Chapter 7 – The Second Recording

Chapter 7 – The Second Recording

The photograph fell from Emily's hand.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The message written on the back seemed to burn into her mind.

YOU FOUND YOUR MOTHER. NOW LOSE YOURSELF.

Someone had been watching her.

Someone had followed her.

Someone knew exactly what she was discovering.

And they wanted her to know they were close.

Daniel immediately moved toward the entrance.

"Stay here."

Emily looked at him.

"No."

"Emily."

"No."

Her voice was stronger than he expected.

"Not anymore."

She picked up the photograph.

"For twenty years, people have been deciding what I should know."

"People have been deciding what I can handle."

She looked around the mansion.

"This ends now."

Daniel stared at her.

The woman standing in front of him was not the same person who had stood in the foyer days ago, terrified while everyone accused her.

That Emily was still there.

But something else had awakened.

A woman who was tired of being protected by lies.

Security searched the mansion.

Nothing.

No broken windows.

No signs of forced entry.

No fingerprints.

No cameras catching anyone entering.

It was as if the person who left the photograph had never existed.

Which somehow made it worse.

Because it meant they knew the mansion.

They knew the security system.

They knew how to move without being seen.

Exactly like someone who belonged there.

"Someone inside the family."

Daniel's voice was quiet.

Emily looked at him.

"You think so?"

He nodded.

"Whoever did this knew about the secret room."

"And knew about my mother."

"That information was limited."

Emily looked toward the hallway.

"How many people knew?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Because they both knew.

Very few.

Margaret remained in the library.

She had not spoken since the photograph appeared.

Emily noticed.

"You're not surprised."

Margaret looked up.

"I am."

"No."

Emily stepped closer.

"You are afraid."

The old woman looked away.

And that was enough.

Emily understood.

Margaret knew something.

Again.

"Tell me."

Margaret sighed.

"There is something you need to see."

Daniel immediately became alert.

"Another secret?"

Margaret looked at him.

"Yes."

The answer was painful.

"Another one."

She led them to a different part of the mansion.

A section Emily had never entered.

The west wing.

It had always been closed.

Everyone said it needed repairs.

But now Emily understood.

In the Harrington family...

Closed doors never meant repairs.

They meant secrets.

At the end of the hallway was another locked room.

Margaret took out an old key.

Daniel stared.

"You said you didn't have keys."

Margaret looked at him sadly.

"I said some doors shouldn't be opened."

She unlocked it.

"Not that I couldn't open them."

Inside was a small archive room.

Unlike Sarah's secret room...

This one was organized.

Clean.

Maintained.

Someone had continued using it.

There were shelves full of files.

Old recordings.

Hard drives.

And in the center...

A large black box.

Emily walked toward it.

"What is this?"

Margaret answered:

"Richard's collection."

Daniel frowned.

"Collection of what?"

Margaret looked around.

"People."

The answer made Emily uncomfortable.

"What do you mean?"

Margaret opened the box.

Inside were hundreds of recordings.

Audio tapes.

Video files.

Photographs.

Reports.

Every person connected to the Harrington family had a file.

Employees.

Partners.

Friends.

Enemies.

Even family members.

"He recorded everyone?"

Daniel looked horrified.

Margaret nodded.

"Richard believed information was power."

Emily touched one of the files.

"Vanessa learned from him."

Margaret said nothing.

Because it was true.

Daniel searched through the files.

Then he stopped.

His expression changed.

"Emily."

She looked over.

"What?"

He held up a small tape.

The label was handwritten.

Only three words.

SARAH'S LAST NIGHT

Emily froze.

"No."

Her voice broke.

"No, no..."

She stepped closer.

"Play it."

Margaret immediately shook her head.

"Emily."

"Play it."

Daniel looked at Margaret.

But Emily's expression stopped him.

She was done waiting.

Done being protected.

Done living with pieces of a story.

The recording began.

Static.

Then a woman's voice.

Sarah.

Emily covered her mouth.

Even after twenty years...

She recognized it instantly.

"Richard, this is over."

A man's voice answered.

Richard Harrington.

"You don't understand what you're doing."

Sarah replied:

"No."

"I understand exactly."

The recording continued.

"You stole from people."

"You destroyed lives."

"You think money gives you the right to control everyone."

Richard laughed.

"You sound just like your daughter."

Emily froze.

Her daughter.

He knew about her.

Sarah's voice became angry.

"Stay away from Emily."

Richard answered calmly:

"You misunderstand."

"I don't want to hurt her."

"I want to protect the family."

Sarah laughed bitterly.

"That is what monsters say before they destroy something."

The room became silent.

Then came a sound.

A door opening.

Another voice entered.

A woman's voice.

Emily looked at Margaret.

Because she recognized it.

Not from memory.

From the mansion.

From years of hearing it.

Vanessa.

Everyone froze.

Vanessa's younger voice came through the recording.

"Grandfather."

Emily stepped back.

Vanessa had been there.

She had been involved.

Richard spoke:

"You shouldn't be here."

Vanessa answered:

"I wanted to understand."

"Understand what?"

"How you keep everyone loyal."

Silence.

Then Richard laughed.

"You are learning."

Emily felt sick.

Vanessa had not become like Richard by accident.

She had been taught.

The recording continued.

Sarah spoke:

"Vanessa, listen to me."

The younger Vanessa answered:

"I already know enough."

Sarah's voice softened.

"You don't know what he is."

Vanessa replied:

"I know exactly what he is."

A pause.

"And I know what I need to become."

The recording ended.

Everyone remained silent.

Daniel looked at Emily.

The truth was worse than they expected.

Vanessa wasn't just a liar.

She wasn't just someone who learned manipulation.

She was the continuation of a system built decades ago.

Then Daniel noticed something.

The tape had another file attached.

A digital recording.

Created recently.

"Someone added this later."

He clicked it.

A voice appeared.

Older.

Familiar.

Vanessa.

"I know you found this."

Her voice was calm.

Almost amused.

"If you are hearing this, then Emily Carter has discovered the past."

A pause.

"Good."

Emily frowned.

"She wanted us to find it?"

The recording continued.

"I need Emily to understand something."

"Her mother was not a hero."

"She was not a victim."

"She was the reason everything happened."

Emily's face changed.

"What?"

Vanessa continued.

"Sarah Carter made a choice twenty years ago."

"A choice that destroyed this family."

Daniel stopped the recording.

"No."

Emily looked at him.

"Why did you stop?"

"Because it's manipulation."

"How do you know?"

"Because Vanessa is giving you only part of the story."

Emily stared.

"Like everyone else."

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly."

But before they could continue...

A notification appeared on the computer.

A new file had been uploaded.

Nobody touched anything.

The file opened automatically.

A video.

The screen showed Sarah Carter.

Older.

Alive.

Sitting in a dark room.

Emily stopped breathing.

Her mother looked directly into the camera.

"Emily."

Tears filled her eyes.

"If you are seeing this..."

Sarah took a deep breath.

"...then I failed to protect you."

Emily stepped closer.

The video continued.

"But there is something you must know."

Sarah looked terrified.

"The person who has been helping you find the truth..."

A pause.

"...is the same person who helped destroy me."

Everyone looked around the room.

Daniel.

Margaret.

The hidden files.

The old recordings.

The years of secrets.

Sarah continued:

"Do not trust them."

"Not even if they tell you they love you."

The video ended.

Emily stood frozen.

Because now there was a new question.

A terrifying question.

Who was Sarah warning her about?

Margaret?

Daniel?

Someone else?

Then the computer screen changed.

A final message appeared.

Not from Sarah.

Not from Vanessa.

From an unknown sender.

YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THE WRONG MONSTER.

THE REAL ONE IS STANDING BESIDE YOU.

Emily slowly turned.

Everyone in the room became a suspect.

And for the first time since this nightmare began...

She wondered if the person helping her discover the truth...

Was the person hiding the biggest lie.
