Chapter 8 — Vanessa’s Real Motive

Chapter 8 — Vanessa’s Real Motive
Vanessa wanted Emily dead.
The words stayed in Daniel's mind long after Margaret stopped speaking.
Not frightened.
Not angry.
Dead.
Daniel looked at Emily.
She was standing perfectly still.
“What secret?” he asked.
Margaret shook her head.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
“I can't.”
“You've been saying that for twenty years.”
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“This time, I'm telling you the truth.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“What does Vanessa want?”
Margaret whispered:
“The inheritance.”
Emily stared at her.
“She already has money.”
“Not enough.”
“How much?”
Margaret looked toward the will.
“Half the family trust.”
Daniel understood.
“And if Emily dies?”
Margaret swallowed.
“Vanessa becomes the next beneficiary.”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
Daniel turned to her.
“Why?”
“Because the will says I inherit.”
“What happens if you die?”
“I don't know.”
Margaret answered.
“The trust passes to the next living descendant.”
Daniel's face hardened.
“Vanessa.”
Margaret nodded.
“But that's not all.”
“What else?”
Margaret looked at Emily.
“She doesn't just want your inheritance.”
“What does she want?”
“The Carter records.”
Daniel returned to the study.
The will was spread across the desk.
He read every paragraph again.
Emily sat opposite him.
Rebecca stood near the window.
Margaret remained by the door.
Nobody trusted anyone anymore.
Daniel pointed to the inheritance clause.
“Vanessa can't simply inherit everything if Emily dies.”
Rebecca shook her head.
“Not immediately.”
“What happens first?”
“The trust administrator investigates the circumstances.”
“And then?”
“If Emily's death is ruled suspicious, the inheritance is frozen.”
Daniel looked at Rebecca.
“Then Vanessa wouldn't get anything.”
“Correct.”
“Unless…”
Rebecca finished the sentence.
“Unless Vanessa can prove Emily died naturally.”
Emily went pale.
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“So that's why the first necklace was planted.”
Rebecca nodded.
“To create a criminal record.”
Emily looked at her.
“What?”
“If Emily were arrested for theft, Vanessa could establish a pattern.”
Daniel understood.
“Then if something happened to her later…”
“It would look like desperation.”
Emily stared at the floor.
“They wanted everyone to believe I was a thief.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Rebecca answered.
“Because a thief is easier to erase than an heir.”
Daniel stood.
“We need to find Vanessa.”
Margaret immediately said:
“No.”
Daniel turned.
“Why?”
“Because she's expecting you.”
“Good.”
“You don't understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
Margaret shook her head.
“She has spent twenty years preparing for this.”
Daniel looked at her.
“So have you.”
Margaret's silence was enough.
Emily suddenly spoke.
“Where is she?”
Margaret looked at her.
“I don't know.”
Rebecca did.
“The old conservatory.”
Daniel turned.
“Why there?”
“Because Vanessa keeps her private files there.”
“Files about what?”
“Emily.”
They drove to the conservatory before sunrise.
It had once belonged to Daniel's grandfather.
Now it stood abandoned behind the eastern gardens.
The windows were covered in dust.
The doors were locked.
Daniel used the brass key.
It opened.
Inside were shelves.
Boxes.
Old photographs.
And dozens of files.
Emily stopped.
Her name appeared on several folders.
EMILY — SCHOOL.
EMILY — MEDICAL.
EMILY — FINANCIAL.
EMILY — PSYCHOLOGICAL.
Daniel opened the last one.
His expression changed.
“What's wrong?”
He handed it to Emily.
It contained reports from private investigators.
Her habits.
Her friendships.
Her weaknesses.
Her fears.
Her routines.
Everything.
Emily stared.
“They've been watching me.”
“For years,” Rebecca said.
Emily opened another folder.
This one contained photographs.
Her leaving work.
Her buying groceries.
Her walking home.
Her sleeping in the staff quarters.
Her visiting her mother's grave.
She covered her mouth.
“How long?”
Rebecca answered.
“Since you were twelve.”
Daniel looked furious.
“Who paid them?”
Rebecca pointed to the bottom of the invoice.
Vanessa Vale.
Emily turned another page.
There was a report dated six months earlier.
Subject has no knowledge of biological relationship to Vale family.
Another:
Subject continues to believe Thomas Carter was biological father.
Another:
Subject has limited financial resources and no significant social connections.
Emily's hands trembled.
“They thought I was helpless.”
Daniel looked at her.
“They needed you to believe it too.”
Then Emily found a final report.
It was different.
At the top:
PROJECT SUCCESSION
Underneath:
Objective: Remove Emily Carter from Harrington Estate before trust activation.
Daniel read further.
There were three proposed methods.
Criminal accusation.
Mental instability.
Accidental death.
Emily stared at the third line.
“Accidental death.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“What does it say?”
She couldn't speak.
He read it.
Preferred method: fall from east balcony.
His blood ran cold.
The same balcony where Emily had nearly fallen two nights earlier.
Daniel closed the folder.
“That wasn't an accident.”
Rebecca shook her head.
“No.”
Emily whispered:
“She pushed me.”
A noise came from the corridor.
Daniel turned.
Someone was running.
He chased them.
The figure disappeared through a side door.
Daniel followed outside.
A car was waiting.
It sped away.
He couldn't see the driver.
But something had been thrown onto the ground.
A phone.
Daniel picked it up.
One unsent message was open.
She knows about the child.
Daniel froze.
Emily came running.
“What child?”
He looked at Rebecca.
Rebecca's face had gone pale.
“What child?”
Rebecca didn't answer.
Daniel grabbed her arm.
“Tell me.”
She whispered:
“Vanessa had a child.”
Emily stared.
“When?”
“Eight years ago.”
“Where is the child?”
Rebecca looked toward the road.
“That's the secret.”
They returned to the mansion.
Margaret was waiting.
Daniel placed the phone on the table.
“What child?”
Margaret sat down.
Her hands trembled.
“Vanessa's son.”
Emily frowned.
“Where is he?”
Margaret looked at her.
“He's been living in this house.”
Emily's face changed.
“What?”
Daniel stared at his grandmother.
“You mean…”
Margaret nodded.
“The little boy everyone believes is a distant relative?”
Emily's breathing stopped.
“That's Vanessa's son?”
“Yes.”
“Who is his father?”
Margaret didn't answer.
Daniel felt a terrible realization coming.
“Grandmother.”
Margaret whispered:
“Thomas Carter.”
Silence.
Emily stepped backward.
“That can't be.”
Margaret nodded.
“Thomas was Vanessa's biological father.”
Emily stared.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“Then Vanessa and I…”
“Sisters.”
Emily closed her eyes.
Her entire family tree seemed to collapse around her.
But Daniel wasn't looking at Emily.
He was looking at the phone.
The message.
She knows about the child.
He suddenly understood.
Vanessa wasn't afraid Emily would expose the inheritance.
She was afraid Emily would expose the child's identity.
Because if the boy was Thomas's biological son...
then he was also connected to the Carter Trust.
And possibly the inheritance.
Daniel grabbed the will.
He read the succession clause.
Then another paragraph.
His eyes widened.
“There's a problem.”
Emily looked at him.
“What?”
“The trust doesn't pass to Vanessa if you die.”
Margaret looked up.
“What?”
Daniel pointed.
“It passes to the eldest surviving descendant of Thomas Carter.”
Rebecca stepped forward.
“That would be Vanessa.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not if her son is alive.”
Silence.
Emily understood.
“The boy.”
Daniel nodded.
“If Vanessa's son is Thomas's biological child, he outranks her.”
Rebecca whispered:
“That's why.”
“Why what?”
“Why Vanessa needs Emily gone.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Explain.”
“Emily is the only person who can legally challenge the boy's identity.”
“But why would Vanessa want to hide her own son's identity?”
Rebecca's face tightened.
“Because the boy isn't hers.”
Emily frowned.
“What?”
Rebecca looked at her.
“Vanessa gave birth to him.”
“Yes.”
“But she wasn't supposed to have him.”
Daniel felt cold.
“Who was?”
Rebecca whispered:
“Margaret.”
Everyone froze.
Margaret stood abruptly.
“That's enough.”
Daniel stared.
“You took Vanessa's son?”
“No.”
“You hid him?”
“I protected him.”
“From whom?”
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“From his real father.”
Daniel's voice dropped.
“Who?”
Margaret couldn't answer.
Then the front door opened.
Vanessa walked inside.
She was carrying a folder.
Her expression was calm.
Too calm.
She looked at Emily.
Then Daniel.
Then Margaret.
“You found the files.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Tell me about the boy.”
Vanessa smiled.
“You finally figured it out.”
Emily stared at her.
“Who is he?”
Vanessa looked at her.
“Your nephew.”
“Where is he?”
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
“You've been asking the wrong question.”
“What question should I ask?”
Vanessa walked closer.
“Ask why your father gave him to me.”
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“Thomas?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he knew what would happen when the will was opened.”
Emily's voice shook.
“What would happen?”
Vanessa looked at her.
“You would inherit everything.”
Emily swallowed.
“And you?”
“I would get nothing.”
“Unless I died.”
Vanessa nodded.
“Unless you died.”
Daniel stepped between them.
“You planned everything.”
Vanessa laughed softly.
“No.”
She opened the folder.
“I planned one thing.”
“What?”
“To make sure Emily disappeared before she learned the truth.”
Emily looked at the papers.
“What truth?”
Vanessa's expression changed.
For the first time, there was genuine fear in her eyes.
“Your mother didn't die of natural causes.”
Emily froze.
“What?”
Vanessa looked toward Margaret.
“She was murdered.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Daniel stared at her.
“By whom?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Your father.”
Emily couldn't breathe.
“My father?”
Vanessa nodded.
“Thomas Carter killed your mother.”
“No.”
“He did it to protect you.”
“No.”
“He made a deal.”
“With whom?”
Vanessa looked at Margaret.
“Her.”
Daniel turned.
“Grandmother?”
Margaret was crying now.
Vanessa continued:
“Thomas agreed to take the blame for the stolen fortune.”
Emily shook her head.
“Why?”
“Because Margaret promised to keep you alive.”
Emily stared at Margaret.
“And she did.”
Margaret whispered:
“I tried.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You call this trying?”
Then she placed the final document on the table.
It was a death certificate.
Emily's mother's name was on it.
But beneath the official cause of death was a handwritten note.
Cause concealed by order of Margaret Harrington.
Emily looked at the date.
Then at Daniel.
The date was the same night Daniel's father had supposedly died.
Daniel felt the room tilt.
Two deaths.
One night.
Two families.
One secret.
And suddenly the inheritance wasn't the most important thing anymore.
Someone had murdered both families to bury the same truth.
Vanessa looked at Emily.
“You wanted to know why I needed you gone?”
She stepped closer.
“Because you are the only person alive who can prove what happened that night.”
Emily's voice barely came out.
“What happened?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Your mother discovered who really owned the Harrington fortune.”
Daniel stared.
“Who?”
Vanessa looked at him.
Then at Emily.
And smiled without warmth.
“Thomas Carter.”
The room fell silent.
Daniel looked at the will.
At the hidden accounts.
At the photographs.
At Emily.
Everything they had believed about the Harrington family had been built on one lie.
The fortune hadn't belonged to Margaret.
It hadn't belonged to Daniel's father.
It hadn't even belonged to Daniel.
It had belonged to Thomas.
And Emily had inherited it because she was Thomas's daughter.
But if that was true...
why had Thomas spent his entire life pretending otherwise?
Vanessa closed the folder.
“Tomorrow night, the final trust meeting happens.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What happens there?”
“The original ownership records are read aloud.”
“And then?”
Vanessa looked at Emily.
“Then everyone learns who your father really was.”
She walked toward the door.
Daniel called after her.
“Where are you going?”
Vanessa stopped.
Without turning around, she said:
“To get my son.”
Then she disappeared into the darkness.
Emily looked at Daniel.
“Where is the boy?”
Daniel didn't know.
But one thing was suddenly certain.
Vanessa hadn't been trying to steal Emily's inheritance.
She had been trying to control who inherited it.
And somewhere in the city was a child whose existence could change everything.
A child both sisters had been kept from knowing.
A child Margaret had hidden.
A child Thomas had apparently sacrificed everything to protect.
And now Vanessa was coming for him.
May you like
Which meant the next move would not be about money.
It would be about blood.
