nobody ever told you.”

She paused.

“Your grandfather and Thomas Carter were brothers.”

Silence.

Emily stopped breathing.

Daniel stared.

“What?”

“Half-brothers.”

Vanessa nodded.

“Thomas was the child your grandfather refused to acknowledge.”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

“He was.”

“My father never told me.”

“He was trying to protect you.”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Then the fortune belonged to Thomas.”

“Part of it.”

“And my grandfather took it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he believed Thomas's mother had stolen something from him.”

“What?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I never learned the whole story.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“But you know enough.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I know your grandfather started the entire war.”

Emily's voice trembled.

“What did he do to my father?”

Vanessa looked at her.

“He offered him a deal.”

“What deal?”

“Return the ledger and keep quiet.”

“My father refused.”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“He was followed.”

“By whom?”

“Michael.”

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“My father was killed by Michael?”

“No.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Michael didn't kill him.”

“Then who did?”

Vanessa looked toward the dark window.

“Your grandfather.”

The room went silent.

Emily's hand covered her mouth.

Daniel stared at Vanessa.

“You're saying my grandfather ordered Thomas's murder?”

“I am.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas discovered the final account.”

“The account containing the billion dollars.”

Vanessa nodded.

“He found where the money had gone.”

“Where?”

Vanessa looked at Emily.

“Into a trust.”

Daniel frowned.

“Whose trust?”

Emily's eyes widened.

“Mine?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa's voice broke.

“Your father had transferred the remaining Carter assets into a trust in your name.”

Emily stared at her.

“And my grandfather tried to steal it.”

“He tried.”

“Did he succeed?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because your mother stopped him.”

Daniel's heart stopped.

“My mother?”

Vanessa nodded.

“She knew everything.”

Daniel sat down.

His entire understanding of his family was collapsing.

“My mother was working with Thomas?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did everyone say they hated each other?”

“Because your grandfather wanted you to believe that.”

“Why?”

“To keep you from looking for the truth.”

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

She was standing in the doorway.

She had heard everything.

“Mom.”

Rebecca's eyes filled with tears.

Vanessa looked at her.

“You should tell him.”

Rebecca didn't move.

Daniel stood.

“Tell me what?”

Rebecca whispered:

“Thomas was the only person your grandfather ever truly feared.”

“Why?”

“Because he had proof.”

“Proof of what?”

“That your grandfather had built the Harrington fortune on stolen Carter assets.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“And you?”

“I tried to protect Thomas.”

“Did you love him?”

Rebecca nodded.

“He was my brother.”

Emily stared at her.

“My father's brother?”

“Yes.”

Emily's eyes filled.

“That means…”

Rebecca nodded.

“You and Daniel are connected by the same family.”

Emily whispered:

“We're cousins?”

Rebecca nodded.

Daniel looked between them.

For a moment, neither spoke.

The revelation was almost too large to comprehend.

The woman Daniel had thought was merely a housekeeper named Rebecca was his mother.

The girl everyone had treated as an outsider was part of his own bloodline.

And the man who had started the war was his grandfather.

Vanessa continued.

“But that's not why I agreed to help him.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Then why?”

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“My son.”

“You said he wasn't involved.”

“He wasn't.”

“Then what?”

“Your grandfather had him.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“When?”

“Before he was born.”

“How?”

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“My husband owed money.”

“To your grandfather?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Enough to destroy us.”

“And your grandfather offered to erase the debt.”

“In exchange for what?”

Vanessa's voice broke.

“Me.”

Silence.

“He wanted me to work for him.”

“What did you have to do?”

“Watch.”

“Watch what?”

“Everyone.”

She looked at Emily.

“Your father.”

“Your mother.”

“Daniel.”

“Michael.”

“Margaret.”

“Anyone who got close to the truth.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You became his spy.”

“Yes.”

“And the necklace?”

Vanessa nodded.

“That was my idea.”

Emily's eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

“Because I needed you to leave the house.”

“You could have simply fired me.”

“Daniel would have stopped me.”

“So you framed me.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you kill me?”

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“Because I couldn't.”

Emily stared.

“You threatened me.”

“I know.”

“You said I would die.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

Vanessa began crying.

“Because every time I looked at you, I saw your father.”

Emily froze.

Vanessa continued:

“He was the only person who ever treated me like I wasn't something he owned.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You cared about him.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you betray him?”

“I didn't.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I tried to save him.”

“What?”

“The night Thomas died, I warned him.”

Emily stared.

“You did?”

“Yes.”

“What did you tell him?”

“That your grandfather was coming.”

“Then why didn't he escape?”

Vanessa looked down.

“Because he refused to leave without the ledger.”

Emily's voice broke.

“He chose the evidence.”

“He chose you.”

Vanessa reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept this.”

Emily stared at it.

“What is it?”

“A letter.”

“From my father?”

Vanessa nodded.

Emily took it with trembling hands.

She opened it.

The paper was old.

The handwriting unmistakable.

If Emily ever asks what happened to me, tell her I chose her.

Emily covered her mouth.

The letter continued.

I knew they would come. I knew I might not survive. But if I leave the truth behind, she will one day be free.

Emily's tears fell onto the paper.

At the bottom was one final sentence.

Tell Rebecca I kept my promise.

Rebecca began crying.

Daniel looked at her.

“What promise?”

Rebecca whispered:

“He promised to protect you.”

Emily looked up.

“Me?”

Rebecca nodded.

“Both of you.”

Daniel turned back to Vanessa.

“You said you weren't the first person to start the plan.”

Vanessa's expression became serious.

“No.”

“Who was?”

She looked toward the ceiling.

“Your grandfather.”

Daniel waited.

“But not even he was the beginning.”

Daniel's heart sank.

“Who came before him?”

Vanessa whispered:

“Your great-grandmother.”

Silence.

“She created the first hidden trust.”

“For what?”

“To conceal the Carter assets.”

“Why?”

“Because she knew the family would eventually fight over them.”

Daniel stared.

“And my grandfather?”

“He found the trust.”

“And stole the money.”

“Yes.”

“And then built his empire.”

“Yes.”

“And everything since then…”

“Was his attempt to make sure nobody reclaimed it.”

Emily looked at the ledger.

“So the necklace…”

“Wasn't the beginning.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“It was the final piece of a plan that started before any of us were born.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Where is my grandfather?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“I don't know.”

“You just said he took your son.”

“He did.”

“Then you know where he is.”

“I know where he was.”

“Where?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“The old Carter estate.”

Daniel frowned.

“The house burned down twenty years ago.”

“No.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“The house burned above ground.”

Daniel's blood ran cold.

“There's a basement.”

“Yes.”

“A vault.”

“Yes.”

“Vault Seven?”

Vanessa nodded.

“He has been living underneath it.”

Emily whispered:

“For twenty years?”

“No.”

Vanessa looked at her.

“He comes and goes.”

“Where does he go?”

Vanessa's face changed.

“To the hospital.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

“He has been sick for years.”

“What kind of illness?”

“Something terminal.”

Daniel stared.

“He's dying.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

Vanessa looked at the clock.

“Soon.”

“How soon?”

She whispered:

“Maybe days.”

Daniel felt a strange mixture of relief and fear.

The man responsible for decades of suffering was dying.

But before he died, he had one final goal.

The fortune.

The trust.

Emily.

And Vanessa's son.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“You're going to help us find him.”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

“And you're going to testify.”

“Yes.”

“You understand what happens after that?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“You may go to prison.”

“I know.”

“You may lose everything.”

“I already did.”

Daniel said nothing.

Vanessa looked at Emily.

“I am sorry.”

Emily didn't answer immediately.

Then she said:

“You don't get to ask me for forgiveness.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.”

“But you can tell the truth.”

“I will.”

Emily looked at the letter in her hands.

“That is the only thing you can still give my father.”

Vanessa lowered her head.

“I know.”

At 6:42 a.m., they left the mansion.

Daniel, Emily, Rebecca, and Vanessa entered two vehicles.

They were heading toward the old Carter estate.

But before Daniel could start the engine, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A man's voice whispered:

“Daniel.”

He recognized it immediately.

His grandfather.

“What do you want?”

“Your mother.”

Daniel's blood ran cold.

“What have you done?”

“Nothing.”

A pause.

“Yet.”

Daniel tightened his grip on the phone.

“If you touch her—”

“You misunderstand.”

“What?”

“I don't want your mother.”

Daniel waited.

“I want Emily.”

Emily looked at him.

The voice continued:

“She has something that belongs to me.”

“The ledger?”

“No.”

“What?”

A quiet laugh.

“The truth.”

The line went dead.

Daniel looked at Emily.

She was holding her father's letter.

Then her phone vibrated.

One message.

From an unknown number.

COME TO THE CARTER ESTATE ALONE.

A second message followed.

BRING THE GIRL.

Then a third.

OR VANESSA'S SON DIES.

Daniel looked toward Vanessa.

She had seen the message.

Her face collapsed.

“My son.”

Emily looked at Daniel.

“What do we do?”

Daniel started the engine.

“We go.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Mom?”

“You don't understand.”

“What?”

Rebecca stared toward the road.

“He doesn't want the ledger.”

“Then what does he want?”

Rebecca's eyes filled with fear.

“He wants Emily to open the vault.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

Rebecca whispered:

“Because the final account isn't inside the vault.”

“Then where is it?”

Rebecca looked at Emily.

Emily slowly touched the necklace hanging around her neck.

Her father's necklace.

The one everyone had thought was merely stolen jewelry.

Rebecca whispered:

“It's inside her.”

Emily froze.

Daniel stared at the necklace.

And somewhere beneath the old Carter estate, a locked door waited.

Behind it was the last secret of two families.

A secret that could restore a fortune.

Destroy an empire.

And finally explain why Emily's father had died.

Daniel put the car into gear.

May you like

This time, they weren't going to uncover the truth.

They were going to take it back.
