CHAPTER 1: The Envelope Problem

Savannah’s smile didn’t move, but her eyes did.

“You really should have let me finish,” I repeated, calmer this time.

A beat of silence.

Then Becca slid her chair back.

“Wait,” she said slowly, picking up one of the white envelopes. “These are vendor confirmations, right?”

Savannah shot her a warning look. “Becca, don’t start.”

But Becca had already opened it.

Her expression changed in a way that made the whole table feel colder.

“This isn’t just confirmations,” Becca said. “These are revised invoices. And… March adjustments?”

The words hit the room like a dropped glass.

Savannah laughed once. “Oh my God, it’s boring accounting stuff. Can we not do this right now?”

But her voice was thinner.

I looked at her. “You told everyone I was ‘unstable.’ But you never explained why you suddenly took over Ethan’s vendor approvals in March.”

Savannah’s fingers tightened around her glass.

“You don’t understand business things,” she said sharply.

“That’s not an answer,” I replied.
