CHAPTER 4

The Hospital Without Records

No one reached for the cassette.

For several long seconds, the only sound in the abandoned records room was the faint hum of an old fluorescent light and the distant dripping of water somewhere deep beneath the hospital.

Daniel stared at the label.

Conversation Recorded – October 12, 1996.

His hands tightened around the tape.

Richard took one cautious step forward.

"Give that to me."

Daniel didn't move.

"No."

His father's voice hardened.

"You don't understand what's on it."

Daniel looked him directly in the eyes.

"That's exactly why I'm keeping it."

Gloria gently took the cassette from Daniel.

For years, she had imagined the truth would come like lightning—a single revelation that explained everything.

Instead, it came in fragments.

A birthmark.

A forgotten nurse.

A hidden cabinet.

An old tape.

Every answer only exposed another lie.

She turned toward Eleanor.

"Who's Dr. Henry Caldwell?"

The elderly nurse lowered her eyes.

"He was the head of obstetrics."

"The only doctor who refused to sign the death certificate."

The room fell silent.

Emily frowned.

"There wasn't a death certificate?"

"There was."

Eleanor replied.

"But not the one he wrote."

Richard closed his eyes.

"Eleanor..."

"Stop."

She shook her head.

"I stopped twenty-eight years ago."

"I won't stop again."

Daniel searched the evidence box.

Beneath the cassette lay two tiny hospital bracelets.

One read:

BABY BOY – WHITMORE

The second read:

BABY GIRL – WHITMORE

Emily stared at the second bracelet.

She had never owned anything from the day she was born.

Never a photograph.

Never a blanket.

Never even a hospital record.

Yet here, resting inside an old cardboard box, was proof that she had existed.

She reached toward it with trembling fingers.

Before she could touch it, Richard spoke.

"Don't."

Emily looked at him.

"Why?"

His voice cracked for the first time.

"Because once you open this..."

"...none of us can go back."

Emily slowly picked up the bracelet anyway.

"I don't want to go back."

Father Michael arrived only minutes later.

Eleanor had called him from the hospital entrance.

The elderly priest stepped quietly into the records room and immediately recognized the evidence box.

"I wondered if it had survived."

Daniel looked surprised.

"You knew about this?"

Father Michael nodded.

"Henry trusted me."

"He told me if anything happened to him..."

"...someone honest would eventually come looking."

Gloria frowned.

"What happened to Dr. Caldwell?"

The priest sighed.

"He resigned."

"No."

Eleanor corrected softly.

"He was forced out."

Gloria looked between them.

"Why?"

Father Michael answered.

"Because he refused to lie."

The priest carefully picked up the cassette.

"I haven't seen this in years."

Richard suddenly lunged forward.

"Don't play it."

Daniel stepped between them.

"Why not?"

Richard's breathing became uneven.

"Because recordings can be manipulated."

Father Michael smiled sadly.

"Not in 1996."

Eleanor searched through another folder.

"I think..."

She whispered.

"...the tape recorder is still here."

Everyone looked at her.

"You kept it?"

"I hid everything together."

She walked to an old storage shelf covered with dusty medical equipment.

After moving several broken boxes aside, she uncovered a small portable cassette recorder.

Its plastic casing had yellowed with age.

A sticker on the side still read:

Property of St. Catherine's Hospital

Daniel inserted fresh batteries from the maintenance kit.

The machine clicked.

A small red light appeared.

It still worked.

Nobody spoke as Father Michael slowly inserted the cassette.

The room seemed to hold its breath.

The tape hissed.

Static filled the silence.

Then...

A man's voice.

Calm.

Professional.

"October 12, 1996. This is Dr. Henry Caldwell documenting a conversation for legal protection."

Gloria covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

"Present are myself, Mr. Richard Whitmore, and Mrs. Margaret Whitmore."

Richard shut his eyes.

Another voice entered.

Young.

Confident.

Richard.

"Doctor, I need this handled quietly."

Dr. Caldwell replied immediately.

"You're asking me to falsify hospital records."

Richard answered,

"I'm asking you to protect my family."

Silence.

Then another woman's voice.

Elegant.

Cold.

Margaret Whitmore.

"Every family has burdens, Doctor."

"Some simply have the resources to solve them."

Emily felt sick.

The recording continued.

Dr. Caldwell's voice became firmer.

"The baby is healthy."

"I will not sign a false death certificate."

Margaret answered without hesitation.

"Then someone else will."

The tape crackled.

Then Dr. Caldwell spoke words that froze everyone in the room.

"If this child disappears..."

"...I will report every one of you."

The recording ended abruptly.

Silence swallowed the basement once again.

No one moved.

No one even seemed to breathe.

Finally Gloria whispered,

"He knew."

Father Michael nodded.

"He knew exactly what they intended."

Daniel slowly turned toward his father.

"You planned this."

Richard's face remained expressionless.

"I considered it."

"You admitted it."

"I admitted I was desperate."

Emily stared at him.

"You discussed my life like a business decision."

Richard couldn't meet her eyes.

Gloria suddenly slapped him.

The sound echoed through the empty basement.

It was the first time she had ever struck her husband.

"You let me mourn a child."

She whispered.

"For twenty-eight years."

Richard rubbed his cheek but said nothing.

"You watched me visit an empty grave."

Still nothing.

"You held me while I cried."

His silence became unbearable.

Finally he whispered,

"I thought it was over."

Gloria laughed bitterly.

"No."

"You hoped it was buried."

Eleanor quietly searched another folder.

"There should be more."

Daniel looked up.

"What do you mean?"

"The doctor recorded everything."

She frowned.

"There was another interview."

"With someone from Child Protective Services."

Emily's heartbeat quickened.

"My adoption?"

"I don't know."

Eleanor admitted.

"But Henry said he never trusted the official investigation."

The evidence box contained dozens of papers.

Medical charts.

Shift schedules.

Medication logs.

Near the bottom lay a folded map of the hospital.

Several rooms had been circled in red ink.

One location stood out.

Archive B – Restricted Access

Daniel frowned.

"I thought this was the archive."

Father Michael slowly shook his head.

"No."

"This was only Records."

"The real archive..."

He pointed toward the map.

"...was somewhere else."

Eleanor looked surprised.

"I'd forgotten."

"There was a second storage room."

"It held legal files."

"Security recordings."

"Personnel investigations."

"Only Dr. Caldwell had a key."

Gloria's pulse quickened.

"Where is it?"

Eleanor unfolded the map completely.

Her finger traced a narrow maintenance tunnel beneath the building.

"There."

"But after the hospital closed..."

"...they sealed the entrance."

Richard spoke for the first time in several minutes.

"It won't matter."

Daniel looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because whatever was there..."

"...is gone."

Father Michael slowly smiled.

"You sound unusually certain."

Richard said nothing.

The priest studied him carefully.

"Have you already looked?"

Richard's silence answered the question.

Gloria stared at him in disbelief.

"You came back."

He remained quiet.

"You searched for the evidence."

Still nothing.

"You've been hiding this all these years."

His shoulders sagged.

"I tried to destroy it."

Emily felt another wave of nausea.

Every answer made the man standing before her seem more unfamiliar.

This wasn't simply a father protecting his family.

This was someone who had spent decades protecting a lie.

Suddenly a loud metallic crash echoed from somewhere above.

Everyone looked toward the ceiling.

Another crash.

Then footsteps.

Heavy.

Fast.

More than one person.

Daniel frowned.

"Did anyone else know we were here?"

"No."

Gloria answered.

Eleanor's face turned pale.

"Then who..."

Before she could finish, the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire basement went dark.

Emily instinctively grabbed Daniel's arm.

The only light came from their phone screens.

Somewhere in the corridor outside...

A door slammed shut.

Someone was inside the hospital with them.

A beam of flashlight cut through the darkness.

Not theirs.

Someone else's.

It swept slowly across the hallway.

Closer.

Closer.

Then a man's voice echoed through the basement.

"Find the evidence."

"Burn everything that's left."

Daniel immediately switched off his phone screen.

Everyone froze.

Richard looked genuinely terrified.

Gloria whispered,

"They're here because of you."

He didn't deny it.

The footsteps grew louder.

Metal scraped against concrete.

Several people were approaching the records room.

Daniel quietly looked around.

Only one exit.

The doorway.

Already filling with moving shadows.

Then Father Michael leaned close and whispered something that made every face turn pale.

"There's another way out."

He pointed toward the cracked wall behind the filing cabinets.

"Dr. Caldwell built a hidden passage."

"And if my memory is correct..."

He swallowed hard.

May you like

"It leads directly to Archive B."
