Chapter 10 – The Missing Evidence

Chapter 10 – The Missing Evidence

The Blackwood empire was collapsing.

But someone was still holding the match.

The world believed the scandal was about money.

About inheritance.

About a wealthy family losing control.

They were wrong.

Because the real battle was not over the fortune.

It was over the evidence.

The one thing that could finally prove who destroyed Eleanor Carter’s life.

And who had spent twenty-five years burying the truth.

The File That Disappeared

Daniel returned to the Blackwood archives before sunrise.

He had barely slept.

Every answer created another question.

Every secret revealed another hidden door.

The original inheritance document was gone.

Jonathan’s journal was incomplete.

And now Thomas Blackwood, the man everyone believed was dead, had become the center of the mystery.

But Daniel believed one thing.

Someone had kept records.

People who committed crimes always made mistakes.

They always left something behind.

The archives were silent.

Dust covered the shelves.

Old family records filled the room.

Daniel walked toward the hidden compartment where he had found Jonathan’s journal.

Empty.

Nothing.

Not even a trace.

Someone had cleaned the entire area.

Whoever did it knew exactly what they were searching for.

James Finds a Clue

“Daniel.”

James appeared at the doorway.

His expression was serious.

“I found something.”

Daniel turned immediately.

“What?”

James handed him a small envelope.

“Someone left this in the company mailroom.”

No name.

No address.

Only one word written on the front.

For Daniel.

Inside was a photograph.

Not old.

Recent.

A man standing outside a building.

Daniel recognized him immediately.

Thomas Blackwood.

Alive.

The Uncle Who Never Died

Daniel stared at the image.

His uncle was not a ghost.

Not a rumor.

Not a family story.

He was alive.

“When was this taken?”

Daniel asked.

James checked the back.

“Three days ago.”

Daniel looked up.

Three days.

The exact time the Blackwood scandal exploded.

Thomas had returned.

Or maybe...

he had never truly left.

The Secret Meeting

The photograph included an address.

An abandoned warehouse near the old industrial district.

Daniel knew he was walking into danger.

But he also knew waiting was worse.

He went alone.

The warehouse smelled of rust and old machinery.

Every step echoed.

“Daniel.”

A voice came from the darkness.

He stopped.

An older man stepped forward.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

But unmistakably a Blackwood.

Thomas.

“You look like your father.”

Thomas said.

Daniel felt anger rising.

“You’re alive.”

Thomas smiled sadly.

“Yes.”

“And everyone believed you were dead.”

“They were told to believe that.”

The Man Who Ran Away

Daniel stepped closer.

“Why?”

Thomas looked around the empty warehouse.

“Because I discovered the truth.”

“What truth?”

Thomas sighed.

“The truth about Margaret.”

Daniel already knew.

But he needed to hear it.

“Tell me.”

Thomas looked at him.

“Your grandmother did not simply hide Emily.”

A pause.

“She erased an entire family.”

The Night of the Betrayal

Thomas explained everything.

Twenty-five years ago, he discovered Jonathan’s relationship with Eleanor.

At first, he thought it was a scandal.

A family problem.

Something that could be managed.

But then he found the documents.

The real inheritance papers.

Alexander Blackwood had never wanted the empire controlled by the most powerful person.

He wanted it controlled by the person who represented integrity.

The person who protected others.

The person who remembered that wealth was a responsibility.

“And Alexander chose Eleanor’s child.”

Daniel said.

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.”

“Emily.”

“Yes.”

Margaret’s Betrayal

Thomas continued.

“Margaret could not accept it.”

“She believed the Blackwood name mattered more than the Blackwood values.”

Daniel remained silent.

“She destroyed the documents.”

“She threatened Eleanor.”

“She forced Jonathan into silence.”

Daniel’s fists tightened.

“And you?”

Thomas looked away.

“I tried to stop her.”

The First Attempt to Expose the Truth

Thomas revealed that he had collected evidence.

Recordings.

Documents.

Witness statements.

Everything proving Margaret’s actions.

“I was going to expose her.”

“What happened?”

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“She exposed me first.”

Daniel frowned.

“She told the family I was mentally unstable.”

“She convinced everyone I was dangerous.”

“She made it look like I abandoned them.”

The Missing Evidence

Daniel looked at him.

“Where is the evidence now?”

Thomas became quiet.

“That is the problem.”

“What?”

“I hid it.”

“Where?”

Thomas looked toward the ground.

“Somewhere Margaret could never find.”

Daniel waited.

“But?”

Thomas’s expression changed.

“Someone else found it first.”

The Unexpected Enemy

Daniel froze.

“Who?”

Thomas looked at him.

“Robert Hale.”

Again.

The same name.

The same man appearing everywhere.

Daniel remembered the photograph.

The board member.

The loyal employee.

The person standing beside the family for decades.

“He knew.”

Thomas nodded.

“He knew everything.”

Why Robert Hale Wanted the Empire

Daniel asked:

“Why would he destroy the Blackwoods?”

Thomas gave a bitter smile.

“Because he never wanted to destroy them.”

A pause.

“He wanted to own them.”

The Real Plan

Thomas explained.

Robert Hale had spent decades building influence inside the Blackwood companies.

He became trusted.

Necessary.

Invisible.

He waited for the perfect moment.

A scandal.

A collapse.

A family divided.

Then he would step in.

Buy the damaged companies.

Control the remaining assets.

And rebuild the empire under his own name.

Daniel felt sick.

“He used Emily.”

Thomas nodded.

“She was the perfect storm.”

The Warning

Before Daniel left, Thomas grabbed his arm.

“Listen to me.”

Daniel turned.

“Robert knows you found me.”

“How?”

Thomas looked afraid.

“Because he knows everything.”

The Attack

Daniel barely reached his car before his phone rang.

James.

“Daniel!”

His voice was panicked.

“What happened?”

“The archive building.”

Daniel stopped.

“What about it?”

“There was a fire.”

His heart dropped.

“Was anyone inside?”

A pause.

“Someone was.”

The Price of the Truth

Daniel rushed back.

Firefighters surrounded the building.

Smoke filled the sky.

The archives where his family stored a century of history were burning.

Not an accident.

A message.

Emily arrived moments later.

She looked at the flames.

“The evidence?”

Daniel stared at the fire.

“Gone.”

But then James approached.

His face was pale.

“Not all of it.”

Daniel turned.

“What do you mean?”

James opened his hand.

Inside was a small memory card.

“I found this before the fire spread.”

Daniel stared.

The missing evidence was not completely lost.

Someone had saved it.

The Recording

They played the file in silence.

Static.

Then a voice.

Margaret.

Young.

Angry.

“You will never take this family from me.”

Another voice.

Jonathan.

“You are destroying everything Father built.”

Then Margaret said something that made Daniel and Emily freeze.

“Then I will destroy the child before I let her inherit it.”

Silence.

Emily covered her mouth.

Because finally...

The truth had a voice.

The War Changes

The evidence was incomplete.

But it was enough.

Margaret had not protected the Blackwood empire.

She had attacked it.

And now the world would know.

Daniel looked at Emily.

“This ends now.”

Emily looked at the burning archives.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“This started twenty-five years ago.”

A pause.

“And it ends with everyone who helped her.”

The Blackwood empire was falling.

But the missing evidence had finally returned.

And with it came the one thing powerful people feared most.

May you like

Accountability.
