CHAPTER 1

The Birthmark On Her Back

"Look at this shameless girl!"

Gloria Whitmore's voice sliced through the chapel like broken glass.

Before anyone could react, she lunged toward the bride.

Emily Carter barely had time to step backward before Gloria's fingers wrapped around her wrist.

The older woman's grip was surprisingly strong.

"Mrs. Whitmore—please—"

Emily's words were drowned out by another furious shout.

"You thought you could fool my family?"

Gloria spun her around so violently that Emily stumbled.

The guests gasped.

Daniel Whitmore, standing only a few feet away at the altar, froze for one terrifying second.

Then Gloria grabbed the delicate lace at the back of Emily's wedding gown.

"No!"

Daniel shouted.

The sound of fabric tearing echoed through the chapel.

White lace ripped apart beneath Gloria's hands.

The elegant dress that had taken months to create split open across Emily's back.

A chorus of horrified whispers swept through the room.

Someone screamed.

Someone else whispered,

"Oh my God..."

Phones appeared almost instantly.

Tiny glowing screens pointed toward the altar.

Recording.

Watching.

Judging.

Emily instinctively crossed her arms over her chest, but there was nothing she could do to cover the torn back of her dress.

She stood trembling beneath two hundred pairs of eyes.

Daniel reached her in two long strides.

Without hesitation, he tore off his suit jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders.

His hands shook as he pulled the jacket closed.

"It's okay."

He whispered.

"I've got you."

Emily buried her face against his chest.

She could feel his heart racing.

"I'm sorry..."

She whispered through tears.

Daniel gently lifted her chin.

"You have nothing to apologize for."

Then he turned toward his mother.

"What have you done?"

Gloria didn't answer.

She couldn't.

Her eyes were fixed on Emily's exposed shoulder blade.

Just above the edge of Daniel's jacket...

A tiny faded birthmark rested against her skin.

Small.

Delicate.

Perfectly shaped like a swallow in flight.

The chapel disappeared.

The guests disappeared.

Even Daniel's furious voice faded into silence.

There was only the birthmark.

Gloria's breathing became shallow.

"No..."

She whispered.

Her lips trembled.

"No..."

Twenty-eight years earlier.

A hospital room.

The smell of antiseptic.

Rain against the windows.

A nurse smiling.

"You have beautiful twins."

Gloria remembered reaching out with exhausted hands.

"A boy..."

"And a girl."

She had smiled through tears.

Only minutes later, everything changed.

Doctors rushed in.

Nurses surrounded the tiny bassinets.

Someone shouted instructions.

Then silence.

Hours later, a doctor entered her room with lowered eyes.

"I'm terribly sorry."

"Your daughter didn't survive."

Gloria had begged to see her.

Just once.

The answer had been gentle.

But firm.

"There were complications."

"It would be better if you remembered her as she was."

She never questioned it.

Not then.

She trusted them.

She trusted her husband.

She trusted the hospital.

For twenty-eight years...

She believed her daughter had died.

Now...

Standing before her...

That impossible little birthmark stared back at her.

The exact same shape.

The exact same place.

She knew it as surely as she knew her own name.

Because she had kissed that tiny mark only once.

The morning her daughter was born.

Gloria staggered backward.

The room tilted.

Richard Whitmore hurried toward her.

"Gloria."

He reached for her arm.

She pulled away.

"You..."

Her voice barely existed.

Richard frowned.

"What?"

She pointed toward Emily.

"What is that?"

Daniel looked confused.

"What are you talking about?"

Gloria couldn't answer.

She simply stared.

Her face had turned ghostly white.

The minister stepped down from the altar.

"I think perhaps we should pause the ceremony."

Nobody objected.

No one could.

The atmosphere inside the chapel had transformed completely.

Moments earlier, everyone expected vows.

Now...

They stood inside something else entirely.

A mystery.

Emily slowly stepped away from Daniel.

She held his jacket tightly around herself.

Tears streamed silently down her face.

"I don't understand."

She whispered.

Daniel gently brushed loose hair away from her face.

"You don't have to."

"We'll leave."

She nodded.

"Together."

As they turned toward the chapel doors...

Gloria suddenly cried out.

"Wait!"

Everyone stopped.

Emily slowly turned.

Gloria took several uncertain steps forward.

Her eyes never left the birthmark.

"What..."

She whispered.

"What is your birthday?"

The question stunned the room.

Emily blinked.

"My birthday?"

"Please."

Gloria's voice cracked.

"What day?"

Emily hesitated.

"October twelfth."

Gloria stopped breathing.

The exact date.

The exact date her daughter had supposedly died.

Richard moved immediately.

"Gloria."

His tone became sharp.

"Enough."

She ignored him.

"What hospital?"

Emily frowned.

"I..."

"I don't know."

"I was adopted."

A ripple spread through the guests.

Adopted?

Daniel looked at Emily in surprise.

"You never told me."

Emily lowered her eyes.

"I didn't know it mattered."

"It didn't."

Daniel answered instantly.

"It never mattered."

But it mattered to Gloria.

More than anything.

"Who adopted you?"

Emily shook her head.

"I don't know."

"My records were sealed."

"I grew up in foster care until I was eight."

Every answer made Gloria weaker.

Her knees nearly gave way.

Richard caught her arm.

Again she pushed him away.

Harder this time.

"Don't touch me."

He stared at her.

"You're making a scene."

She laughed bitterly.

"A scene?"

She looked around the chapel.

"I already made one."

The silence became unbearable.

Finally an elderly woman stood from the third row.

Margaret Ellis.

Richard's older sister.

She looked at Gloria carefully.

"What did you see?"

Gloria answered without taking her eyes off Emily.

"A birthmark."

Margaret frowned.

"So?"

Gloria slowly turned toward her.

"Our daughter had one."

Margaret froze.

The color drained from her face.

"No..."

"Yes."

"It's impossible."

"I know."

Daniel looked between the two women.

"What daughter?"

Nobody answered.

He looked at his father.

"Dad?"

Richard's jaw tightened.

"There was a baby."

He said quietly.

"She died."

Gloria turned toward him.

"Did she?"

Richard met her eyes.

For one brief second...

He looked afraid.

Emily watched the exchange in complete confusion.

"What is happening?"

She whispered.

Nobody answered her.

Instead...

Everyone looked at Richard.

He loosened his tie.

His breathing grew heavier.

"This is not the place."

He finally said.

"We'll discuss it later."

Gloria stepped closer.

"No."

Her voice was calm now.

Dangerously calm.

"We discuss it now."

Daniel had never seen his mother like this.

She wasn't angry anymore.

She looked...

Broken.

Completely broken.

He gently held Emily's hand.

"I think we should leave."

But before they could take another step...

A voice echoed from the back of the chapel.

"No one should leave."

Every head turned.

An elderly priest stood near the entrance.

Father Michael.

He had baptized nearly every child in town.

Including Daniel.

He slowly walked toward the altar.

"I remember that birthmark."

The room fell silent again.

Richard stared at him.

"You..."

Father Michael nodded.

"I visited the hospital the morning your twins were born."

He looked toward Emily.

"I remember blessing both children."

Richard's face hardened.

"Father..."

"I suggest you stop talking."

The old priest smiled sadly.

"I stayed silent for twenty-eight years."

His eyes filled with regret.

"I don't think God wants me silent anymore."

The chapel erupted into whispers.

Guests who had come expecting a wedding now witnessed something far greater.

A secret.

One buried for almost three decades.

Daniel tightened his grip around Emily's shoulders.

He could feel her trembling.

She whispered,

"I'm scared."

He kissed her forehead.

"So am I."

"But whatever this is..."

He looked directly into her eyes.

"...we face it together."

Gloria slowly approached Emily.

She stopped only inches away.

Her hands trembled as she reached toward the young woman's shoulder.

She didn't touch the birthmark.

She was almost afraid it would disappear.

Tears rolled silently down her face.

"I looked for you."

She whispered.

"For years..."

Richard closed his eyes.

Gloria turned sharply toward him.

"No."

She corrected herself.

"I thought I looked for you."

Then she stared at her husband with an expression Daniel had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Recognition.

The terrifying realization that the man she had trusted most might have stolen far more than her happiness.

He might have stolen her child.

Richard took one slow step backward.

Then another.

For the first time in his life...

The most powerful man in the room looked cornered.

And before anyone could ask another question...

His phone vibrated.

One message.

He glanced at the screen.

The blood drained from his face.

She found the birthmark.

Leave the chapel now.

May you like

Before she remembers everything.
