Chapter 6 â The Forgotten Daughter

Chapter 6 â The Forgotten Daughter
The word stayed in the room.
Hide.
Not kill.
Not abandon.
Not betray.
Hide.
But to Emily, it felt almost the same.
Because for twenty years, she had lived with a hole inside her.
A missing piece of herself.
A question she could never answer.
Why did her mother leave?
Why did Sarah Carter disappear?
Why did she choose a life without her daughter?
And now the truth was standing in front of her.
Not because someone finally cared enough to tell her.
Because Emily had uncovered it herself.
Margaret stood in the secret room, surrounded by the evidence she had spent decades hiding.
Her shoulders looked smaller.
Her confidence was gone.
For the first time, Emily did not see the powerful owner of the Harrington mansion.
She saw an old woman carrying a lifetime of guilt.
But Emily couldn't forgive her.
Not yet.
Maybe not ever.
"You knew."
Her voice trembled.
"You knew my mother was alive."
Margaret looked down.
"Yes."
"You knew she didn't abandon me."
"Yes."
"You let me believe she didn't want me."
Margaret closed her eyes.
"Emily..."
"No."
Emily stepped back.
"Don't say my name like you understand."
The pain in her voice was impossible to ignore.
"You had a choice."
Margaret looked at her.
"And you chose silence."
Daniel watched silently.
He had never seen his grandmother like this.
Margaret Harrington was a woman who controlled boardrooms.
A woman who negotiated million-dollar deals.
A woman who never showed weakness.
But now...
She looked defeated.
"Tell us everything."
Daniel's voice was firm.
Margaret looked at him.
"You don't know what you're asking."
"Yes, I do."
"No."
Her voice cracked.
"You don't."
She looked around the secret room.
"Because once you know everything, you can't go back."
Emily laughed bitterly.
"Do you think I want to go back?"
She pointed toward the files.
"Someone stole twenty years from me."
A pause.
"Someone stole my mother."
Margaret looked at her.
"I was trying to save you."
Emily shook her head.
"Everyone says that."
"And somehow, every time, I end up being the one who suffers."
Sarah Carter's Last Day
Margaret finally began.
"Twenty years ago, Sarah discovered what Richard was doing."
Daniel listened carefully.
"My husband had created hidden accounts."
"Money was moved through fake companies."
"People lost everything."
Emily clenched her hands.
"My mother found proof."
Margaret nodded.
"She did."
"She was going to expose him."
Daniel asked:
"Why didn't she?"
Margaret looked away.
"Because Richard found out."
The room became silent.
"Richard threatened her?"
Margaret nodded.
"But Sarah was not afraid of him."
A sad smile appeared.
"That was Sarah's problem."
"She believed people could be defeated by the truth."
Emily looked at the photograph of her mother.
"She was right."
Margaret shook her head.
"Not always."
Richard Harrington had power.
Real power.
Not just money.
Connections.
Influence.
People who owed him favors.
People who feared losing everything.
When Sarah threatened to expose him, Richard did not attack her directly.
He did something worse.
He destroyed her reputation.
"He told everyone Sarah was unstable."
Margaret said.
"He said she was obsessed."
"That she imagined things."
Emily felt sick.
Because it sounded familiar.
The same method Vanessa used against her.
The same pattern.
A person was not defeated by proving they were wrong.
They were defeated by convincing everyone they could not be trusted.
"Then what happened?"
Daniel asked.
Margaret looked at Emily.
"Sarah came to me."
Emily froze.
"She trusted you."
Margaret nodded.
"Yes."
"She thought I would help her."
A tear fell from Margaret's eye.
"And I failed her."
The Choice Margaret Made
Margaret explained.
The night Sarah disappeared, she arrived at the mansion with documents.
Proof.
Enough evidence to destroy Richard.
But Richard already knew.
He was waiting.
"He wanted to make sure Sarah never spoke again."
Emily's breathing became shallow.
"What did he do?"
Margaret hesitated.
"He planned to make her disappear permanently."
Daniel's face hardened.
"Meaning?"
Margaret looked down.
"Meaning he planned to kill her."
Emily felt numb.
Her mother had been hunted.
And everyone had continued living normally.
While Sarah was fighting for survival.
"How did she escape?"
Margaret answered quietly:
"I helped her."
Emily stared.
"You helped her leave."
"Yes."
"You didn't tell me because..."
"Because Richard was watching."
Margaret looked at her.
"He knew Sarah had a daughter."
"He knew you were her weakness."
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
"So you hid me too."
Margaret nodded.
"Yes."
The Forgotten Daughter
For years, Emily had believed she was forgotten.
Unwanted.
Abandoned.
But the truth was different.
She had been hidden.
Protected.
Loved from a distance.
And somehow...
That hurt even more.
Because if Sarah had left because she didn't love her...
Emily could hate her.
But now she knew the truth.
Sarah had left because she loved her enough to disappear.
"Where is she?"
The question came suddenly.
Margaret looked up.
Emily's eyes were filled with determination.
"Where is my mother?"
Silence.
Daniel looked at Margaret.
"She knows."
Margaret shook her head.
"I don't."
Emily stared.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"It's the truth."
"Then why did you say she was alive?"
Margaret looked at the screen.
"The video."
"The photograph."
"Someone wanted you to know."
Daniel frowned.
"Someone else has been protecting Sarah's evidence."
Margaret nodded.
"Yes."
"Who?"
Margaret hesitated.
Then whispered:
"Michael Reeves."
The Man Who Disappeared
Daniel remembered the photograph.
"Richard's former partner."
Margaret nodded.
"Michael was the only person who helped Sarah."
"Then why was he erased?"
"Because he knew too much."
"What happened to him?"
Margaret looked toward the window.
"He disappeared."
Emily frowned.
"Everyone disappears in this story."
Margaret looked at her sadly.
"Because disappearing was the only way to survive."
That evening, Daniel searched through old company records.
He found something disturbing.
Michael Reeves had not disappeared.
His records had been deleted.
His bank accounts closed.
His identity erased.
Just like Sarah.
Just like the evidence.
Someone had systematically removed every person who threatened the Harrington empire.
Then Daniel found one final record.
A property document.
A remote cabin.
Owned under Michael Reeves' name.
Status:
Active.
Last payment:
Three months ago.
Daniel stared.
"He's alive."
Emily looked at him.
"Who?"
Daniel turned the screen.
"Michael Reeves."
Her heart raced.
"The man in the photograph?"
Daniel nodded.
"And if he's alive..."
A pause.
"He may know where your mother is."
Before they could leave...
Emily's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
At first, there was only silence.
Then...
A woman's voice.
Older.
Tired.
But familiar.
Emily stopped breathing.
Because she had heard that voice before.
In dreams.
In memories.
In the small pieces of childhood she still carried.
"Emily."
The world disappeared.
Her hand covered her mouth.
"Mom?"
A shaky breath came through the phone.
"My baby..."
Emily began crying.
Twenty years of pain.
Twenty years of questions.
Twenty years of wondering.
All collapsed into one word.
"Mom."
But Sarah's voice suddenly changed.
Fear returned.
"Listen to me."
Emily wiped her tears.
"What?"
"You cannot trust everyone around you."
Emily looked at Margaret.
Then Daniel.
"Why?"
Sarah whispered:
"Because the person who destroyed my life..."
A pause.
"...is closer to you than you think."
The call ended.
Emily stood frozen.
Daniel looked at her.
"What did she say?"
Emily slowly lowered the phone.
Before she could answer...
A loud crash came from downstairs.
They rushed out of the secret room.
The mansion alarm began screaming.
The front door was open.
Someone had entered.
On the floor near the entrance...
Was another envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Emily picked it up.
Her blood ran cold.
It was a picture of her.
Taken that morning.
Inside the Harrington mansion.
Someone had been watching her.
The entire time.
On the back of the photograph were seven words.
YOU FOUND YOUR MOTHER. NOW LOSE YOURSELF.
Emily stared at the message.
The necklace had been a trap.
The secret room had been a warning.
And now...
Someone had moved from hiding to attacking.
The enemy was no longer trying to erase the past.
They were trying to destroy Emily.
