CHAPTER 3: THE WEDDING THAT BECAME A LESSON
Andrew reached for her hand.
"This has gotten out of control."
Emily gently pulled away.
"No."
"It finally became clear."
Patricia Whitmore folded her arms.
"You're throwing away your future over a dramatic scene?"
Emily looked directly at her.
"No."
"I'm refusing to build my future on disrespect."
Patricia laughed.
"Your mother embarrassed this family."
Emily turned toward the guests.
"My mother worked two jobs after my father died."
"She skipped meals so I could stay in school."
"She sold her wedding jewelry to pay for my college tuition."
Her voice remained calm.
"But she never once taught me that money makes someone valuable."
She walked across the aisle.

Toward the church doors.
The two security guards immediately released her mother.
"We're sorry, ma'am," one of them whispered.
"We were following orders."
Emily took her mother's hands.
"You never needed permission to attend my wedding."
Her mother began crying.
"I didn't want to ruin your day."
Emily smiled through tears.
"You didn't."
"You saved it."
Behind them, Andrew stood alone at the altar.
