Chapter 7 – The First Betrayal

Chapter 7 – The First Betrayal

The Blackwood family had survived for one hundred years because they understood one rule better than anyone else.

Never let the truth escape.

Secrets were not accidents inside the Blackwood empire.

They were weapons.

Stored away.

Protected.

Used only when necessary.

But every weapon eventually turns against the person holding it.

And now the secrets buried beneath the Blackwood name were beginning to destroy the family from the inside.

The Document That Changed Everything

Daniel spent the entire night studying the document Vanessa released.

At first glance, it looked real.

The paper.

The signatures.

The legal language.

Everything appeared authentic.

But Daniel had spent his entire life surrounded by Blackwood documents.

He knew the difference between a real secret and a carefully created lie.

And this was a lie.

A very expensive one.

“Something is wrong.”

James stood across from him.

“You’re certain?”

Daniel pointed at the signature.

“Jonathan never signed documents with this pen.”

James frowned.

“What?”

“My father hated fountain pens. He always used black ink pens because he said fountain ink faded over time.”

Daniel tapped the page.

“This signature was written with blue fountain ink.”

A small detail.

But enough.

Someone had forged a document.

Someone who knew the family well.

The Person Behind Vanessa

Daniel called Vanessa.

She answered after several rings.

“Calling to congratulate me?”

Her voice was bitter.

Daniel ignored the sarcasm.

“Who gave you the inheritance document?”

Silence.

A short pause.

But Daniel heard it.

Fear.

“Why?”

Vanessa asked.

“Because it’s fake.”

Another silence.

Then a quiet laugh.

“You always were smarter than I gave you credit for.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Who helped you?”

Vanessa did not answer.

“Vanessa.”

“You really think I’m the villain here?”

The question surprised him.

“You framed Emily.”

“Yes.”

Her voice became colder.

“I did.”

A pause.

“But I didn’t create the monster that made me do it.”

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa whispered:

“Ask Margaret why she kept the original inheritance papers hidden.”

The call ended.

Emily’s Breaking Point

Emily had stopped watching the news.

Stopped reading comments.

Stopped defending herself.

Because she was tired.

Tired of proving she deserved basic respect.

Claire found her sitting alone outside.

“You’re thinking about leaving.”

Emily looked surprised.

“How did you know?”

“Because your mother did the same thing.”

That sentence hurt.

Emily looked down.

“I don’t want their money.”

“I know.”

“I don’t want their name.”

“I know.”

Emily’s voice cracked.

“I just wanted to know why my entire life was built on a lie.”

Claire sat beside her.

“Sometimes the truth hurts more than the lie.”

Emily smiled sadly.

“But at least the truth belongs to me.”

Daniel’s Confession

That evening, Daniel visited Emily.

She knew immediately something was wrong.

“You found something.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“About my mother?”

“Yes.”

Emily waited.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

A powerful man who faced business enemies without fear...

was struggling to speak.

“My father knew about you.”

Emily froze.

“What?”

“He knew Eleanor had a child.”

A silence.

“And he never came for me?”

Daniel looked away.

“He tried.”

Emily laughed quietly.

“That’s what everyone says.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

“Everyone always says they tried.”

Her eyes became wet.

“But somehow nobody ever succeeds.”

The words hit him.

Because she was right.

The First Betrayal

Daniel took a breath.

“There is something else.”

Emily looked at him.

“What?”

“Your mother’s disappearance
”

He hesitated.

“Was connected to my family.”

Emily became still.

“How connected?”

Daniel struggled.

“My grandmother.”

The room went silent.

Emily stood.

“Your grandmother knew?”

“Yes.”

“And you knew?”

“I found out recently.”

“But you didn’t tell me.”

Daniel had no answer.

Because there was none.

Emily looked at him with disappointment.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Betrayal.

“You’re just like them.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You waited until you had enough information.”

She shook her head.

“You protected your family before you protected me.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“That’s not true.”

“Isn’t it?”

Silence.

Because deep down...

it was.

The Secret Meeting

Meanwhile, Margaret met someone in the old family library.

A person nobody expected.

Vanessa.

“I thought you hated me.”

Vanessa said.

Margaret poured tea.

“I do not waste energy on hate.”

“Then why are you helping me?”

Margaret looked at her.

“I am not helping you.”

Vanessa frowned.

“Then what?”

“I am using you.”

The honesty shocked Vanessa.

Margaret continued:

“You have something I need.”

“What?”

“The ability to make Emily believe Daniel betrayed her.”

Vanessa smiled slowly.

“You want them divided.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Margaret looked toward the old family portrait.

“Because united, they can destroy everything.”

The Hidden Original Will

Daniel returned to the archives alone.

He searched through every file.

Until he found a hidden compartment beneath the floor.

Inside was an old envelope.

The original inheritance document.

His hands shook.

Because this was what everyone had been fighting over.

He opened it.

The first page was normal.

The second page changed everything.

I, Alexander Blackwood, leave the majority of my estate not to my descendants by name...

Daniel continued reading.

But to the person who represents the values this family has forgotten.

Daniel froze.

The heir was not chosen by blood.

Not by status.

Not by surname.

Then he saw the final line.

My chosen heir is Eleanor Carter’s child.

Emily.

The Betrayal Gets Worse

Before Daniel could tell Emily...

The document disappeared.

Someone entered the archives.

Someone who knew exactly where he was.

When Daniel returned, the envelope was gone.

Only one thing remained.

A message written on the desk.

You should have learned from your father.

Daniel stared.

Because there was only one person who knew about his father’s final days.

Margaret.

The Woman Who Walked Away

Daniel found Emily outside Claire’s house.

He carried no documents.

No proof.

Only the truth he had failed to tell her.

“Emily.”

She turned.

“I don’t know if I can trust you.”

Daniel nodded.

“I understand.”

“You are part of them.”

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised her.

“I am.”

A pause.

“But I am trying to become something else.”

Emily looked away.

“Trying is not the same as changing.”

Daniel accepted the words.

Because he deserved them.

Emily walked back inside.

Leaving him alone.

For the first time in his life...

Daniel Blackwood understood what it felt like to lose everything.

Not money.

Not power.

Trust.

The Real Enemy Revealed

Later that night, Daniel received another message.

A photograph.

His father.

Eleanor.

And a third person standing behind them.

Margaret.

The caption underneath said:

Your grandmother didn't just hide the truth.

She created it.

Daniel stared at the image.

The first betrayal had happened decades ago.

But now...

it was finally coming back.

May you like

And this time, nobody would be able to bury it.
