Chapter 2 – The Footage No One Could Deny

The mansion's grand foyer was silent except for the distant wail of an approaching ambulance.

Alexander dropped to his knees beside his mother.

"Mom, stay with me."

Evelyn winced but managed a weak smile.

"I'm all right..."

"No," Alexander whispered.

"You're hurt."

The head of security hurried forward, holding a tablet with trembling hands.

"Sir..."

"The staircase cameras recorded everything."

Victoria folded her arms.

"There's no reason to watch it."

"She lost her balance."

Alexander looked up slowly.

"Play it."

The recording began.

It showed Evelyn climbing the stairs slowly, holding the polished handrail.

The two women spoke for nearly a minute.

There was no argument.

No physical contact.

Then Evelyn turned to leave.

Victoria glanced toward the hallway camera.

She waited.

One step.

Two steps.

Then she thrust both hands into Evelyn's back.

The older woman fell helplessly down the marble staircase.

The recording ended.

No one spoke.

Victoria's face had gone completely white.

"I..."

"It wasn't supposed to happen like that."

Alexander stood.

His voice remained calm.

"You pushed my mother."

She reached for his arm.

"Alexander, listen to me—"

He stepped back.

"Don't."

For the first time since they had met...

There was nothing left in his eyes except disappointment.
