CHAPTER 2: THE LETTER HER FATHER LEFT BEHIND

CHAPTER 2: THE LETTER HER FATHER LEFT BEHIND
The bride's hand trembled.
The platinum wedding band slipped from her finger.
It landed beside the small gold ring with a soft metallic sound that echoed through the silent church.
No one moved.
Not the groom.
Not his mother.
Not the three hundred guests.
Emily knelt beside her mother and picked up the worn wooden box.
Inside lay a simple gold wedding ring, polished by decades of love rather than wealth.
Beneath it rested a folded letter.
The paper had yellowed with time.
Her mother's voice shook.
"Your father wrote it three days before he died."
"He asked me not to give it to you until your wedding day."
Emily carefully unfolded the letter.
At the top, in the familiar handwriting she had missed every day for twelve years, were the words:
My Little Star,
Tears blurred her vision.
She continued reading.
"If you're holding this letter, it means I couldn't walk you down the aisle myself."
"That will always be my greatest regret."
A quiet sob escaped from the front pew.
"I cannot choose your husband, but I can tell you how to recognize the right one."
"The man worthy of your heart will never ask you to become smaller so his family can feel bigger."
"He will never allow anyone to humiliate the woman who raised you."
"And if the day ever comes when someone forces you to choose between your mother and your marriage..."
Emily's breathing caught.
"Choose your mother."
"Because any man who deserves to be your husband would already be standing beside her."
The church fell into absolute silence.
Emily slowly lowered the letter.
Then she looked at Andrew.
