CHAPTER 5

CHAPTER 5
The Nurse's Secret
The footsteps grew louder.
Whoever was moving through the abandoned hospital wasn't trying to stay quiet anymore.
Heavy boots echoed through the basement corridor.
Metal scraped against concrete.
A flashlight beam swept across the doorway, pausing for just a second before moving on.
Daniel instinctively stepped in front of Emily.
Father Michael motioned for everyone to remain silent.
Then he hurried toward the cracked wall behind the tallest row of filing cabinets.
"Help me."
He whispered.
Daniel pushed against the rusted cabinet with all his strength.
It groaned loudly.
Everyone froze.
The footsteps outside stopped.
A voice echoed down the hallway.
"I heard something."
Another voice answered.
"Check the records room."
Richard's face turned pale.
"They're coming."
Gloria looked at him coldly.
"You know exactly who they are."
Richard swallowed.
"I..."
"Answer me."
He lowered his head.
"They worked private security for my father."
Daniel stared at him.
"You hired them?"
"No."
Richard replied quickly.
"I didn't call them."
"But you knew they existed."
Richard said nothing.
His silence answered the question.
With one final push, the cabinet shifted several inches.
Behind it appeared a narrow steel door almost completely hidden inside the wall.
Layers of dust covered the handle.
Father Michael smiled faintly.
"Henry was smarter than all of us."
He twisted the handle.
Locked.
Eleanor hurried toward an old maintenance shelf.
"If he hid the passage..."
"...he would've hidden the key nearby."
She searched frantically through rusted toolboxes.
Broken electrical panels.
Old medical equipment.
Finally...
She reached beneath a loose floor tile.
A tiny brass key rested inside a cloth pouch.
"I found it."
The key turned with surprising ease.
The steel door opened inward.
A narrow brick tunnel stretched into darkness.
Cold air drifted through the passage.
Father Michael turned toward everyone.
"Move."
"No talking."
"No lights unless necessary."
Daniel helped Emily through first.
Gloria followed.
Eleanor.
Father Michael.
Richard entered last.
The hidden door quietly closed behind them just as voices burst into the records room.
Flashlights swept across the empty basement.
One man cursed.
"They're gone."
Another answered,
"They couldn't have disappeared."
The leader glanced toward the broken filing cabinet.
"They found the passage."
A third man spoke nervously.
"Should we follow?"
The leader shook his head.
"No."
"Seal every exit."
"They cannot leave the hospital."
Inside the narrow tunnel, the group moved slowly.
The ceiling was low.
Moisture dripped from ancient pipes overhead.
Emily wrapped Daniel's jacket tighter around herself.
Her wedding dress brushed against loose bricks with every step.
Hours earlier she had imagined dancing at her reception.
Now she was escaping through forgotten tunnels beneath an abandoned hospital.
Nothing about the day made sense anymore.
After nearly ten minutes, the tunnel widened into a circular maintenance chamber.
Old electrical boxes lined one wall.
A faded hospital blueprint hung crookedly above a rusted desk.
Eleanor suddenly stopped walking.
She stared at the desk.
"I remember this room."
Gloria looked around.
"What is it?"
Eleanor's breathing became uneven.
"This..."
"...is where I made the biggest mistake of my life."
She slowly approached the desk.
One drawer remained intact despite decades of neglect.
Inside lay an old leather notebook wrapped carefully in plastic.
Her hands trembled as she picked it up.
"I thought I'd destroyed this."
Daniel frowned.
"What is it?"
"My journal."
She whispered.
"I wrote everything."
Gloria looked at her in surprise.
"You kept notes?"
"I had to."
Eleanor replied.
"I knew one day my memory might fail."
"I wanted the truth to survive."
She carefully opened the notebook.
The pages had yellowed but remained readable.
Each entry was dated.
Each shift carefully recorded.
Then she found it.
October 12, 1996.
Her hands began shaking uncontrollably.
Father Michael quietly read over her shoulder.
The first lines were ordinary.
Patient names.
Medication schedules.
Delivery times.
Then the handwriting changed.
It became hurried.
Uneven.
Almost panicked.
Eleanor read aloud.
11:42 p.m.
Mr. Richard Whitmore requested a private meeting.
I refused.
He offered money.
I refused again.
She turned another page.
12:18 a.m.
Mrs. Margaret Whitmore arrived unexpectedly.
She said the girl must never leave this hospital.
Gloria closed her eyes.
"No..."
Eleanor continued.
12:47 a.m.
I informed Dr. Caldwell.
He ordered additional security outside the nursery.
Daniel looked confused.
"If there was security..."
"...how did the baby disappear?"
Eleanor stared silently at the next page.
Then tears rolled down her face.
"Oh God..."
"What?"
Emily whispered.
Eleanor looked at her with unbearable guilt.
"I opened the door."
Nobody spoke.
"I didn't mean to."
She whispered.
"I thought it was Dr. Caldwell."
"But the lights had gone out."
"I couldn't see."
"The man wore a doctor's coat."
"He said the baby needed emergency testing."
"I believed him."
Her voice broke.
"I handed him the bassinet."
Emily felt her knees weaken.
Daniel caught her before she fell.
Eleanor covered her face.
"I watched him carry you away."
"I thought I was saving your life."
"When the lights came back..."
"...he was gone."
Gloria stepped closer.
"You saw his face?"
Eleanor slowly nodded.
"Only for a second."
"Who was he?"
The old nurse hesitated.
Then whispered,
"It wasn't Richard."
Everyone froze.
Richard looked up immediately.
"You see?"
Gloria silenced him with a glance.
"Who was it?"
Eleanor searched her memories.
"He had dark hair."
"A scar near his left ear."
"He walked with a slight limp."
Father Michael frowned.
"I know that description."
"So do I."
Richard whispered.
Daniel looked between them.
"Who?"
Neither man answered immediately.
Finally Father Michael spoke.
"Victor Sloan."
The name hung heavily in the chamber.
Emily frowned.
"I've never heard of him."
Richard looked exhausted.
"He was my father's personal attorney."
Gloria stared at her husband.
"You never told me your father had another lawyer."
"He wasn't just a lawyer."
Richard answered quietly.
"He handled..."
"...special family matters."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"You mean illegal ones."
Richard remained silent.
Eleanor turned another page.
Near the bottom, one sentence had been underlined three times.
Victor Sloan never acted alone.
Below it...
Another name.
One Gloria had never heard before.
Margaret Ellis.
Richard's aunt.
The same woman who had attended the interrupted wedding.
The same woman who had been sitting quietly in the third row.
Daniel frowned.
"Aunt Margaret?"
Eleanor nodded.
"I recognized her that night."
"She distracted security."
"So Victor could enter the nursery."
Gloria felt another piece of her world collapse.
"My own family..."
Father Michael placed a gentle hand on her shoulder.
"The truth often hurts most when it wears a familiar face."
Emily quietly sat on the cold floor.
She could barely process everything she had heard.
"My whole life..."
She whispered.
"...began because someone carried me out of a hospital."
She looked at Eleanor.
"You've blamed yourself all these years."
Eleanor nodded through tears.
"Every birthday."
"Every Christmas."
"I wondered if you were alive."
"If you were loved."
"If anyone ever held you when you cried."
Emily's own tears flowed freely now.
"I was."
She answered softly.
"Not at first."
"But eventually..."
"My adoptive parents loved me."
Eleanor sobbed openly.
"Thank God."
Suddenly Father Michael noticed something tucked inside the back cover of the journal.
A folded envelope.
Still sealed.
Across the front, in Dr. Caldwell's handwriting, were five words.
Open only if discovered.
Daniel carefully broke the brittle seal.
Inside was a single photograph.
Black and white.
Taken inside the maternity ward.
The image showed Gloria asleep in her hospital bed.
Richard standing beside the window.
Two nurses.
Dr. Caldwell.
And one man carrying a newborn wrapped in a white blanket.
His face was partially turned toward the camera.
But the scar beside his left ear was unmistakable.
Victor Sloan.
Yet something else caught Daniel's attention.
Someone stood just behind Victor.
Almost hidden by the doorway.
A woman wearing dark sunglasses indoors.
Only half her face appeared in the photograph.
Gloria stared at the image.
"I've seen her before."
Father Michael leaned closer.
"So have I."
Eleanor's voice trembled.
"She's the one person no one ever questioned."
Daniel looked at the mysterious woman.
"Who is she?"
Eleanor whispered the name with visible fear.
"The hospital administrator."
"Dr. Helen Mercer."
Then Father Michael turned the photograph over.
On the back, written in fading blue ink, was one final sentence from Dr. Caldwell.
If you find this, don't search for Victor first.
Find Helen Mercer.
May you like
She knows where the baby was really taken.
