Chapter 8 â The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Chapter 8 â The Woman Who Knew Too Much
The message remained on the screen.
YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THE WRONG MONSTER.
THE REAL ONE IS STANDING BESIDE YOU.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Because everyone in the room understood what those words meant.
The person who had been helping Emily find the truth...
The person who had guided her toward the secret rooms...
The person who had revealed the hidden recordings...
Was also possibly the person who had destroyed her mother's life.
Emily slowly turned around.
Her eyes moved from one person to another.
Margaret.
Daniel.
Neither spoke.
The silence was worse than an accusation.
Because silence allowed fear to grow.
And fear was exactly what the person behind this wanted.
"Who sent this?"
Daniel's voice broke the tension.
He stepped toward the computer.
"I don't know."
Emily looked at him.
"You don't know?"
"No."
"You found the recordings."
"Yes."
"You knew about the rooms."
"I discovered them with you."
"But someone always seems one step ahead of us."
Daniel didn't answer.
Because she was right.
Every time they found something...
Someone knew.
Every time they opened a door...
Someone had already prepared the next trap.
Margaret slowly sat down.
Her hands trembled.
"I think I know who did this."
Everyone looked at her.
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Who?"
Margaret looked toward the dark hallway.
"The person who knows the most."
Emily frowned.
"Who?"
Margaret whispered:
"Elena."
The name meant nothing to Emily.
But Daniel reacted.
"Elena?"
Margaret nodded.
"Your grandfather's assistant."
Daniel looked confused.
"She disappeared twenty years ago."
Margaret's eyes became distant.
"No."
A pause.
"She was made to disappear."
The Woman Behind the Records
Margaret explained.
Before Sarah Carter discovered the hidden accounts, there was another person who had noticed something wrong.
Elena Walsh.
Richard Harrington's personal assistant.
She had worked beside him for twelve years.
She knew every meeting.
Every document.
Every transaction.
Every secret.
"She knew where everything was hidden."
Margaret said.
"And that made her dangerous."
Daniel searched through the old files.
"Why have I never heard of her?"
Margaret looked ashamed.
"Because Richard removed her name from company records."
"Photos."
"Documents."
"Everything."
Emily stared.
"Like Michael Reeves."
Margaret nodded.
"Exactly."
The Harrington family had perfected one method.
They did not destroy people.
They erased them.
They made the world forget they existed.
Daniel found a file.
ELENA WALSH
The folder contained almost nothing.
Only one photograph.
A young woman standing beside Richard.
Emily studied it.
"She looks scared."
Margaret nodded.
"Because she was."
The Woman Who Saw Everything
Twenty years ago, Elena discovered Richard's illegal activities before Sarah did.
But unlike Sarah...
Elena understood something.
Truth alone was dangerous.
Evidence alone was dangerous.
Because powerful people could destroy evidence.
They could destroy witnesses.
They could destroy reputations.
So Elena did something different.
She collected everything.
Quietly.
Carefully.
She created copies.
Backups.
Insurance.
"She built the archive."
Daniel looked around the room.
Margaret nodded.
"Yes."
"The secret rooms?"
"Some were hers."
"Some were Richard's."
Emily felt overwhelmed.
The Harrington mansion wasn't a home.
It was a battlefield.
A place where everyone had been collecting weapons.
Then Daniel noticed something.
A date on Elena's file.
Last known location: Harrington Estate
Twenty years ago.
"She never left."
Margaret looked at him.
"Not officially."
Daniel frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Margaret didn't answer.
The Hidden Basement
They searched the lower levels of the mansion.
The old sections.
The areas that had not been renovated for decades.
Emily followed behind Daniel.
She felt something strange.
The mansion no longer felt unfamiliar.
It felt like she was walking through someone's memory.
Every hallway held a story.
Every locked door held someone's pain.
At the end of the basement was another entrance.
Different from the others.
This one was newer.
A keypad.
Daniel looked at Margaret.
"Another secret?"
Margaret shook her head.
"I didn't know this existed."
That surprised him.
Because if Margaret didn't know...
Someone else had built it.
Daniel entered a code from the old documents.
The door opened.
Inside was a small room.
No photographs.
No files.
No recordings.
Only one chair.
And a table.
On the table was a handwritten journal.
Emily picked it up.
The first page contained one sentence.
I stayed because someone had to remember.
The journal belonged to Elena.
She had written everything.
The truth.
The lies.
The people involved.
The decisions made.
Emily turned the pages.
Then she stopped.
A name appeared again and again.
Sarah Carter.
Sarah was brave.
Sarah was stubborn.
Sarah trusted the wrong people.
Emily felt her heart tighten.
Then she saw another line.
The person Sarah trusted most was the person who betrayed her.
Emily closed the journal.
"Again."
Daniel looked at her.
"What?"
"Everyone keeps saying the same thing."
"Someone betrayed my mother."
"Someone she trusted."
"But nobody says who."
Suddenly...
A sound came from behind them.
A door closing.
They turned.
Nobody was there.
But a voice echoed from the hallway.
"You want to know who betrayed Sarah?"
Everyone froze.
The voice was old.
Female.
Calm.
Emily stepped forward.
"Who are you?"
A figure slowly appeared from the darkness.
An elderly woman.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
But a face Emily somehow recognized.
Not from memory.
From photographs.
Margaret whispered:
"Elena."
The woman looked at Emily.
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then tears filled her eyes.
"You look exactly like her."
Emily couldn't move.
"Like who?"
Elena smiled sadly.
"Your mother."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Where have you been?"
Elena looked around the basement.
"Watching."
"Waiting."
"Making sure the truth survived."
Emily stared.
"Why now?"
Elena looked at her.
"Because you finally reached the point where I can no longer protect you."
The words confused her.
"Protect me from what?"
Elena looked toward the mansion above them.
"From the person who has been guiding you."
Daniel immediately became tense.
"Who?"
Elena's eyes moved toward him.
And Emily noticed.
She looked at Daniel.
No.
Impossible.
But the fear in Elena's eyes...
It wasn't directed at Margaret.
It wasn't directed at Vanessa.
It was directed at Daniel.
Emily felt her stomach drop.
"Daniel?"
He looked shocked.
"Emily, no."
Elena shook her head.
"Don't make the mistake your mother made."
Daniel's voice hardened.
"Elena, you don't know what you're talking about."
The old woman laughed softly.
"Don't I?"
She reached into her coat.
Pulled out a small envelope.
And handed it to Emily.
"This was written by Sarah."
Emily opened it immediately.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Emily,
If Daniel Harrington is helping you find the truth...
be careful.
Emily stopped breathing.
The next sentence made her hands shake.
Because Daniel knows more about my disappearance than he admits.
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at Emily.
"That isn't what you think."
But Emily stepped back.
For the first time...
She wasn't sure.
Because the person she trusted most...
The person who stood beside her when everyone else doubted her...
Might have been part of the lie from the beginning.
Later that night, Vanessa received a message.
A photograph.
Emily standing beside Elena.
Vanessa smiled.
Finally.
The game had changed.
She typed one sentence.
Now she will destroy the only person who can save her.
But Vanessa was wrong about one thing.
Emily was no longer the woman who needed saving.
The woman who had been accused of theft.
The woman who had been humiliated in front of strangers.
The woman who once waited for others to reveal the truth.
That woman was gone.
Now Emily wanted answers.
And she would tear apart the Harrington family to find them.
